Character Hooks Please pick out one of these hooks.
General Goal: (Any) Meet Me in Phandalin -- The characters are in the city of Neverwinter when their dwarf patron and friend, Gundren Rockseeker, hires them to escort a wagon to Phandalin. Gundren has gone ahead with a warrior, Sildar Hallwinter, to attend to business in the town while the characters follow with the supplies. The characters will be paid 10 gp each by the owner of Barthen's Provisions in Phandalin when they deliver the wagon safely to that trading post.
Personal Goal: (Noble background) Civilize Phandalin -- You were born to a noble family displaced from their lands by the eruption of Mount Hotenow. In the last three or four years, hardy settlers have been rebuilding another ruin near the city: the old town of Phandalin, which orcs sacked five centuries ago. Clearly, what Phandalin needs now is a civilizing influence—someone to take the reins and bring law and order. Someone like you. You’re not the only one with such ideas. A knight named Sildar Hallwinter recently set out for Phandalin in the company of a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker. They plan to reclaim an ancient mine and restore Phandalin to a civilized center of wealth and prosperity. Since your goals align, Hallwinter should be willing to assist you.
Personal Goal: (Any) Teach the Redbrands a Lesson -- You’ve heard that Daran Edermath in the town of Phandalin is looking for people of courage and principle to teach some bullies a lesson. These thugs, the Redbrands, have been throwing their weight around in Phandalin. Putting a stop to their villainy is a worthy goal.
Personal Goal: (Criminal, Urchin, Charlatan background) Get Your Revenge -- You are a former member of the Redbrands gang in the town of Phandalin. You've left their company, but someone in the Redbrands nearly got you killed, and you sure would like to know who it was. And then you’d like to take your revenge—on that person, on Glasstaff, maybe on all the Redbrands. And you just got a tip that might help you: someone named Halia Thornton also has it out for the Redbrands. She lives in Phandalin, which means showing your face to the Redbrands who still want you dead.
Personal Goal: (Any) Reconsecrate the Defiled Altar -- Through visions delivered in your trances, your god has called you to a new mission. A goblin tribe has made its lair in an ancient ruin now called Cragmaw Castle, where they have defiled a shrine once sacred to {Insert Deity}. Now dedicated to the vile goblin god Maglubiyet, the altar is an offense to {Insert Deity} that must not stand. You’re sure {Insert Deity} has greater things in store for you if you can complete this quest. In the meantime, your visions suggest that Sister Garaele—a priest of Tymora, the goddess of luck—can aid you in the town of Phandalin.
Personal Goal: (Any) Drive Off the Dragon -- The ruins of Thundertree call to you. Your family and their friends once lived in prosperity there, and now they’re reduced to menial labor. The ruins are haunted by ash zombies, and rumor has it a dragon has made its lair in the Old Tower, but those are problems a hero can solve. Slay the dragon, or drive it off, and you’ll prove—to yourself and everyone else—you’re a real hero, destined for greatness.
Born a smiths son with lofty dreams he read the tome of travelling scholars who had stopped to have their horse shod. Unwittingly he entered into a pact giving him power at a great cost.
Chaotic neutral he is excited to escort that wagon to Phandalin.
Backstory: Demetrion devoted his entire life to his order’s mission to rid the realms of the foul magic that beset them. Over the years the grueling demands of this mission took a palpable toll on the once buoyant paladin. Hunting down miscreants became second nature to him but it also made him withdrawn, brooding and slow to trust. Committed to fulfill his holy mandate, Demetrion knows that there can be no mercy for the wicked and that the end definitely justifies the means. Recently, he managed to track down a warlock which had been eluding him for quite some time, only barely surviving the ensuing encounter. Now the Paladin is searching for a new quest in his fight against the forces haunting the world.

His deadbeat parents decided that they werent ready to have a child...8 years after giving birth to him. From there Tarillon had to find his own way, never trusting anyone and using his skills at music and not being seen to make a living. Naturally that led him to the Redbrands, young and innocent he made the perfect spy; able to infiltrate through performance or subterfuge. However, being successful had it's drawbacks in an organization like the Redbrands, and competing interests sometimes got you caught in the crossfire. In a game of one-up-manship being played by the higher ups in the organization, Tarillon was given much more than he could handle. Rather than the inevitable death or incarceration that would have resulted, Tarillon left, no longer desiring to put his life at risk for a mere few coins. As you might expect, the Redbrands weren't too happy about this, but rather than wait for the Redbrands to send another assassin (the last one didn't fare too well) Tarillon has decided to take the fight to them. If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without knowing it. ~ Herodotus
Description / Background: The youngest child of the high elf house Mox, Kelsier has always lived a pampered life. Having everything handed to you in life can make one bored, however. By the time he reached the age of 50, Kelsier began using his highborn magic to secretly steal trinkets, food, and money, giving all of his ill gotten gains to the poor. His family, catching wind of his deeds, has sent him to the rural farm village of Phandalin to restrict his freedom and to help revive the town, expanding the influence of House Mox. Presenting a noble face to any newcomers, Kelsier keeps his true nature a strictly guarded secret.

However at one stormy night, in the woods he and his cat were ambushed by some bandits and his cat ran away while he got captured for human trafficking. Or he would be if not other adventurers that helped him and others out. After that he decided that he could do no good by himself and moved onward to find a party or at least work with one. An orphan of the streets, Arvel quickly learned that his good looks and silver tongue could allow him to get away with almost anything. A low-level conman, he prides himself on never taking anything that wasn't freely given.
A year ago, he was ready to hang it all up and go straight. Because he'd met Luala and wanted to marry her. On the night he planned to propose, Arvel approached Luala sitting on a stone bench in a park. When he touched her shoulder, she fell to the ground. Her throat had been slashed and her dress was dyed deep red with her blood.
Arvel turned to shout for help but he stopped suddenly. A bloody dagger had mysteriously appeared in his hand. Stunned by this, Arvel didn't hear the approach of the watchmen.
Seized, jailed, and set to be put on trial for murder he sat in his cell weeping over his fate and his lost love.
That's when She appeared. The woman appeared Elven, but was more beautiful than any elf Arvel had ever seen before. The offer was simple, Arvel would be given his freedom and a small measure of power to continue his conniving ways and in exchange he would render Her service when She required.
Seeing no other way out, Arvel accepted and became a Warlock in service to the Archfey woman.
The next morning he was released from prison. The guards explained that a common street thug had come forward and confessed to the murder. Arvel took all he had saved and set out for a life of adventure to escape his pain and grow his power.

As a note, this character is an attempt to build a character using the power of fate as much as possible. Race, Class, Background, and as much else as I can put together has been crafted by dice rolling/random number generators, and I will attempt to build a story afterwards to see how it works. Wish me luck!
Name: Geyser Class: Cleric Race: Water Genasi Background: Sage Description/Backstory:
Geyser was born to a Dwarven mother and an absentee Marid father, and thought it best not to press for details. He lived with his father in Thundertree until the call of the sea proved too strong, at which point he made his way into the ocean, where he found lodging in an undersea library catering to mermaids, aquan elves, and water genasi like him. In this library, he discovered a powerful thirst for knowledge, and a passionate belief that the goddess Umberlee, his presumed ancestor, was misunderstood. Geyser poured hours into crafting a treatise that would prove the value of his favored deity... hours that meant that he didn't hear about what happened to Thundertree for a solid month. Now, he has put aside his work, important though it is, to avenge his father and homeland.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Chosen Hook: (Pick 1 from below.)
Drive Off the Dragon -- The ruins of Thundertree call to you. Your family and their friends once lived in prosperity there, and now they’re reduced to menial labor. This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

He would even help the cook on the quieter nights, claiming to be "the best Goliath cooker in the world"... nobody argued with him. Time passed and news reached the town of the Redbrands. Spurred on by his mother's wish for him to make a name for himself and encouragement from the town, Folari decides his skills could be put to good use elsewhere. In those harrowing weeks, Hexody witnessed true evil that she carries with her even today. Her father had survived but his injuries precluded raising her, protecting her, by himself. In a dream, Milil's herald, Seraphina, guided Hexody and her father to the bardic College of Lore. There she learned to perform and trust in Seraphina, who continued to visit her in her dreams. The demons did not return and Hexody grew into a young woman. Last night, Seraphina visited her again, this time with a task. "Milil requires your aid," the angel said. "A shrine to her has been desecrated. Go forth and protect her legacy as she has protected you." Name: Arvel
Class: Warlock (Archfey)
Race: Half-Elf
Background: Charlatan
Description/Backstory:

Name: Geyser
Class: Cleric
Race: Water Genasi
Background: Sage
Description/Backstory:
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Chosen Hook: (Pick 1 from below.)
Drive Off the Dragon -- The ruins of Thundertree call to you. Your family and their friends once lived in prosperity there, and now they’re reduced to menial labor. The ruins are haunted by ash zombies, and rumor has it a dragon has made its lair in the Old Tower, but those are problems a hero can solve. Slay the dragon, or drive it off, and you’ll prove—to yourself and everyone else—you’re a real hero, destined for greatness.

Name: Hexody Trebale
Class: Bard (healing/support build)
Race: Aasimar (female)
Background: Haunted One
Description/Backstory: The heavens rejoiced when Hexody Trebale was born but the denizens of the infernal planes noticed as well. She was a happy child, loved and celebrated by her village until demons razed it to the ground. In the attack, the vampire Dartoss absconded with Hexody, who was only 6, and transported her far across the realm before noble pursuers, tasked by Milil, Helm, and Sune, rescued her. Go forth and protect her legacy as she has protected you." With that, Hexody kissed her father on the cheek and set out to serve her god, a song on her lips, and dark memories weighing her soul.
