Trying to keep the rooms attention Varinth speaks up
To be honest Mister Bugbear I'm glad you said that. This scroll is way beyond my abilities and I would most likely turn all our pubic hair into snakes if I tried reading it, if you'll excuse my graphicness Madam.
I think we may be all fighting from the same side of a coin. You are looking for the lost mine. So are we. You have the dwarfs but still remain here, so I can assume you have yet to get the information you need. My party has a mind reader and a professional torturer. I believe you may be trying to cut the harvest turkey with a broadsword. We can be be your carving knife. What do you say?
Deception: 7 Using Tides of Chaos to gain advantage.
Dekhan, you take advantage of Varinth's speech to peek in. You do indeed see two dwarfs in the north-west corner, one dead or unconscious, the other sitting up, eyes upon you. Both are tied and gagged.
Varinth, the bugbear sits back back in his chair. Mine? Ah, yes. That's Vyerith's business, isn't it my dear? He turns to look at the drow. You and your dear Spider. I myself am interested in power and money. Power, I suspect I have less of that now, now that you have been through my forces - though I warn you, many are out on patrol and will return in time. But the matter of the moment is money. Vyerith wishes to purchase these dwarves - so that she can kill them, of course - but perhaps you can make me a better offer.
The drow turns on him. You play a dangerous game, King Grol. I do not thing you wish to anger the Black Spider, and he will not tolerate others to know of the mine's location. These fools must all die, the Rockseekers and their would-be rescuers.
The hobgoblins shift their attention to the drow, and seem to convey a warning to her not to challenge the king too much. She raises her hands in a placating gesture, and the room's attention returns to Varinth and Dekhan.
Well there we go. That's more like it. Money you say? Well, I assume we would be looking to compensate you for your losses as well King Grol? So what figure would we be looking at for three Hobgoblins, a band of goblins, a giant wormy thing, the recapture of a wandering Bugbear and two dwarfs?
Varinth is smiling but has not moved. He still holds up the scroll for quick reading and the staff is pointed (now more subtly) at the Drow.
Wormy thing? The bugbear thinks for a moment. Ah, the grick. Poor Llupo will miss his pet... except I suppose you killed Llupo as well. I shall miss his chanting, I suppose.
No, no compensation is needed. Hobgoblins will take time to recruit and train but goblins are ten a copper, and there's no shortage of wormy things and other monstrosities in these forest. Let us talk to the dwarfs. You have come to rescue them, have you not? You have a heroic stink about you. I will take five hundred gold pieces for one, eight hundred for the pair. He turns to the drow. Can you match that offer, Lady Vyerith?
Dekhan laughs, long and loud. King Grol? Not long for long if you deal with drow. She says no one can know of the mine’s location. Or the mine itself, I’ll wager. Drow do not treat with bugbears. Once she has what she wants you and your subjects will spend what’s left over your lives under the earth and under the whips of cruel Drow masters? Is that what you want for yourselves and your subjects? To toil and suffer at the hands of slave drivers until you die? Give us the dwarves and the drow and we can settle this.
Strix exchanges a quizzical look with anyone on the near side of the door, mouthing "Drow?" both wondering what that is and why Dekhan wants one. They must be pretty dangerous, because if they're not then there's a whole pile of dead hobgoblins, wolves and bugbears strewn across the countryside that says these guys are ****ed and ought to be speaking more politely or at least offering some kind of discount on the Dwarves. He lets the phantom Iarno fade since there doesn't appear to be an alpha strike coming.
Dekhan, the bugbear smiles at your words. So squeamish, little... human? No, aasimar, I think. Rare, your kind. The drow would value you as a slave, to be sure, am I not right Vyerith? The drow nods absently. Surface drow treat with a great many creatures, aasimar and bugbears being far from the most unusual. But if the drow wants slaves, then Grol in his might can oblige. There are always so many elves and humans and dwarfs running around. He has only to make the request, and pay the price. No, young man, I will not give you anything. And as Vyerith rightly points out, angering the Black Spider is a dangerous course of action. I am minded to give Vyerith her prize, unless you have something to impress me?
Right lads...seems like the lady needs to stay alive and the rest can go to ash...Vaz... don't smoke the drow til we have info on this spider... I been waiting to test me pliers on that one.
I can't imagine there's more te say.
Unless someone truly seems confounded by my choice of words and gives me the stop sign, Scupper would let an arrow fly at the king...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Round One:
A: Incantis and Varinth B: Vyerith C: Dekhan, Strix and Scupper D: Hobgoblins 1 and 2, and the Wolf E: Sildar F: King Grol
Varinth, your fireball erupts in the room, causing devastation. The bugbear, hobgoblins, wolf and drow are all caught in the blast, with the dwarves seemingly spared.
The two hobgoblins are killed outright; their blackened bodies crumble to ash before they can fall to the ground. The wolf and bugbear are severely wounded, the wolf howling at the burns now covering its body as its fur and flesh meld into a horrifying mess. King Grol does not howl; he just looks at you. The drow seems to have avoided much of the damage.
(Actually, Varinth needs to make an ability check to cast a Fireballspell scroll, as it's a higher level than he can normally cast. Varinth, please roll a d20 and add 2 (your spellcasting modifier). The DC is 13.
((C’mom Varinth! Does anyone have inspiration to use for the roll? Provided they’re transferable. I would but I used mine back in the Breugor battle.))

Assuming Varinth gets the gist from the body language of the King and The Drow and perhaps Dekhans reaction when he peaked around the corner...
Varinth chuckles.
Sorry to laugh Your Highness but The Drow and I have very similar names. My name is Varinth. But I spell my name VERICUS MALINiSs CoRminal!
Vaz casts the fireball directed at Hobgoblin 2, hoping to avoid the dwarfs that he believes are on the other side of the room.
Damage: 27
OOC: Do I roll for Wild Surge when using a scroll?
Sorry I was writing that while Scuppers came up. Obviously I will just cast without the deception if an arrow flies past my ear.
I'm cool with firing the second I realize you're not saying your name...samesies 😁
