Aoufie recounts what Madam Eva said about how Aunty Grym was part of the Circle an organization that opposes Azalin's plans in multiple domains of dread. "I believe it's worth checking if they have a presence here in I'Cath"
Anthony’s mind was a sieve from the things he’d put it through and it had already been working overtime. Plus, to be fair, he’d been more than a little skeptical of Madam Eva and paying more attention to the parts that had been relevant to their immediate situation at the time, maybe not totally believing they’d find help. Afterall, Azalin had managed to extend his presence into the ‘real’ world to kill Aoelwyn. Counting on help might be a mistake. But Aoufie was right that it couldn’t hurt to try. Even if they didn’t have a foothold here, there was probably some resistance.
To Akyan, he nodded his thanks, but glanced over at Ireena and Ismark, towed along with them all day like luggage. She’d been a vampire victim recently and probably needed the sleep more…”Hey. How you two holding up? Maybe one of you should take this for tonight.. I kind of feel like at least one of us should scout the dream. See what we can learn.” He didn’t want to admit outright that there were a lot of people about to sleep in this room and it was already pushing some uncomfortable buttons for him.
“Ef it. It’s kind of my job anyway right? What do you guys want me to look for besides try to get a message to Ming’s family?” Maybe they would know something about an underground resistance. “These Daughters… they keep coming up in conversation. Any idea where I might … bump into them?” Glancing down at his spot cleaned, rough shaved self. No way he was blending in here. “The Palace?”
((OC: Anthony will take time to attune to the ring before he sleeps if Ireena or Ismark decline or Akyan isn’t cool with it. It’s his ring after all. But he is going to risk going in unless someone has a good reason for him not to.))
The Circle. Kora hated to admit it, but she had forgotten that as well. She was glad someone was paying attention. "Don't suppose there is some code word we're supposed to use to find them? That sure would be helpful." She scowls, any way they look at the situation it is confusing and overwhelming.
She is glad to hear that Anthony is finally going to get some sleep. "I got your back. But don't forget, you're supposed to get a job at the tower.. I'm curious what you'll be assigned. I'm sure you'll like polishing rocks." She smiles, trying to lighten the mood.
Aoufie shakes his head "I don't know of any code word. I just know they stay out of sight as they try to undermine Azalin's plan. Though I assume they need to eat as well, and we may find a clue by staking out the food spawning areas"
"Right. It sounded like you need to kind of suck up to get a sweet job, but I used up all my luck a long time ago." At least he didn't mind hard work. There were worse things to spend a dream doing if things went poorly for him.
Anthony gradually willed himself to wind down as he prepared to sleep.
Ming is drawn out of her thoughts when she hears her name, her eyes turning to Anthony as he talks about the dream. She gives a nod when he mentions that the elves don’t sleep… she’d forgotten about that since, well elves aren’t all that common here after all.
She goes a slight frown when Anthony mentions the Daughters. She had mentioned them before hadn’t she. Part of her regrets that, since her thoughts on them may or may not be valid. She’s not even sure of what exactly is important about them. Regardless she says, “Oh… well as far as I know they don’t go into the dream. They wander the city during the day, and gather at the Palace at dawn… I don’t know where they go after that. Maybe they follow their mother into the dream, or maybe they go back to wandering.”
She looks back down at her sister, listening as the mistwalkers talk about people and places she doesn’t know anything about. She does pipe in when Aoufie mentions staking out food spawning places. “Oh… that one stall is the only spot that does that. I don’t know why, but it’s true. Unless there are other places I just haven’t heard about…but I doubt that…”
Picking up on Kora’s effort to lighten the mood and glad to think about anything other than sleeping in a room full of people who wouldn’t wake up he commented, “Hopefully someone at the palace likes muscles and dimples and I can just sit around looking pretty,” and displayed that dimpled grin that had always been a coin flip as to whether it would get him into or out of trouble. He also twitched his eyebrows up at Ireena. She seemed like she could use a laugh.
“Wander?”odd choice of words. “Like the Jianshi?” He must have misunderstood what she’d said about people being assigned to entertain them if they were lucky.
Regardless, Anthony would do his best to get a job in a useful location, but it had sounded like they were random unless you had some kind of connections or reputation. Maybe if he connected with Ming’s family first, they could put in a good word for him. Aoufie would definitely be an easier sell as an exotic oddity and an entertainer, but then there wouldn’t be any hiding him once he was noticed. Anthony wouldn’t be shocked if he was the only Harengon any of the people here had ever seen.
As the group settles in for the night, Ireena gladly takes the ring from Anthony. Though she’s mostly recovered from her encounter with Strahd, she still looks a bit weary.
As dusk falls across the land, the doleful tones of the Nightingale Bell ring throughout the city, binding its citizens deeper into the enchanted sleep that plagued I’Cath.
For those that chose to fall asleep, they “awake” a few minutes after their eyes close to find themselves in the dreamscape city. Despite it being night in the real world, cheery sunlight streams in from the open balcony. Gone are the sleeping forms of Ming’s family, and the room you’re in has transformed into a masterfully built study. A heavy desk is set in front of a well-carved chair, and a fine rug lies across the floor. Bookshelves filled with colorful tomes fill the shelves to the brim. Outside, you hear the hustle and bustle of a productive city, and you even hear children laughing. Birds chirp in the trees near the balcony, and all seems to be just about perfect.
For those that stay awake, the night passes rather uneventfully, except for the patrol of jiangshi that starts working on one of the buildings nearby. The noises of their construction fill the air with a cacophonous melody that actually helps you stay awake. Thankfully, they don’t notice you’re awake, hardly paying attention to the room as they occasionally drift through the air next to the balcony.
(Honestly, I had forgotten that Ireena and Ismark are still with us when I wrote that lol. Akyan won't object to letting Ireena borrow the ring. Especially considering that we know Azalin is in this realm. We probably don't want Ireena entering the dream....)
Akyan nods when Aoufie explains what Circle he was talking about. With all that's happened so shortly after speaking with the Seer, he'd forgotten some of what was said. It's a good thing Aoufie has a good memory.
The drow doesn't object when Anthony suggests letting Ireena or Ismark use the ring, and nods when the older man hands it to Ireena. After a moments silence, he says, "If all of you are planning on entering the dream, to investigate I will as well. As is I don't see much of a point in my refraining from doing so. The more of us go in, the more investigating we can do. I doubt I'd be able to wake you from it if any of you were to get stuck anyways."
Akyan doesn't particularly like the idea of entering the dream, but when the rest of his siblings don't have a choice...well he'd rather be able to see exactly what's going on in the dream realm. Plus what he said still stands, the more eyes they have in the dream, the more information they can gather.
After listening to Ming talk about the daughters, he finds a spot against a wall and prepares to meditate. Once in his trance he somewhat hesitantly lowers the mental barrier which keeps the dream at bay. Now inside the dream, he checks to make sure the others are with him. Assuming they are he looks to Kora expectantly.
"I guess so... yeah," Ming replies to Anthony's question. Rubbing one arm she adds, "They... want approval from Tsien Chiang, but I don't think she likes them very much...."She averts her eyes, growing uncomfortable with the topic for no apparent reason.
When the bell tolls, she shrinks into a corner, holding her head as if a migraine set in and is made worse by the sound of the bell. She flinches visibly with each toll, and shivers a little as well. She'll never get used to that stupid thing, and she'll never understand why she has this reaction to it. Regardless, she stays frozen in the corner near her parents and sister for a good while before she comes back to the present.
As everyone else goes to sleep, she huddles up in the corner and watches everyone in silence, gripping her weapons whenever a Jiangshi flies by and flinching a little at some of the louder sounds. Sometimes she rocks back and forth, and every so often she hums softly...some melody that her mother used to sing to her and her sister. This stops quickly though, as she remembers to be quiet. She doesn't want to draw any attention, even though the Jiangshi likely won't hear her with all the noise going on outside.
As he settled, trying to will himself to sleep when his mind didn't want to, Anthony caught Ming's tension and reaction to the bell. The bell which pulled him though all of his layered resistances into sleep. As it did, he made an effort to reassure the woman, but his words came out as a slurred, half mumble.
Then opening his eyes and instant later, jolting 'awake' with his heart racing. It was eerie to have just gotten comfortable and closed his eyes to now feel like he should get ready for his day. Out of morbid curiosity, he took up one of the books and leafed through it before putting it back in its place.
"Guess we report to what's his face for our jobs. Stay as a group or try to look like we're not together?"It was more subtle to act like they weren't together, but they couldn't keep an eye on each other split up.
"Maybe we pair up? Akyan, how about we head to the tower first to get our jobs, and then we all meet outside this building to see what has happened? I don't know, but losing sight of each other doesn't sit well with me."
So if they agree, Kora starts heading to see what job awaits them.
"I'll do a little people watching on the way." Getting all his gear back in place even though it was a dream, Anthony let the other two go ahead a short way, sticking with Ismark and Aoufie if they wanted. As they walked to the plaza, he scanned faces and listened for the names of Ming's family.
Aoufie falls asleep and seeing all the comfort around him assuages some his stress even though he knows this dream is a trap. He will gather his things and head off with Anthony as he hopes of finding some clue.
"Yes, lets depart and see what we can find."
While walking he will look for anyone that may seem connected somehow to something clandestine or otherwise shady as he doubts the blissfully ignorant will be of any help.
As the group makes their way outside, they're greeted by the sight of few woman sitting on a bench under the gently swaying boughs of a tree. They seemed to be tending a few children as they played a game of marbles on the gleaming cobblestones, and you recognize their laughter as the ones you heard earlier when you first entered the dream.
Making your way to the center of the city (which fortunately wasn't far), you have to force your way through the bustling streets packed to the brim with people going about their tasks. The sun shines cheerfully overhead, its welcoming rays glinting off the polished shingles of the ornate mansions lining the streets. As you approach the commercial district near the Palace, the mansions give way to shops and merchant stalls, all of which are crowded with people either selling their wares or in the process of purchasing said wares. If you didn't know you were dreaming, you'd have no idea that this whole city was nothing more than a web of illusions and enchantments.
Up ahead standing in front of the closed gates that lead to the Palace of Bones, you spot a figure wearing fine blue robes atop a small stage holding a clipboard as he speaks to a small group of people before him. This must be where the assignments are handed out.
Since they’d not to go as all one big gaggle, Anthony hung back and scanned the square for Ming’s family, deciding to ask one of the shopkeepers picking out one run by an older woman. “Morning, I’m new in town and a buddy of mine told me I should talk to Jaihao and Shuyin, they’d kind of show me the ropes I guess.” Anthony offered the woman a sheepish, dimpled smile and scrubbed a hand through his hair. “I’m a little turned around I think.”
This whole thing was little strange to Anothy, as when he’d leafed through to book in the library wondering if there was anything inside or if it was entirely for show, he looked over the wares and watched the sales wonder what people were they got it if it was coin. Did they just .. think about what they wanted and make it so? Could he just think his scruff away without a shave?
At that thought, Anthony figured it couldn’t hurt and tried to imagine himself more or less the same, just .. cleaner, no zombie smut or blood on his tabard, the chain with nice polish on it.
((Not sure it's a thing or needs a roll, but cha/wis (they're the same) check for thinking himself clean. another +2 if a save instead. 22 ))
((Oops, forgot to mention that the book you read through was filled with poetry, though it was rather badly written. You assume that the other books also are filled, though you're not sure as to their quality.))
The older shopkeeper Anthony questions gives him an odd look. She looks him up and down with her wizened eyes, and then she hesitantly says, "Well, you were assigned quite the odd task, young man." It's clear that she thinks you're assigned to ask about Jaihao and Shuyin, and she shakes her head before continuing. "I've never heard of them, though I wish you the best of luck on your task."
The woman seems to be selling fine porcelain of several different types, though she seems to have a surplus of delicate plates. They look real enough, though the only way to truly tell was to handle one. Unfortunately, though Anthony tried his best to imagine himself differently, he still remains as scruffy as ever. Maybe one of the shops around here sold razors...
The man had gotten answers to all of his questions only to find himself with several more. Being low on funds, he could only fantasize about visiting a barber. Maybe they’d take one look at him and assign him to the task of bathing. After a small internal debate he decided to pick her brain a little more partly to give the others a chance to get jobs before he wandered that way.
“I was just on my way to get a job for the day. Happy to do my part to help out. Pretty good at picking things up and putting them down,” Giving a cheeky smile as he flexed a little for the gag since clothes and armor wholly covered any muscle definition. Not that he had a lot right now. He’d started his trip to the funeral a little soft. If things continued on their current trajectory though, he’d be lean and cut in no time. Combine that with a shave and haircut and he’d be set for a job looking pretty.”You seem like someone who knows what’s up.” tapping the side of his head. “Any advice for a newcomer on getting an interesting job. I guess I don’t mind that much, just like to have some nice scenery.” adding a wink, but leaving it to the woman to interpret ‘nice scenery’ however she wanted.
Talk about random job assignments, how did I guy like him end up as a priest?
