OOC: Any part of the landscape that looks like it would function as a barrier and keep the crabs away?
"If we spread out, we might be able to outpace them; I don't see a reason to injure them if we don't have to. Is anyone especially fleet of foot and can check that sign to make sure that we're not running into danger?" She points it out to the others. "I should like to know if it's a friendly welcome or a warning."
OOC: Any part of the landscape that looks like it would function as a barrier and keep the crabs away?
[OoC]: Perhaps the southwest peak of rock. The crabs don't seem to be moving full speed, outrunning them would be quite easy. There are eight of them currently shuffling towards your group.

Zagrot turns to Red, then looks back at the approaching crabs. He reluctantly grunts, then heads to the rowboat, sliding the crowbar into the loose loop of cloth at his side. "Aghzit," he repeats, pointing at the crabs. "I think they bite."
Turning his attention to the rowboat, he grabs it by the bow with both hands and begins dragging it at an incredible speed, nearly pulling a few of you off your feet. It's obvious after a few steps that the orc is capable of moving the boat on his own.
"Where do boat go?" he asks between heaves of effort.
OOC:
Since Zagrot's Powerful Build trait doubles his push/drag/lift, I assume that means he essentially doubles his STR in the context of pushing, dragging, and lifting? If that's the case, then that gives him 30. If it's not the case, let me know, and I'll edit the post.
I can not make out what the sign says from here. Let us head in that direction, at the very least it may give us some information. I'll watch our backs for the crabs.
Yaro takes up position at the rear of the group walking backwards with warhammer and shield drawn, attempting to act as a barrier between the approach crabs and the group.

Lifting and Carrying
Your Strength score determines the amount of weight you can bear. The following terms define what you can lift or carry.
Carrying Capacity. Your carrying capacity is your Strength score multiplied by 15. This is the weight (in pounds) that you can carry, which is high enough that most characters don't usually have to worry about it.
Push, Drag, or Lift. You can push, drag, or lift a weight in pounds up to twice your carrying capacity (or 30 times your Strength score). While pushing or dragging weight in excess of your carrying capacity, your speed drops to 5 feet.
Size and Strength. Larger creatures can bear more weight, whereas Tiny creatures can carry less. For each size category above Medium, double the creature's carrying capacity and the amount it can push, drag, or lift. For a Tiny creature, halve these weights.
[OoC]: The rowboat weighs 400 lbs. Zagrot can indeed drag the boat by himself, and can even carry it alone without needing to make a check - although he'll likely struggle.

Zagrot scoots over to make room for the paladin towards the front of the boat. He bellows an approving grunt. "Yes, we start looking for Captain Ebokk's hair-loom."
"Loom, loom, loom," he repeats to himself as he pulls.
Outpaced by the boat, hands on his hips in awe, OK, that is quite impressive Big Guy. Not to be a nudge, but if we get beyond the beach, the boat would be better for being carried not dragged. If I balance the light end, could you carry the heavy end? Let Brothers Yaro and Brozak guard our rear.
I don't think we ought to run all the way to the far end of the island - if they keep following us, let's turn and fight if we find a decent spot or they are bunched together to our advantage. I'd rather if they stop, whether Sister Therne convinces them to, or at the end of the sand. But if not, they are, as Brother Brozak implies, lunch.

The seven of you move swiftly along the sands of the beach, carrying the rowboat towards the long grass. You easily escape the giant crabs, and as soon as you leave the beach it appears that they cease their pursuit. Making your way through the patch of long grass, you come across a crude wooden sign some 40 ft. from the treeline, its weathered surface displaying letters in different alphabets; but too little is visible under a thick layer of mud to make sense of it. Ebokk steps up and uses a handkerchief to wipe away the muck, then curses in dwarvish at the words.
"GNOLL ISLAND"
The words are written in common script, dwarvish runes and another strange language that only Brozak recognises as the demon-tongue. Lying near the signpost is an old crossbow bolt case, ruined and worn, but with 12 functional bolts spilled onto the hard ground nearby. An empty waterskin lays discarded near the bolts, with an image of an angry ettin's face crudely embroidered into the leather.

Until he sees the sign Agh-zit. Shall we set the boat here for now? I was thinking, along Master Abner's line of reasoning, we might want the boat once we get close to the wreck. And with Zagrot's Might, we might have an easy time bringing it there. But I'm not sure we want to carry it through enemy territory. It is a quarter mile and a bit there. Do you think, better to leave it near the wreck, or here and come back and get it if needed?

"Which do we want, detect magic to look for magic traps, or speak with animals to see what the creatures nearby know about any gnolls, etc? I can't do both at once, and they both take a little bit to get going if I don't want to diminish my spellcasting energy for the day." She looks around, trying to see what kind of creatures appear to be around, aside from the giant crabs.
Perception check: 7 (passive: 15)
"I assume going forward that we'll also want to utilize stealth." She looks at the clankier members of the party.
Nodding at Therne's suggestions, Abner adds, lowering his voice slightly, "We're also going to have to travel uncomfortably close to where we're told that abandoned camp is. Somebody oughta sneak ahead and have a peak at it to make sure it's safe. Anyone feeling sneaky?"
"Now I'm also wondering if maybe we should have just rowed directly to the wreck. I was itching to get on land before. Now, not so much."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Speaking with animals could lead to some much-needed information. We do not currently have much to go on, with the shipwreck being our only true lead. Perhaps one of the local fauna at least has information on the location of the gnolls, so we do not walk headlong into their encampment.
Yaro takes a gander around to see if this would be a relatively safe space to give Therne the time she needs, praying for Guidance from Valkur.
Looking around, Therne can't see many other creatures aside from the crabs from her current position. There are a handful of birds high up in the sky around the huge rocky outcrop and a couple of smaller ones in the trees, but other than that there doesn't appear to be any fauna here.
Yaro:
While Yaro doesn't see anything untoward other than the crabs, his keen tortle hearing picks up movement within the trees nearby. It's not close, but the faint sounds of rustling trees and a distant rattling sound signal that something is within a few hundred feet of your group. Maybe even several somethings.
