Sylyra rolls his eyes at the offering of 50 gold, but doesn't say anything. He's quite amused at how the woman is acting toward Auriel. But again, he keeps his comments to himself. But as more and more comes to light about offerings and punishments, he starts to scowl. It sounds to him like the fey of the forest are nothing but bullies.
Hex chuckles at Carl's comment. "Don't mind them, Carl. Sometimes it's better not to get special treatment. Tends to come with a lot of assumptions and expectations."
Before any further questions can be answered, the nervous buzz of the Leaky Bucket's common room is shattered by a scream of terror. A heartbeat later, a young human woman bursts in through the front door.
"They know! They know what we did!" she cries, throwing herself at Grinna's feet. She claws madly at the halfling woman's clothes with one hand and points out the door with the other.
No sooner than she collapses, everyone in the inn begins shoving and pushing to get outside first.
Upon hearing the commotion, Auriel stands up in a split second. His first instinct is to take a quick look at the young woman as she collapses in Grinna's arms, checking if she's wounded and needs immediate help. If that isn't the case, he shares a quick concerned look with his companions before rushing to the door. This time he won't be as mindful of the mob as when he first met it and will push whoever is in his way to make it out of the tavern as quickly as possible.
- Make way! - he shouts as pushes to find his way to the exterior.
Hex immediately perks up as the woman bursts through the door, her hand instinctively grabbing her bow. She's confused for a moment, by the chaos of everyone scrambling to get outside, before deciding to follow Auriel and helping him through the crowd.
Sylyra looks around as chaos ensues. He notes Auriel's insistence in pushing through the throng. When Hex and then Carl give chase, the elf gets to his feet, brushes the front of his tunic, and then casually follows the mass out of the tavern.
As some of you wrestle your way through the throng, various villagers cry out in alarm and issue prayers to the gods for protection; some silent, others not so much.
The two dozen villagers from inside the inn gather around the town's central signpost. Hanging from it is an adult human male, blood streaming from his eyes and mouth.
Having fought his way out along with Hex and Carl, Auriel rushed out only to stop dead at the gruesome sight of the hanging man. Who was that? One of the villagers that went to Serelis? What had happened to him? Were those wounds the result of a weapon fight, or something else entirely?
The eladrin then blinks, realizing this is not the time to be thinking about any of that. Could they still save this man's life...? He quickly approaches the signpost, puts the halberd aside and stands right under the hanging man, arms extended to be able to hold the body when it falls down. He glances at his friends, letting them know he is ready:
- Quickly, maybe it's not too late.
Auriel waits for the body to fall, his hands ready to bestow Tyr's light upon the man ... if he's still alive.
Hex grimaces at the sight of the man hanging from the signpost. She didn't know too much about the fey but she now had a better understanding of why the villagers were acting the way they were.
She nods at Auriel as he asks for their help and (assuming he is with us) pulls Uragum along with her to the post. "Help me up." Without waiting for a response, she begins climbing the goliath to reach the man and get him down as carefully as she can, knowing Auriel would be below to catch him.
Carl gathers by the signpost, waiting as the man is brought down. He recalls some basic medicine and ABCs of assessment of vital signs, resuscitation that he once read about in a book in the library. He checks the man to see if there is any hope, if he could be healed or if his spirit has left..
OOC: Not quite night, but later in the afternoon for sure.
As you near the man, you see the extent of his injuries in gruesome detail. His eyes have been put out and replaced with polished, black stones carved to resemble large, lidless eyes. A foot-long bone pin has been driven through a sheet of paper into the man's chest, effectively pinning it to him. Yet despite his injuries, the man still clings to life. However, that will not last long. Taking in his wounds, Carl can see that he is on death's door. Removing the pin incorrectly will likely kill the man; yet if the man is left in his current state, he will simply die more slowly.
"By the gods, that's Rerk!" gasps come from the villagers as they look upon the scene.
Auriel is clearly shocked by the extent of Rerk's wounds, but doesn't say anything about it and doesn't even look at the piece of paper pinned to the man's chest just yet. Instead, he places him on the ground carefully and holds one of Rerk's hands, trying to comfort him. Then, he whispers softly: "We got you. Hang on, Rerk, we got you".
As he says this, the eladrin looks at Carl, awaiting his instructions. His hand, attached to Rerk's, emanates a golden glow ... he's ready to cast his healing magic as soon as the dwarf gives the word.
(OOC: Auriel will give Rerk 10 Lay on Hands points soon as he's told to. He won't release the healing magic all at once, but does this point by point, continuously, as the pin is extracted).
Carl looks at Auriel and says, “Let’s help him, let’s get him down! Carefullly, gently… we need to heal him….” Carl helps in any manner that he can, anxious and agitated. He looks over at Sylyra, opens his mouth, then closes it silently. He starts fretting and wringing his hands, checking him here and there, but it is clear that his knowledge only came from books, and not from the experience of care for patients.
- Carl, you can do this - Auriel tells the dwarf - Look at me - he says, and when he's got the dwarf's attention he adds - Come on. We are on this together. I know you can do this.
As he says this, Auriel places his other hand on Carl's shoulder. A flash of radiant light appears as the paladin tries to give the dwarf a spark of confidence. (OOC: If allowed. It may be more flavour than anything since I'm not sure this works RAW?)
As Auriel and Carl lower the poor soul, and Carl tries to build up enough courage to start giving directions, Sylyra picks his way through the crowd of onlookers. Amid their whispered and agitated conversations, the elf speaks an incantation. A shower of light motes rain down from the mistletoe tied to the end of his staff, causing a few more gasps from the spooked townsfolk. Once he reaches the focus of everyone's attention, Sylyra scrutinizes the situation and then begins giving directions on how to best extricate the bone needle.
Before the party can remove the pin and heal the man, Hex steps in. "Wait, we should probably remove those stones from his eyes. I don't think he'd appreciate having to scoop them out when he's conscious." She look to the other members of the party, not confident in her own ability to remove the stones without hurting Rerk further.
- You're right - Auriel replies to Hex. Then he turns to Carl and Sylyra - Do you think that could be done while the pin is being extracted? If Hex focuses on the eyes and you both work on the pin ... it may work? I'll use all my healing if necessary - he adds, trying to reassure his friends before they proceed however they feel is best.
