Marion: "We've gotten limited permission to explore The Pit. Until recently, it has been off-limits by the cleric leaders and the Viscount of Nunkreet. They are worried about disturbing the things that are buried down there. But we convinced them we could do academic exploration, without causing another Mad Earl Massacre."
Sallah: "Although it is mostly stillness down there, you do get the occasional underground danger. We had hired a small guild for protection. They tried to extort renegotiate for higher rates, which is why we were hoping to find other adventurers as bodyguards."
"We only have limited times when we are allowed in The Pit. Tomorrow is one of those days. We don't want to waste the opportunity. If you can accompany us tomorrow, we will have time to find other bodyguards for later trips."
"We can pay you 50 GP (total) for 10 hours of protection. Hopefully we won't encounter any trouble during that time. If we find any historical relics, those will go to a museum. But any ores or gemstones we come across, your group gets the best one, and then 50% split of the remainder."

Reverie hums as she hears what Marion offers to them. 50% split of the remainder when they get the ores or gemstones... It sounds quite unusual for her to this offer. Her blue-green eyes shift to the others. "What do you all think of this offer, my friends?" She asks quietly, "I feel like this can be a good offer for us to learn about something new."

"Count me in. It'll cover the cost of our previous hiring, and besides, The Pit sounds interesting," Isk says to the group. He then turns to Marion and Sallah, "Whats the story with The Pit?"
(OoC: Every time he says, "as you know", he is talking like you are a fellow researcher, instead of adventurers who have only recently visited Nunkreet.)
"As you know, the Pit has been here as long as the Primus road and the original temples along the Avenue of the Divine, from over 200 years ago. There were more expeditions when it was first discovered, but bad fates happened to those who tried to 'conquer' it. Or at least, that is what folk tales say... It doesn't help that the long-lived races, like the elves, seem either to be disinterested, or genuinely do not know of the history of this city."
"No one is allowed near The Pit. It has more restrictions from the authorities than the Primus Road, but it is much easier to fence off. And after the Massacre, pretty much everyone (except us) stay clear. We have even heard the a Nightwalker came out at that time," (image link), "but since there are no live eyewitnesses to that event, we can't verify the truth of it."
"We stay clear of anything looking like a temple or a crypt. But we have found houses and other buildings, that were somehow were buried in the earth. Objects from that time are invaluable, for historians... Take a copper necklace from a street vendor. Worthless. Bury it in ground, and in hundreds of years, it becomes priceless."
"It also helps that we've found the occasional pocket of minerals and gemstones. The magic down there seems to enhance the ground in the area. Selling those rocks keeps the funding going for our research... Maybe we'll find enough some day, that I can rebuild my tavern that burnt down."

One of the others in the party can fill him in on the tiny bit that they've heard... After the caravan had arrived at Nunkreet (before they met Isk near Greensville), Bommie gave the group some training and arranged for their city IDs. While giving some trivia about Nunkreet, Bommie had said something about it as well. (Post #618 - link , last "spoiler" block) She didn't want to talk too much about it. (Post 625 - link ).
If Iskander wants to ask more, this pair are academics who know a bit about the local history. They might answer questions... while your party is guarding them in the The Pit, maybe.

"The creatures are mostly what you would find in the Underdark. The guild guards fought a few things like aPiercer, and another time aGrell. We did see a pack ofghouls, but we were far enough away to avoid them."
"The primary hazard is the number ofBerbalangs." (She is a bit surprised that you are familiar with them. Those were the winged goblin-esque creatures that were around the Allip in the Shadowfell, that could create a psychic clone of themselves.) "Those creatures are mostly in the Astral plane, gathering secrets from the dead and scavenging from the remains of dead gods. We stayed away from the areas where we see them, and having a fighting group seems to discourage them from harassing us."
"We have also seen the discarded arm of aGaleb Duhr, a boulder-like creature native to the Plane of Earth... And our last trip, there wasPurple Wormfeces. That was probably what scared those guild rascals into demanding more money."

With a hastily written contract on a cloth handkerchief, the pair of academics shake your hands. The plan is to meet at half-past noon tomorrow outside the guard station east of The Pit. (This is after the 4th morning of training by Froskan and Trimyrai.) The expedition will be 10 hours in total (climb down, look around, climb out), so it will be close to midnight when you get back to the inn.
Sallah and Marion will lead the way, but the party will decide if it is better to fight or flee, if creatures are encountered. It is expected that 60% of your time will be spent watching or scaring away the underground beasties, and the other 40% looking for valuables.
(OOC: At any particular moment, 3 of the party is watching, and 2 are searching for loot. If you have any other plans or ideas, feel free to make suggestions.
I'd like everyone to make 6 rolls: 2 Perception, 1 Intimidation, 2 Investigation, and a d100.)
