Violetnow seems pretty scared at the prospect of violent confrontation erupting."I didn't…, I mean maybe I can't turn you into a frog,..." she admits. "...yet. Broderick said that I would need company should I intend to venture into the witchwood."
Turning towards them "You two looked rather capable. So I thought, maybe you travel in the same direction and we might join."
Addressing Crassus"You never answered the question so I tried to make you scared."She suddenly seems to get angry "Why are you so stupid? I was just trying to protect you from getting hurt, too."She stops abruptly her anger gone realising what she just said. Trying to rectify the situationshe hastily adds "I mean I wanted neither of us to get hurt. I do possess magical powers. What you saw was me using an incantation to relight the candle. And that is not the limit of my powers"
"If you needed me to help take you into the Witchwood, you could've just asked, you didn't need to use some weird voice to get into my mind and tell me things that aren't true. I'll help you get through the woods and deal with any trouble. And I apologize if I was slow on the uptake. Magic voices and strange languages are not my strong point. But a word of advice; don't go around telling people that you're stronger than you actually are, somebody might ask you to prove yourself."
Crassus gets up briefly, moves to the table that he was at and moves his food and drink to Violet's table. "Now that we've moved past all of that, let's introduce ourselves if we're going to be working with each other. Name's Crassus."
"But it is a tried and tested tactic to fend off possible enemies. The harmless Purple-Spotted Frog looks just like the poisonous Widowsquib. The Haylen Bird can appear double in size by using it's plumage. The Battle of Longsaddle would have been lost but Captain Ballain convinced the forces under General Calan's lead that he still had a whole regiment of cavalry in reserve behind the hill." Violet visibly becomes more at ease when Crassusdoesn't show any hostility. "But you are right of course deception is not the way of the virtuous."
"What about you?" she turns towards Erlan. "You were also interested in going into the Witchwood. I can assure you that I also have no intention of robbing you. I am a wizard, we have no need for such pesky misdeeds."
I chuckle to myself when the Dragonborn calls himself slow. When the Dragonborn rejoins our table after collecting his food I look at him. “So you are as dumb as you are big, huh fire breather? Just an honorable Dragonborn doing good deeds in such a dangerous place? Helping the elderly and weak through the haunted woods for a “thank you?” No, there’s more to your bull shit then you let on. So cut to it or you may find yourself short a ranger. A very dangerous ranger...” I let my rant sink in for a moment before continuing.
”I go by Erlan. And I do need to pass through there. A few companions may be of great service. I have heard stories of this place and they have not been pleasant.” I turn to the wizard. “And you best keep that magic out of my head. I’m not one to play stupid games. Your magic skill are obviously less than dangerous. A frog? I hope you have more than that if you plan on surviving out there. Making threats like those against our lives or the lives of others would be foolish.”
“I have no problem with a partnership while we traverse this forest. Lots of dangerous things out there from what I’ve heard. Quick and painful deaths. But if either of you cut and run in the thick of it, I’ll stick an arrow into your back. Then I’ll make you thank me for it.”
“As far as I am concerned, I’m just a lone wanderer. Seeking my lost family. That’s all.”
"Actually, no. There's not more to this than I'm letting on. The woods need to be cleared and I figure that I should go and give it a shot since I'm able to do. But I do find it funny how you said that you don't want a fight, but the way you're talking right now leads me to believe otherwise."

Xenophon: Topaz Dragonborn Fighter (ixi's Dragon of Icespire Peak)
”The morning it is. Battle readied and eager I hope.” I pull the cloak further over my face and head off to my room I’ve been in since the night prior.
Once in my room, I barricade the door with a chair before removing my weapons and armor. I head off into a trance state for a few hours (4).
I’m up before the sun. I will ready all my belongings. Cleaning anything that needs cleaned and putting a razors edge on my blades. I dress, pack my items and head down stairs at the opening of breakfast. I will take a seat at table in the corner. I order a small bowl of a breakfast stew and slowly eat waiting for the others.
The dawn met rested travelers with chirping of birds and cold dew sprinkled on top of the grass. Thick mist only just started to settle when the company began their walk toward the Witchwood.
Erlan went in front of the company, attentive to all the little clues nature provided. Right now it provided only morning chill, broken by the beams of the rising sun and a heavy smell of fir wood, but ranger of all people knew how fast the weather can change.
Right behind him, seemingly unweighted by great heavy weapons, went Crassus, his golden scales shining and glittering in the sunlight. Warrior quietly whistled a simple marching tune and walked in its rhythm. Dragonborn disliked mist, knowing full well the dangers that hide in it, but the morning has been too peaceful to even consider it.
The last in the group went Violet, who decided leaning on the staff is a lot more comfortable than carrying it aloft. Her every step was accompanied by a quiet thud of the wood hitting the ground.
The company silently agreed that mornings were for walking and contemplation. Everyone was busy thinking, but Violet seemed to be listening. She walked behind so no one saw the concentrated look on her face, as if trying to listen in to the hushed whispers, origins of which were exceedingly difficult to point out. They were coming from the book, from inside her own head at the same time, but were too quiet to discern. Eventually she just gave up on it.
As the group moved forward, the conversation slowly built up. They talked about mundane things, everything and nothing. Weather, exploits, prices of food and weapons, the new law that severely limited trade with the city-states of the Chult and decreased the smuggler traffic from it as well.
They went a few leagues under the thick branches of the trees undisturbed, before finally deciding to stop for a short rest and a meal. Starting a bonfire for too troublesome, so the company made do with the rations they’ve bought. Before they had a chance to finish, however, they were interrupted by a loud crack of a fallen branch and a movement behind the tree line.
“Do not be alarmed”, said the quiet, but confident voice moments before his owner stepped into sight, “it is only I.”
It is finally time for Joinmybones to join the party. Let his speak first, then proceed as you were. For now, anyway *evil cackling*
OOC: I saw the spoiler after I posted my action. Shouldn’t spoil the action.
Swiftly I stand and draw my bow from my back in one smooth action. I nock an arrow and pull back the bow string with much tension. I begin to move to a point of cover beside a tree. I don’t say anything back to the voice. I’ll let the fire breather do the talking. I stand ready to attack. My aim true on the figure emerging from the wilderness.
An elderly human male stepped out from behind a tree just a little ways away from the trio's camp. He was a short man, and deep wrinkles graced the leathery tan skin around his eyes and hands, which gripped a quarterstaff. His hair was cut short and showed the telltale signs of graying, but there were still flecks of fiery red that peeked through and gathered along the sides of his head. His eyes were a bright, glimmering green, and seemed to be bursting with a youthful energy that contrasted with his elderly appearance. As he approached the group of Crassus, Violet, and Erlan, he used his quarterstaff as a walking stick, each of his steps punctuated by a soft thud. When he was 30 feet away, he stopped, and leaned on his quarterstaff a bit, surveying the group in more detail.
A Dragonborn, an Elf, and a Human. Aye, it's a promising group to be sure.He thought to himself. His eyes were drawn to the young woman briefly, and for that brief moment, another face from his past flashed in his mind. He crinkled his brow slightly, but in the next moment, the memory was gone.
The trio could see that Pictillian was dressed simply, wearing brown trousers, a white button down, and a black vest, buttoned to the top. His face bore a slight smile and when he finally spoke, it was with a deep brogue, and he first addressed the Elf, who had assumed a graceful hunting pose, bow drawn back and aimed at Pict.
"Well, lad, quick as a cat you are! And just as trusting too I'd wager!"He chuckled softly, giving the ranger a sly wink. "But there's no need for all of that now. I mean you no harm."
He changed his focus then to the entire group. "My name is Pictillian, but you can call me Pict if that's a mouthful! I've got a little offer, if you're interested. I'm new to these woods as well, but I've been drawn here by the rumors what been floating around. I've got a particular attunement to nature, y'see, and if you'll have me, I'd be glad to help you navigate these woods in exchange for some mutual protection."
He paused for a moment to let the offer sink in, before continuing.
"O'course, I'm not completely defenseless meself so I won't be a burden on ye, but, I get the feeling these woods might be more dangerous than they seem."
Hello everyone! Nice to meet all of you. Looking forward to playing
Crassus sees the old man who has just popped out in the middle of the woods and sizes him up. "I hope that you're attuned to nature like you say you are, because you don't look like the sort of person that would be good in a fight. If you're capable of helping us get through these godforsaken woods, I don't see why we should turn down the guide. I have no intention of getting lost in here for any amount of time." In reality, Crassus isn't super thrilled about Pict joining, but he's already working with more people than he has in a long time, so what's one more?
Welcome to the group.

A moment later, a strong breeze flows through the makeshift camp, rustling the leaves on all of trees around them. Pict makes another small gesture and the wind abates abruptly. "I'm sure you won't regret having me along!"
