As you approach the guard he hails you and orders you to stop.
"Aye, so this is it eh? Just four of you interested in what the lord has to offer? Well, better than nothing. I will escort you to the lord."
He beckons you to follow and as a group you work your way to the house. He enters without knocking and leads you into a side room.
"Wait here. Lord Orldebrandt will be with you shortly."
With that, the guard steps out of the room. You can hear him take a post up just outside the door.
You look around the room and find yourself in some sort of sitting room. A couple shelves stand against the walls with different books and other odd assortments. A few minutes pass and Lord Orldebrandt steps in. He is tall, gray haired and proud looking.
"Welcome, welcome!" He says with cheer. "It is good to see that there are those that are willing to help. I am Rutherley Orldebrandt. I have a proposition for you. I am in need of adventurers who can aid me in dealing with this kobold problem that has plagued this town for too long now. And now we are at odds with the local lizardfolk as well again. Historically the lizardfolk Stinging Mist tribe were placated with offerings of food and the occasional weapon of worked metal, but recent kobold activity in the area has the lizardfolk tolerances for those they see as encroaching on their territory at an all-time low." I am fully prepared to finance you adventurers to solve this town’s problems. I am offering each of you 120 gp to investigate the source of the kobold raids and bring a halt to their mischief. Now, I would prefer this to be conducted peacefully if possible, but solve this matter you must."
Orldebrandt looks you over.
"Well, what say you, will you aid in this? And if so tell me who you are and what skills you bring."
The young fighter draws himself up to stand taller when the Lord enters the room. After hearing his offer, the lad is the first to step forward and speak. "My Lord, I am Kirinar, a faithful member of your community, and I am wholly committed to this cause! I am part of your militia, but hope to be part of your Guard force. I am trained in the use of weapons and armor to bring about peace through strength. Since Mire's Edge is my home, I will get to the root cause of this kobold problem, and help with the lizardmen if I can."
"Ah, Kirinar. I thought I recognized you. My memory is refreshed. You have served faithfully when called upon. I wish I could send the guard to handle this issue, but I need them here at the town. Between the kobolds and the lizardfolk I cannot spare anyone. Thank you for offering your aid."
Orldebrandt smiles as he speaks and he appears genuinely pleased that you are here.
Realizing it’s probably her turn Faen says, “Oh uh, m-my name is Faen and I guess I know a few spells and quite a few languages i-including Draconic, uh, sir.” She says all of this quickly, clearly nervous to be in the presence of this important figure.
"Welcome Faen. We are honored that a high elf is interested in aiding our humble town. Your knowledge of the draconic language and other skills should aid in this matter greatly."
“I am Ransyl Fireforge. I spent the first half of my life as a soldier in the Northern Dwarf armies, but now I spend my life exploring and helping those in need. I’ve very much enjoyed your town’s hospitality and ale. I’ve heard stories from the townspeople about this threat and am ready to help.”
"Hmm, oh my name is Allendale Green, and I suppose there is no way to sugar coat this but I am a master thief. If I wanted all the valuables in this room could be mine and you'd never know." Allendale said pushing himself of the wall to straighten out and show that nothing was hidden under his cloak. "I can assure that I will come in helpful." He said bowing. As he bowed he revealed a pouch of gold he took from the lords pocket as he walked in.
Kirinar looks with admiration and a bit of awe at the elf and dwarf, and an unmistakable look of shock at Allendale's exclamations. He hoped the guards didn't pound the young rogue for daring to steal from the Lord...but Kirinar wasn't a fool, either. "Allendale, you ought to keep your sticky fingers in your pockets in the town. Why don't you return the Lord's valuables now that you have demonstrated your skill for the adventuring group..."
"Ah Allendale, welcome." The Lord turns his attention to you. A thief eh? Perhaps you are turning your life around? Well, your skills will certainly come in handy,"
OOC: Allendale, in fact you have stolen nothing from the Lord. If you wish to attempt such an action you must declare it ahead of time in your role playing. Then you can make the appropriate dice roll to see if you succeed.
For everyonee : All such actions must be declared by role play or make a note OOC as I just did above of what you would like to attempt and I will let you know if you can or have you roll to try.
We'll carry on as if that bit had not happened and we'll carry on with the story.
Orldebrandt looks around at the group assembled. "I believe you have skills to get this job done. I wish I could tell you where to find the kobold's hideout is but we've never been able to find it. Somewhere in the swamp. You'll have to search. As promised here is your payment, in advance."
Orldebrandt moves to a cabinet, produces a key and unlocks it. He lifts out a chest and removes 4 bags of gold. He hands each of you a bag.
"One for each of you. You can use this to buy whatever supplies you need in town. I don't know how long it will take to find their lair so I suggest bringing enough supplies along. Head back to town, gather supplies and head out when you are ready. "
He looks at each of you.
"Unless any of you have any questions my guard will see you out."
"Oh, and Allendale, please no sticky fingers when you leave?"
“Uh, thank you,” Faen says receiving her bag with wide eyes. She had never seen so much money in her life! She makes sure that she keeps an eye on this newly proclaimed thief.
"My Lord, has there been any consistency in where the kobolds attack, or escape to? Have the Guards been able to see where the creatures exit or enter the swamp? If we can narrow down where to start searching the swamp that would give us an advantage. Otherwise, we will have to either start at the edge and search everything until we luck upon some tracks, or wait for the next attack and follow the group back to their hiding place."
Once they leave, Kirinar says to the group, "Well, looks like we're a team now! I can help you find shops and merchants here in town to get supplies. I know I want to visit the weaponsmith to pick up a backup, and my favorite herbalist to get a healing potion. Plus the tavern to fill this wineskin!"
(OOC) If available, Kirinar will purchase a potion of healing, 5 days of rations, and a flail for 62.5 gp.
Thank you for the tip on the herbalist. I like the idea of having that potion. I'll go with you and buy everyone a mug of ale at the tavern. Let's meet there to discuss our plan.
OOC - the pricing I saw for potion of healing and 5 days rations on the basic rules is a little different. 50gp for the potion and 25gp for 5 days rations. 75gp total without the flail.
Allendale seperates from the rest of the group and begins taking his own path to the tavern he see's a tents selling different goods and thinks of the ways he could nab them. He shakes his head not wanting to risk his job and continues walking.
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to join you guys on the way to the herbalist. Also do you know where I might find a place that sells good healer’s kits in town?”
OOC: I’d like to buy a healer’s kit, a herbalism kit, 10 days of rations, 2 glass bottles, and 3 vials for 32 gp
Kirinar thinks about Faen's request for a moment or two, then says, "A healer's kit...hmmm. Well, if old Matilda the herbalist doesn't have what you need, maybe Doc Elmont will. Or at least tell us which shop could help fill your order." Kirinar waves or says 'Hi' to a lot of the folks in Mire's Edge, and even seems to have a small group of youngsters who know him as well. He has a kind word for everyone, even the kids, who he treats as well as any of the older residents.

Orldebrandt turns to Allendale.
