My name is Ax, and I would like to make something interesting. I'm looking for 3-4 players who have the following characteristics:
1) Genuine skill in collaborative storytelling 2) Willingness to move a little outside of the typical mechanics of D&D 3) An ability to contribute to the game at regularly scheduled intervals (nothing too crazy, of course) 4) More interested in creating something worthwhile than in following rules 5) Above all else, must be kind, courteous, and respectful of one another
What are we doing here?
Depending upon the generation from which you hail, this could be the point at which you hit the "back" arrow on your device. In short, I'd like to put a fantasy spin on the early 90's television series "Quantum Leap". If you aren't familiar, please allow me to open the door to a world before smartphones and prestige television: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Leap
The plot will focus on a group of individuals who, by some arcane transplanar accident, are thrust into a series of alternate realities. Arc by arc, your character might find him- or herself in a gritty noir classic, fighting the Normans at the Battle of Hastings, or competing in the Belmont as either the jockey or the horse!
A few caveats My goal here is not to throw the world of Dungeons and Dragons out the window. This will remain a decidedly 5e-style adventure, complete with all manner of dice rolls, classic D&D races, classes, and puzzles/quests/fights. That said, I will also throw occasional curves your way. We will undoubtedly utilize a variety of game mechanics depending upon the setting and objectives of the current arc. The onus will be upon the player to remain true to his or her character and find a way to weave a narrative that is sensible, regardless of whether the next leap will be the leap home.
Who the hell are you?
What I would require from you, the applicant, is fairly simple. I would like to see 1-2 basic character designs that could reasonably fit one of the following archetypes:
1) An arcane scientist (Somewhere on a spectrum between Dumbledore and Snape) 2) An assistant (from shiftless to incredibly capable) 3) A hapless bystander (think: pizza delivery guy- would love someone who can be funny without being a pain!) 4) An officer of the law (the muscle, but maybe with a heart of gold?) 5) The executive (maybe the director of the Academy, or just the professor's direct supervisor. Results-driven and cost-oriented)
You will need to roll a character using the standard array, choosing from any class and any race. My only request is that you stick with official content; we're going to some crazy places and you're going to want at least one foot planted firmly in reality for this adventure. We will begin at level one and leveling up will occur at the end of each chapter. I am looking for the following information about your character:
Name: Age: Race: Class: Archetype: (arcane scientist, bystander, assistant, officer, or executive) Desired Background: Alignment: (You've got to be either neutral or good here, I'm afraid) Backstory: (I can't stress this enough: please be brief. I only want 2-4 sentences to get a sense of your writing style) Description of how they look: (Not terribly important, but it might help me to picture what you have in your mind's eye)
Overall Tone
Things are going to get just a little zany. The mood will vary arc by arc, starting with something more or less akin to the epic heroism you'd expect in D&D. We'll wend our way through some lighthearted spoofs, hardboiled mystery, sci fi horror and anything in-between. I'm not expecting you to be a professional writer, but if you're willing to try new things I think you'll have more fun here than you're used to having.
That just about wraps it up. Please direct any and all questions to this thread. I'm looking forward to reviewing your submissions! Depending upon the interest this generates I will close this thread and send out invitations to the most promising three submissions on or around (UPDATE: August 25th). The campaign will then begin in earnest in mid-September.
Thank you! -Ax
EDIT: I've updated the archetypes to provide a little more direction, and I've added a new role. This will likely be four players instead of three in light of the interest and the number of direct messages I've received. Please feel free to revise your character concepts as new ideas arise! I will review every submission one final time on September 1st. Good luck!
Thanks for the submission, Craig. I wasn’t clear on this last point: be sure to include which of the four archetypes listed above your character would fall under. Would your drow be an arcane scientist, then?
Also, I wouldn’t have a problem with you playing an aasimar
Backstory: Aldric always had a natural talent. Whether it was in the field of history, magic, or linguistics, Aldric excelled at what he put his mind towards. So when he was invited to attend the college for mages at the age of 17, he accepted and graduated at the head of his class. Since graduating, he has taken up a position at the college researching the mysteries of the multiverse.
Appearance: Brown hair, fair skin, thin and not very muscular, dressed in a very fine violet coat, with a brown waistcoat, white shirt, and trousers.
Name: Alston Timbers Age: 114 Race: Rock Gnome Class: Rogue(going for inquisitive) Archetype: Officer Background: Investigator Alignment: Lawful Neutral Backstory:
Alston Timbers is the name. I'm a Private Eye. Have been ever since the murder of my girl, Carlin. Happened nearly sixty years ago. She was makin' the big money as some sort of arcane scientist. I didn't pry into it, magic had never been my forte. Anyway, she was walkin' home one day when some guy pulled her into an alley, held up a knife to her throat, demandin' money. Carly thought she could magic her way out of it, but ended up bleedin' out in a dark alley with her throat slit. I heard about this, and I didn't waste my time cryin' or nothin'. No, that'd just waste time. I decided to find whoever had killed her and administrate my own justice. I'd always been good at findin' things out, so I set out to find the guy. Long story short, I found the guy, one Jack Shay. He got the chopping block, and I got my new job. Been a Private Eye ever since.
One day, I got hired to investigate some disturbances going on down where Carly used to work. Locals had been complainin' 'bout flashes of light, sounds, and other magical whatnot. I headed down there to investigate. When I got there and came in, I heard some noises from in the basement, saw flashin' blue light. I headed down, and came upon some sort of magical experiment gone wrong. I tried to head back up, but there was a bright flash of light, then nothin'.
Description: Alston wears a long(for a gnome), beige trenchcoat and a(also beige) fedora. He has medium length black hair and a slight black beard. He constantly smokes cigars, and always keeps a carton with him. He is wary of everyone, and is always willing to take up a case.
As a child I always wanted to be a soldier and when I came of age I tried out but didn't make the cut. So I went to the next best thing trying to help people by being a police officer and saving lives that way.
Traits, I love people and will do anything to help the innocent and protect those that can't protect themselves.
Bonds, the law must always be upheld and I will always follow the law.
Flaws, I have the tendency to talk a lot.
I am thinking of going the protecter route and since I am the first one to do this kind of person so far I thought I would have a good chance hopefully.
Backstory - I always loved music as a child. And that never changed. My mother passed down her favorite lute to me, just as she died after laying on her deathbed for nearly a month. I never knew my father but that never mattered, until know. When she died I had nothing to my name but this lute. So I left my mother's house and played mothers favorite song. For hours, and hours ,and days. Until I looked up half dead and saw the innkeeper, who gave me a job on the spot
Description - Joe wears a dusty riped red cape, a poorly sewed green shirt and always carries a lute in his hand. He has black hair some stubble on his chin and is very thin.
Name: Cordelia Moon Age: 25-35 (Haven't pinpointed yet. Depends on the age makeup of the party.) Race: Human (Variant Feat: Alert) Class: Rogue Archetype: Assistant (Very capable assistant.) Desired Background: Sage (Or cloistered scholar if I can make them slightly less cloistered.) Alignment: Neutral Good (Tends to be lawful until the law doesn't work for her.) Backstory: Cordelia doesn't have a dark, mysterious past or even a tragic history. She was born to a bookish father and an adventurous mother. Cordelia allows herself to fade into the background when the arcane scientist is around, but she is always ready to deal with whatever fallout their words might bring. She sometimes considers herself more of a caretaker than an assistant. Description of how they look: Cordelia is quite short for her race as she stands the shortest among them. She keeps her black hair short and tends to cover up her torso down to her mid-thigh in a large, gray shawl, under which she hides her various weapons and tools. What might stand out about her the most are the pair of sun and moon earrings she wears.

Name: Professor Gordra Mulzumia Age: 53 Race: Dragonborn (Red) Class: Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline) Archetype: arcane scientist Desired Background: Worked in investigating planar sciences Alignment: Neutral Backstory: Was pushed into academic studies by a strict father, he grew up with his nose in a book. While his Dragonborn brethren became powerful fighters he chose to learn as much as he could about how the world worked. He eventually settled on researching about the other planes of existence and alternate dimensions. He teaches at the Mountainview School for Planar Research, occasionally exploring ancient ruins up until he injured his leg exploring a cavern. Description of how they look: A tall, skinny, red Dragonborn man. Wears glasses and a long coat. He has a bum leg and walks with a walking staff, that he also uses a a 'club' when needed, and as a 'rod' when channeling his innate draconic powers.
Thanks for your submission, Shaz! I like the idea of a dragonborn; they never occur to me during character creation. For background, I know this is equal parts lazy DM and convenient storyteller, but you can choose the world from which your character originates. Without giving too much away, the Academy draws the best and the brightest from every D&D world. You have my blessing to draw from your favorite!
Sounds like Quantum Leap with a bit of Sliders thrown in. Both shows I really likes, with the exception of QL's ending, what was up with that? Anyway I'd love to play something like this. The possibilities are endless.
Name: Tristan HallowDeep
Race Half-elf
Class: Lore Bard
Archtype: Assistant or possibly bystander
Desired Background: Courtier
Backstory: Tristan is an elf who was born to be a bard, he was trained from birth by his family to serve in the highest courts. His family being made up of generations of famous bards on both sides. He showed great aptitude in this and was told from a child he could be the greatest Hallowdeep ever if he worded hard enough. He rebelled against this. While he enjoyed the job he wanted adventure and ran away from home at a young age. It didn't turn out that way though, he ended up at the academy, either as an assistant or some other low job. He's basically trying to run away from what he sees as his fate.
Description: He's a good looking young half-elf, a bit skinny but easy on the eyes and usually catches the ladies attention. He's a bit vain and spend some time grooming each day to get that just woke up look.
Name: Jean O'Donoghue Age: 25 Race: Human Class: Fighter Archetype: Officer of the Law Desired Background: City Watch Alignment: Neutral Good Backstory: For some, having one's parents killed in a failed robbery might drive them to acts of the extreme like donning the cape of a bat and waging a silent war against the criminal elements of the city. Not for Jean, though. After Jean O'Donoghue learned to survive on the street, no longer having anyone to look after her, she joined the city watch to make sure what happened to her wouldn't happen to others, and she would do it the right way. Okay, maybe she'd bend the rules sometimes. Description of how they look: Jean is tall and slender, with shoulder length red hair and bright green eyes. She might seem non-threatening if not for the confident, comfortable way she holds her longsword, indeed she radiates the aura of a playful older sister - until it is time for battle.
Archetype: Arcane Scientist and leader of the experiment if DM allows.
Background: Probably sage, has spent the majority of his life working on the arcane machine that eneed up getting them into this mess.
Backstory: The Project. The Project is all that matters. All his life, hundreds of years, he has worked. Worked on The Project. Through failures and hardship, he worked. It cost him, oh yes, it cost him so dearly. But does that matter? No. When he is a god, none of that will matter. So he worked. He couldn't do it alone, so he had to hire others. He hated the others, but they were necessary. When all is said and done, he would simply take care of them, like he did that one gnome. She wasn't sure whether what they were doing was right. She was a liability. So he made her disappear. Evil? Some might call him that. But those are the labels of men, mere mortals. They will matter not when he is a god. So he works, oh yes, he works works works. He was so close, so close, but then someone had to mess it up. It wasn't he, of course. No, it was everyone else. They all wanted to get him, oh yes they did. But they messed everything up, and they have doomed them all.
Description: A tall elf, slightly hunched over, with long, white, stringy, oily hair and balding at the top. He wears a mask to cover his face that was ruined long ago by an expirement gone horribly wrong, his face sent a few seconds into the past, but the rest of him staying intact, leaving the muscle and bone beneath exposed. He also lost his hand, but he created a better one. One that could travel wherever he wished it(mage hand cantrip). He gave himself a new eye, which could detect magical energy and identify items on sight. He slowly replaced parts of his body, installing new spells, carving spell runes into his flesh. For everything he lost, he gained something greater.
Serion is a horror to behold. He has replaced much of his body with arcane inventions and enhancements. He needs no spellbook, he is the spellbook. One of his arms is outfitted with several vials of pure ele mental energy, as well as a miniature flamethrower. He may breathe out a cloud of poison gas, and project a magical shield.
(OOC I wanted to do something different/new, so I decided to make a wizard that uses his own body instead of a spellbook. He's also essentially a cyborg. Also, I just discovered this: would the DM allow me to take school of invention as my subclass? I know it's UA, but it would work really well for this character.)
