Knights? Fallen paladins? As much as the thought made his stomach churn, Mara and Kanon were probably right. This doesn't bode well. He felt like he had just peeled another layer of the proverbial union, yet this new layer blocking his view from what was held in the center was rotted and black. That said, there group had already faced some pretty tough opponents and were still standing. And they were stronger than ever with a new addition. However, the thought made him think:
"So they're dressed as scary knights. New Dawn ex-paladins. But who's to say they aren't in disguise? What if they're potential allies who killed the original wearers of the armor, and are off to see what information they can glean from the hobgoblins? As much as I want to take them out and get some questions answered, I think there are too many variables for me to feel confident planning a means of ambush for them. We just don't know enough to act against them at the moment."
"Then we watch them. See what they do." Mara shook her head again. "I don't like this. It feels... wrong." She grumbled to herself, and began walking again. "I don't like this," she repeated.
Kanon nods, "Caution is the better part of valor, so they say." He continues to walk as well, "Keep your eye on them Petti. If they make like they're coming to intercept us, we must be ready."
Disinterested in the pair of knights heading towards the first group of hobgoblins, the group starts to push northwest toward Beregost. Making their way through the terrain, they come across a large field of stone with a handful of huge boulders in the middle. Deciding to pass by the stones on the right side of them, they only make it a couple hundred feet past when Gaia spot some movement among the boulders. She tenses when her eyes catch sight of a massive, gray-skinned humanoid chewing like an apple on the fresh carcass of a lamb, approximately two-hundred feet away.
Pettilaen freezes in fear, toppling off of Mara onto the ground beneath. Either from the loud thud of a gnome's body hitting the rock or the group's movement, the giant locks eyes on the party. Quickly tossing the lamb's body aside, he stands up, and the group sees a talisman hanging from his neck... It's a crude piece of iron etched with a symbol looking something like a single blade piercing a horned skull and shield. At full height now (easily fifteen feet tall), he begins to pull a large stone from a sack on his belt.
The fear of the giant and anger at Pettilaen were nearly palpable to him as he scrambled to get his act together to counter the giant. Please tell me he can't throw that stone this far.
"D'arvit," Zina swore, jumping from Portia's shoulders and running as far as her little feet could carry her. The illusionist cast Silent Image, creating the illusion of a dwarfen fighter (that looked very similar to Bullden) poking out from behind one of the rocks.
The giant plants it feet to throw and hurls a large stone into the air. It flies in a clean arc and strikes a brutal blow to... Zina's illusionary dwarf. The giant's face contorts in annoyance and confusion as it reaches behind its back to retrieve a massive hunting horn slung over its shoulder...
(META: The giant's Insight was no match for Zina's 24 on Deception... The giant rolled with disadvantage due to range, but still easily landed a stone on the illusion with a 14.)

Pettilaen's fall and Zina's swearing caused Kanon to turn in the direction of the giant. His eyes go wide at the sight of it as it launches a huge boulder into a shimmering dwarf. She saved our asses again, Kanon thought. It took him a moment that felt like forever to get his knees to stop shaking, but when he did he sprinted towards the giant at full speed (move 60).
As he does, he pulls his rapier and a small bit of something from his pouch.
Mara was surprised by the sudden lack of gnome on her shoulders, not that she was going to complain. She watched as Kanon ran past her and dashed after him, raising her shield before her. "Stay low," she said quietly. "Hopefully it will focus on the illusion long enough for us to get to it." She reminded herself to thank Zina for that later.

As soon as the giant began to reach for his large hunting horn, Pettilaen's mind raced with solutions to keep the giant from blowing the horn. A Silence spell? No, he didn't know of any, and could only hope that if someone in the group knew one, they would use it. No, the only idea he had was an incredibly stupid one, and would take a wicked stroke of luck from Tymora herself.
Activating his Spazzledazzle [Bladesong], Pettilaen dashed towards the giant, trying to taunt him by shouting, "You don't think you can fight us all by yourself, so you're blowing that horn? Coward!" If it didn't work, they were going to have to hightail it once they killed the giant. If it did work, then he knew the giant was going to focus on him, and he might just have to hightail it himself. I just hope the brute understands Common.
OOC: Bonus action to activate Bladesong [increases movement speed by 10 ft. and increases his AC by 3], movement of 40 ft., then action to Dash for an additional 40 ft., and a Persuasion/Bluff/Intimidation check [didn't matter for him] of 15.
Portia knowing she has to be closer to do anything useful charges after the others bringing up the rear. She flanks slightly right so she is not lined up with anyone else so the rather large rock had less chance of taking her out as it was thrown at Petti. Well, she was hoping the giant would have the same reaction as most people had with the impetuous gnome. She laughed and made sure she was ready to cast something useful.
(Dash action for 60 foot run)

With a snarl and a smile, the giant drops his horn and pulls another stone from his bag. His thick muscles strain as he heaves the stone in a tall, arcing trajectory to cover the distance. It takes a moment for Pettilaen to realize the throw is aimed at him, after which he speaks a quick incantation to create a Shield, though the casting proves to be a moment too late as the projectile hits Pettilaen full in the chest, smashing him into the ground with a crunch and a thud and bounding away to land in a thick bramble of thorns.
Gaia takes flight just in time, avoiding the hit by a splinter of a moment. She flies in a circle over Pettilaen's motionless body, shrieking like a dinosaur.
It sounds as if Pettilaen is alive, though mortally wounded, as his pained gasps for breath slowly wheeze and whine.
(META: 23 to hit from the giant, disadvantaged due to range, which matches Pettilaen's AC even with the spell effects)
Mara ducked behind her shield as a boulder went flying past her. They were going to be slaughtered if she couldn't get close enough to get the creatures attention. She glanced back at where the boulder was aimed. It looked as if the illusion had run its course. She braced herself and ran ahead further, trying to close the distance between herself and her enemy.
Portia, glad she had run a bit to right does not wind up in the way of the rock after it bounces of Pettilaen. She veers toward him and slides to a stop on her knees next to him. Hopefully the stupid giant would ignore her while she put healing into the gnome's not so cute looking body. The spell seems not to do as much as she expected, but it would get him back on his feet for the moment.

Kanon moves ahead cautiously from cover to cover. Eventually he reaches some partial cover fifty feet from the giant and prepares himself for any attacks that might come his way.
His heart was racing... was he really going to do this? He had an idea, but if it failed he knew he would end up squished like Pettilaen.
