Cal steps forward as Galdric finishes his impassioned plea. "Listen to him!" Cal's voice cuts through the murmurs of the crowd. "He speaks true! Riggs and those he works for WIN if we let ourselves be dragged into war with Sembia. That's all they want. That's all they need. Are you going to let the people who attacked us win?" He spits out the last word with disgust.
He looks around the crowd, locking eyes with as many as he can. "I say no! We will not let ourselves be conned by these deceivers! The only way to win a rigged game is not to play!!"
Cal steps back, his gaze unwavering, hoping that his words have helped to sway the crowd towards the reason and unity Galdric has suggested.
As Galdric and Cal's words echoed through the camp, a tangible shift occurred within the crowd of soldiers. Their earlier fervor for vengeance seemed to pause, as if frozen by the gravity of the plea laid before them. Doubt and contemplation replaced the anger in their eyes, their shouts for retribution dwindling into murmurs of uncertainty. It was clear the party’s impassioned appeal had struck a chord, planting seeds of hesitation in the minds of those ready to march blindly into war.
Just as this moment of reflection seemed to take hold, a commanding presence cut through the atmosphere. Lord Elric Thornvale, leader of the Dagger Falls contingent, emerged from his tent with an air of authority that immediately drew the attention of all present. His expression was one of clear annoyance, exacerbated by the disruption to the disciplined environment he upheld.
"Enough of this!" Lord Thornvale's voice boomed across the camp, a commanding echo that silenced the remaining whispers. "Get back to your preparations, all of you!" His order was met with a hurried compliance, the soldiers scattering to resume their duties, though the lingering traces of doubt were still visible in their movements.
With the camp quickly returning to its previous state of activity, Lord Thornvale turned his steely gaze to the party. He beckoned them with a curt gesture, signaling them to follow him into the tent. Once inside, away from the ears of the camp, his annoyance bubbled to the surface.
"What is the meaning of this spectacle?" he demanded, his voice sharp as a blade. "You waltz into my camp, stirring up dissent and confusion among my men with tales of deception and plots. I will have answers now. Who are you, and why have you brought this... this prisoner," he gestured dismissively towards Riggs, "into my midst? Speak quickly, for my patience wears thin."
Galdric’s very shallow well of diplomacy has officially ran dry after addressing the crowd outside. So with little patience remaining, he addresses Lord Thornvale:
”I’m not sure how I can make it any clearer. Lord Varden dispatched us to hunt down the attackers of Shadowdale. By any measure we were successful. Half were destroyed in battle, the other half scattered, and their leader was captured and interrogated. We were enroute to Daggerfall in hopes we could use the Arcane Brotherhood to spread the word of his plans quickly. That is when we came across this encampment and saw the opportunity to present our findings here and now. Our hope is to prevent needless bloodshed.”
Lord Thornvale, absorbing the severity of Galdric's words, displayed a mix of concern and understanding.
"You and your companions have undertaken a noble task," Lord Thornvale acknowledged, his voice laced with a note of empathy that belied his initial skepticism. "But the challenge we face goes beyond identifying the true enemy. Our people, they're hurt and angry. They've suffered at the hands of aggressors, and their desire for retribution is a force in its own right. An outlet for their vengeance is necessary, or we risk directing that force inward, potentially sparking unrest within our own ranks."
He continued, emphasizing the delicate balance his position required him to maintain. "Riggs’s testimony, while significant, won't suffice to quell the thirst for vengeance that permeates our camp. The people need more than words; they require concrete evidence, a clear target for their anger. Without it, even my support of your claims could be seen as an act of betrayal, further fueling the fires of discontent."
Pausing, Lord Thornvale conveyed the seriousness of their situation. "I will grant you two weeks — no more. Within that time, you must unearth irrefutable proof of this plot to manipulate Dagger Falls and Shadowdale into war. Evidence so compelling that it can redirect the cries for vengeance towards those truly responsible for our suffering."
His expression softened slightly, recognizing the enormity of the task he set before them. "This is no small request, and I do not envy your position. But should you succeed, know that you will have done more than prevent a war; you will have preserved the unity and integrity of our people. I will do what I can to aid you and you may make use of my camp and my resources for the night."
“We do not wish to deprive these people of their revenge. No one can deny the losses they have suffered. But if that rage is directed in the wrong place and the truth is later revealed, the grief they feel will only get worse. But we are not blind to the position you are in, and we are grateful for the chance you have given us. We will use this time as best we can to find the evidence you seek. One more thing. Would it be possible for your forces to take custody of the prisoner? A word of caution though, my Lord. If this conspiracy is real, it is not inconceivable that agents could be within your ranks, trying to stoke the flames of war. Such agents would want to silence the man. Be mindful of those around you, and those left with the prisoner.”
"He twists his words to suit the situation. A pain in the ass if you don't have keen eyes on the fella.." Horros chimes in as he brings forward the prisoner. "I suggest you have him bound at all times separated from the common troops."
Taya knows camp dynamics and how fickle morale is. In a war camp you don’t want to drag along the one person that’s responsible for half your armies hatred. Not alive that is. She is very sure that if the Lord keeps Riggs alive until they are gone it will be a lot to ask for. For their own reputation, if they want to side - at least for now - with the defenders of Shadowdale and Dagger Falls, it would be best they partake, if not execute it themselves, in Rigg’s war crime tribunal and, most likely, execution. “I think Riggs needs to be tried for his crimes,” Taya says when Horros steps forward with Riggs in tow. “Perhaps we can help conduct the trial as we witnessed and ended the assault on Shadowdale.”

“Ordinarily, I would agree. But we only have two weeks to find evidence of a larger plot. I don’t think Riggs will be much help in that regard. As much as I would truly enjoy helping these people dispense justice on the mercenary, I’m not sure it’s the best use of our very limited time.”
"I would have thought this will be taken care of rather swiftly given the evidence and magnitude of his offence," argues Taya, "War trials don't invite judges and a jury and they are rather simple. Either you can bargain with the enemy commander's life or he is worthless to keep alive, if not he is an added risk and a liability for troop morale and integrity." Taya looks at the Lord to see how he reacts to her assessment.
"But, I agree, if it will take longer. We should not stay, we must hurry if we wish to uncover what is behind this charade."
"After, perhaps, a more thorough interrogation? Someone in this camp may just be able to work mystical solutions to problems, I would hope." Cal says, and then turning to Lord Thornvale directly "Sir, anyone able to pry the truth from his mind or able to compell him to speak? We've tried our techniques and it proved fruitful, but perhaps more remains to be gleaned from him."
“I doubt Riggs knows much more than he told us. He’s only a mercenary paid to perform a task. If his employer is smart enough to create a conspiracy of this scope, they are smart enough not to divulge pertinent details to the hired help. But we’ve all traveled together long enough now that I trust your judgment and will yield to the groups decision.”

As Galdric concluded his appeal, Lord Elric Thornvale pondered their words with a gravitas befitting the leader of Dagger Falls. "The wisdom in your caution is not lost on me," he acknowledged, indicating his understanding of their predicament. "Riggs will be closely watched under our care," he assured them, the stern look in his eyes betraying his concern over the mention of potential traitors within his ranks. "The possibility of having enemies in our midst is unsettling, but rest assured, we shall guard against any attempts on Riggs's life. The truth he holds is too vital to be silenced prematurely."
Upon hearing Horros’s suggestion for ensuring Riggs's security, Lord Thornvale nodded in agreement. "Your suggestion is prudent. Riggs will be isolated and under constant surveillance, away from the general populace of the camp."
Taya's proposition of conducting a trial elicited a thoughtful pause from Lord Thornvale. "A trial," he echoed, the notion clearly resonating with him. "Under the laws of the Dalelands, the only expedient form of trial we could conduct in the time we have would be a trial by combat. It's a tradition that allows for swift justice, and in this case, could indeed satisfy the camp's clamor for retribution." He weighed her words carefully, acknowledging the delicate balance between swift justice and the pursuit of truth.
To Cal's inquiry about mystical interrogation, Lord Thornvale’s response was measured yet candid. "There are methods, admittedly harsh and time-consuming, through which we might extract further truths from Riggs. However, these techniques are not only gruesome but require a delicacy of time we can ill afford in our current standing." His acknowledgment implied the grim nature of such interrogations, hinting at the moral complexities they entailed.
Outside, Haj slipped quietly through the camp, his keen senses tuned to the murmurs and rustlings of the soldiers. Hidden in the shadows, just beyond the flickering light of a campfire, he overheard a clandestine meeting between two figures whose attire did not quite match the regular soldiers of Dagger Falls.
"These fools, rallying for war, have no idea," whispered one figure, a sense of smug superiority in his oddly stilted voice. The other nodded in agreement, a cold glint in his eyes as he responded, "Our benefactors will be pleased. The chaos of war is the perfect cover for our... acquisitions." As if they sensed Haj's presence one of the figures muttered "We'd best not speak so openly, please, join me in my quarters." before stepping into a light canvas tent.

Horros lets out a sigh of relief before turning to his companions, “one step in the right direction… I’ll take it, that’s for sure. The question is, who do we turn to next? Seems like the smallest setback can lose us precious time and that’s the one thing we don’t have. Preventing a war is a lofty goal for such a small group, but I think we’ve got right tact.” He looks at the others with a nod of approval as he places his shield over his shoulder.
“I’m not sure exactly. The best course I can think of is continuing on to Snowmantle and try to find this Zenezara and see what she can tell us. I’m not especially confident about this idea but I don’t know what else to do. No idea is off the table at this moment.”
Taya chimes in, "Right, I agree, we should still try to meet with Riggs' master. It is possible that they already know about his failure and won't show up but it's the most solid lead we have. Also on the way, in Dagger Falls, we can try and report to the Arcane Brotherhood depending on whether they ever made it there."
As Haj crept closer to the source of the murmured conversation, the veil of night seemed to amplify every secretive word exchanged between the shadowy figures. Hidden in the darkness, he caught elusive fragments of their dialogue, each snippet a puzzle piece in the greater mystery they faced.
"...the desert calls, and our benefactors thirst for the chaos to unfold. War between Dagger Falls and Sembia would provide the perfect cover..." one figure whispered, his voice a serpent's hiss in the cool night air.
"The relics, ancient and imbued with power, are key. Our benefactors' plans for them in the heart of Anauroch demand our success," the other replied, a note of fear in his tone hinted at the mysterious nature of their backers.
After a few more moments of soft, indeterminate conversation Haj heard a soft whoosh then silence.
„I think,“ begins Taya to reply to the Lord, „the mercenary leader is best left in your care. He might still hold secrets that can help you and your allies from Shadowdale to get the upper hand in the conflict that he instigated. We can’t do much more with him and he’d slow us down. Do with him as you will, be it swift or in the spirit to get answers.“
Taya feels that there business with the Lord of Dagger Falls has concluded and she turns to leave, „With your permission, my lord?“
