Considering our usual marching order has Alten up front behind Rees, does Alten hear either side this exchange? If it was earlier while Meepo and Rees is on the other side of the room with the goblins and if they're trying to keep it down, then I would say he probably wasn't paying attention. If it happens after we form up and are getting ready to move out, he's probably more alert.
