Landrae turns to her companions, shrugs her soldiers and says "Well, someone strikes me as a little overly impressed with herself... And for once, it isn't me!"
[Though the party probably note that her tone is lowered enough that it doesn't carry back to Alais.]
"Anyway, back to more important matters, Duncan, I believe you promised to buy the first round in?"
As Jack makes his way towards the Bloody Thorn, he is looking for signs of any kind of thieves guild or organized crime activity (cryptic signs/lookouts/markings/etc...)
((Not sure what kind of check you would like but I will proactively do Perception: 24 ))
The town has no shortage of questionable characters or decrepit taverns, and the closer you get to Wall Side the more impoverished your surroundings become.
The Bloody Thorn is adjacent to an abandoned warehouse, or perhaps a repurposed warehouse would be a better description judging by the clamor issuing from within. Beneath the worn sign depicting a thorn in a pool of red a bouncer leans against the doorway of the Bloody Thorn, thick arms crossed over his barrel chest. A goblin ratcatcher walks past, whistling a tune and snacking on a particularly large rodent specimen. Thin trickles of water fill the cracks in the cobblestone street.
“Just some adventures taking a break from the road. You won’t get any trouble from us. Gate guard said this was a good place to get some food and drink. Speaking of business, do you know where we would find mercenary jobs for hire in this fine town?”
The rest of the group isn't far behind, and follow Jack to the tavern. Elber seems considerably less relaxed in this part of town than he was at the gate with the guards, and looks like he'd welcome any fool trying to pick a fight with him... at least for as long as he doesn't have a drink in his hand.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Duncan will follow Jack in, grab a seat and order a round for the group; waving the group over to join. Though not necessarily at home in a rough part of town, he's no stranger to dealing with strangers where actions are often louder than words. Passing the bouncer he'll ask "What's with the Goblin? Where I'm from they're not seen in town often. Though it looks like you've got that one doing appropriate work at least."
a) how's the beer here? and how much for the round?
b) what types of people are around? PERCEPTION or INSIGHT18
Inside the Bloody Thorn the heat is stifling and the atmosphere is raucus. The accommodations consist of several wooden cots scattered around the central hearth and a few decrepit rooms situated in the back of the tavern.
Duncan takes in his surroundings and notes several patrons of interest. Among the most interesting is a thin human with a wide-brimmed hat and stained clothes, a halfling with spectacles and straight blonde hair, an overweight elf in fine clothes, and an elf with curly blonde hair and hazel eyes. The innkeeper, a thin dwarf with a dagger at her belt, hands you a parchment on which the menu is scrawled in an almost illegible hand.
Buckwheat Porridge, Mug of Beer (4 cp)
Boiled Sausage and Whey Cheese, Tankard of Bitter (11 cp)
Acorn Bread and Soft Cheese, Mug of Mead (5 cp)
Stewed Cabbage, Mug of Bitter (4 cp)
Vegetable Stew, Mug of Bitter (2 cp)
Roasted Oxen and Oat Biscuits, Tankard of Stout (9 cp)
Roasted Pork and Whey Cheese, Tankard of Perry (13 cp)
Landrae enters with Elber, seeing him a little edgy, leaving Duncan with the bouncer to see if he can glean any extra information from him.
"Elber, I'll join Jack and thee in but a moment, I want to make sure Duncan doesn't forget the order between the bouncer and bar!"
Landrae lingers in the entrance, trying to gauge the mood of the tavern and it's patrons, (Perception: 7) her fingers itching to strike up some song on lute or flute....
To the innkeeper, eyeing the dagger: "get much trouble in here?" Looking over the menu "give me (5, or 6 if our wizard friend joins) cheese and mead for the table please" and I'll hand over 3silver
" You can never be too careful. " The dwarf replies to the first question. To the second she grunts an affirmative and bustles off, reappearing moments later with the requested edibles.
Jack looks at Duncan and says “Thank you. My coin purse needs some more weight soon. We are going to need a paying job or we may be catching rats out there with the goblin. What kind of work have you done in the past?”
Landrae moves over to the table, not getting a read from the atmosphere whether a full on performance would be appreciated.
"Yer a good man Duncan, as dependable in the tavern as in the field." Landrae smiles her thanks.
"I won't disagree with Jack on the state of our accounts. I might be able to drum up some passing change with a tune or two at the Pavillion." As if to emphasise her point, Landrae draws her pan flute and starts to pipe a merry tune for her companions. Not so loud as to be heard above the ambient chatter, but loud enough to prick the attention of any nearby appreciative ear. (performance: 18)
The overweight elf turns around to regard you. "Bravo, bravo!" He exclaims, his red face beaming. "As good as any at The Pavilion, I'll warrant. Allow me to introduce myself: Elron, dealer of magic potions." He stands and displays his impressive assortment or bottles and jars hanging from his thick belt.
"Jack, I've done little work so far. Mostly spent the last few years training. I'm eager to give my skills a go" as he absent mindedly twirls his glaive between his fingers.
"As long as you do not cause trouble Alais need not concern herself with you." She says, and without another word turns and strides away.

Jack will wait for the rest of his group before entering. He will try and strike up a conversation with the bouncer.
”G’day, not too much trouble today happening here today for you I hope. Just waiting for my friends to arrive. Any advice on what to eat here?”
The bouncer cracks his knuckles menacingly. "What's your business?" He demands.

Jack gives his best smile back to the bouncer,
“Just some adventures taking a break from the road. You won’t get any trouble from us. Gate guard said this was a good place to get some food and drink. Speaking of business, do you know where we would find mercenary jobs for hire in this fine town?”
The man jabs a meaty finger to the tavern. "Well, go on then."

“Magic potions?” Jack says with a sarcastic smile, “You got any magic beans for sale too?”
