Cirrus whispers to Burgee in Auran, "He said 'one of your friends has fallen in defense of this town.' Paavu wasn't here when the town was attacked. I think he's talking about Dot. So rather than asking Malman, I'm afraid you'll have to take it up with them." He says, subtly gesturing to Ja'ree, Gwen, and Rose, who is currently sobbing over the body of the tortle in question. "As much as I'd love to back you up on this, I'm trying to figure out what I think the blessing should be used for, in light of the gods' mission for me. But I'm leaning more towards your side."
You can't drown someone with Create Water. If your lungs are containers than your bones are objects. Any Siege monster that attacks you deals double damage because it’s attacking your bones.
Not understanding a lick of Cirrus' whispering or caring to try to really listen in anyhow, Malman simply furrowed his brows to the point his eyes practically disappeared behind the bushy face warmers. "Even if I believe by friend he meant Paavu, that one... was not one to accept such a gift." He glanced off to the side and sees Yue finally pad out of hiding behind a thus un-burnt building. "Paavu was broken goliath decades ago, and by Yue's recounting... Was little better than back then. But knowing he gave life for the closest thing clan in end? That he would satisfied with enough, and want for no more."
He smiled at Cirrus, and then glanced off to where others mourned over Dot. "... And there are yet other magics out there to bring back the dead. Certainly someone in Waterdeep or Neverwinter would know or could, though few and far between... even Rose may someday unlock potential... though by then..." He shakes his head as he returns his attention back to Burgee. "The choice is yours. But whichever choice you make, know there would not be any judgement for me." With that, Mal looks to the Druid. "Elder one. I know it much to ask after all you've done as-is, but... might you have another miracle -- a lesser one to grant to town and snuff out these blazes? If not, I understand."

Appa had been waiting for Burgee's response, when his Gaze shifted to Malman. While I wish that I could spare the energy, I cannot. There is no one left within the town, except us whomst came hither. And I must save mine reserves for the fight ahead. But I will not leave without keeping my word, lest I should fall before I am able to. And they may rebuild, with my blessing, if need be. Should I not return, simply tell mine apprentices that the sun hath set, but tomorrow bringeth a new dawn. They will understand. But yes, it is as the blue one says, kenku. I speak of Roses fallen compatriot for whom she now mourns. Or thine peoples future.
Burgee heard the words and he looked at Rose. His heart sank. And the dream vanished. He would not give it up. Except for her. He loved her. Everyone loved her. He recalled their first meeting where she took care of a drunk and disorderly bird that she'd never met. And he knew in that moment, that Rose had his heart.
"My apologies for misunderstanding Appa," he said. "But if you can lift that treasures heart, my quest will have to continue. For she deserves the world." His head hung low. It was against every instinct he had. But somehow he only wanted to see her smile.
Or know she would. He couldn't bear the loss so he headed toward the tavern to down his sorrow before he headed off to find someone, something, that could bring peace to his kind.
Appa continues to look at the Kenku, with arms crossing. And nods. A huff escaping the druids lips. Despite his general mannerisms, his pace was swift, similar to those people who seem to be able to walk fast naturally. And he makes his way over to where Dot was at. Ja'ree, still mourning in his own way, far more silently than Rose. Gwen, with a comforting hand on Rose's shoulder, and a heavy frown on her face that she refused to let Rose see, if by chance, she looked. Whispering soft words but mostly letting Rose, let it out. Appa was there before too long, standing over all whom were present. Little warrior. I hath come to grant the wish of thine compatriot. The kenku, I gave upon him a choice. Wherein he would accept a blessing to alter his body and restore to it the flight his people once knew, and through him, over generations, barring an untimely death before he could seed his own progeny. he could restore, over time, his entire races skill of flight, lost so long ago, in such ways. He chose instead, for me to return to thee, that which was lost. The tortle that layeth before you. I can, with your permission, and her own, restore her unto life, now that I posesseth mine stave. Choose quickly, little one, for I have one more thing which I must attend to, beforeth I must taketh mine leave.
Despite the fire, Burgee walks inside the tavern, where several many things had happened with the group thus far, some happier, others more sad, while others.. better left forgotten. It was empty, as he entered the fiery building, though luckily the fire had consumed most of what it could, leaving the frame of the door, and some of the walls that had been made of stone, rather than wood, Meanign that at the very least, Burgee would be warmed by the flames as the coldness seeped into his heart. A few ales survived, near the middle of the room, so choosing to finish these mugs, lest to go bad anyway, Burgee would sit there, drinking away his sorrows.
Ja's jaw dropped at the druids words, waiting to see what Rose would choose.
Malman is sure to pat Burgee on the shoulder for the choice, as it was no easy one regardless of possibilities. It was noble thing to sacrifice a dream for another. He knew not he could do the same...
But that was neither here or there. If the tavern wasn't touched yet by flames, he would join Burgee, if only for a short spell. Although before then, he would bow formally in thanks to the druid alongside a word spoken in the favored tongue of nature's protectors before looking to Cirrus, if but for a brief moment. He never said anything though before the moment passes with him giving a curt nod in farewell before makinghis way after Burgee.
Come what may however, Malman would spend the first few minutes trying to get the blaze further under control so that it yet at least would not prove an unexpected danger with a liberal use of druidic magic yet at hand and good 'ol dwarven muscle put to work following a short search for water and a decent sized bucket. At some point after joining in libations, he would mention at least to Burgee, "I don't know what is next for you, my friend. But if want, you can accompany me in catching up to townfolk. With Luck, we may yet turn them around to start sooner than later on repairs. If not, and they yet wish to go to Neverwinter... they will need protectors, and you have yet a dream to see fulfilled elsewhere, no?"
As all of that is going on, Yue followed after the old man, only to lay down at Rose's side.
(started typing this message before those last two were posted, but it still works for the most part if I can talk to Appa before he starts walking)
He sees Burgee walk forlornly away, and cannot help but feel bad. He realizes that he sees a bit of himself in the Kenku. As far as Cirrus knows, the two of them both started their adventuring careers studying the arcane to accomplish something that was very dear to them, and related to their lineage. There is a small part of cirrus that feels resentful towards Appa for presenting such a choice, but he doesn't show it because he recognizes that this is still immense magical power that he is being generous with. He does not want Burgee do resign to hopelessness, if Cirrus had to give up his mission of planar travel, he could only imagine feeling a fraction of the despondency Burgee must be.
Yet at the same time, he looked back at Rose, mourning over the passing of Dot. "Death is a part of life, we cannot have one without the other... do not be sad, it is nature's way." These were the kind of words he heard often after losing his mother. They seem like the kind of words he could say to Rose to help her feel better. But in his experience, the sooner you say those words to someone in mourning, the more offensive they become. But Dot's death was anything but natural. It was a murder. No one deserves such a gruesome fate.
What did his mission say? He looked at his staff, the gift he received from the gods upon arriving in this new world. With no one around him hurt, it was just a piece of wood. It was only among danger that it has shown its power. Symbolic of his mission, he thinks. Only when in the midst of tragedy (for tragedy will come, and that doesn't mean that it is someone's fault.), can he embody his mission of repentance help to close the wounds. If there was something that would heal Rose's emotional wounds right now, it would be to restore the life of a brave woman whose life was cut tragically short.
"Appa, this power you are offering, this blessing which could grant Burgee's people flight once more, is this a power you could regain this ability to use later after bringing back our ally? If so, how long would it take and how could we possibly see you again?"
If Appa confirms that it is possible to grant flight to Burgee at a later point in time, Cirrus will run after Burgee and grab his shoulder, "Burgee, did you hear that? Hope is not lost for your mission." And he will retell Burgee on the time and process required, if any is given.
You can't drown someone with Create Water. If your lungs are containers than your bones are objects. Any Siege monster that attacks you deals double damage because it’s attacking your bones.
As Malman got to work attempting to salvage the town as much as he can since Appa seems apathetic towards it overall, that or simply overly-focused on his current set of tasks. Malman makes steady progress on reducing the fires when he gets to it. Ultimately needing to turn the dirt roads inside out to do so though that wasn't something that couldn't be fixed with enough elbow grease, and was worth salvaging what was possible, including peoples herilooms, tools of their respective trades, and so forth.
Just before Appa leaves, Cirrus pleads with the druid, though the druid seems mostly unresponsive. And no matter how much Cirrus spoke or pleaded, when his speech was done, the druid could only give the -to him, a boy- a look. That look was unreadable. And just before having walked off to speak with Rose, would sayYour request, is one I cannot grant. For you hath not percieved that which lay before you.
Rose hardly heard Appa at first between fits of crying. All that was on Rose's mind at the moment was Dot, and how it was Rose's own fault it came to this. She also remembered Paavu, who she had no time to mourn for or even bury. Rose always knew the risks of adventuring, but she always felt that with Selûne at her back her and her allies would be safe from any harm. It was a naive thought, and even if the Goddess wanted to save a single mortal, it was not always the gods inclination to interfere in matters so directly. But when she heard Appa speak, and heard the offer he gave, hear heart dared to hope that Dot could be saved. But the cost gave her pause. She could hardly believe Burgee would give up his dream, and the restoration of his people, so lightly. She wagered he did not do it lightly, and that it was infact a great personal sacrafice. But Rose was not sure how she could accept such a gift. As much as she wanted Dot back, there were others in town she wanted to bring back too, innocent people who were now dead because Rose failed to protect them. Dot fell in their defense, she died a heros death and if Rose took that away from her, well she could practically see the annoyed look on Dots face already. It actually made her laugh to think about it even through the tears and sorrow.
Rose looked to Appa, then to Ja and Gwen and back to Dot. There wasn't really any thought to the choice, as really there was no choice to make. While Rose appreciated the gift offered, it was not her place. Selûne would guide Dot into the afterlife, and she would be well cared for. To bring her back would be selfish and likely futile since Dot wasn't the kind to accept such gifts anyway. Appa, I thank you for the offer, and I understand and appreciate what that choice must have meant for Burgee, but I cannot accept your offer. Please, help Burgee achieve his dream and restore his people. That gift is worth so much more than a single life, no matter how much I want them back. Rose would wait for Appas acknowledgment before turning back to Dot. When Yue lays down next to her Rose pets the wolf before laying down and curling up next to her, tears returning to her eyes once more.
Appa listened with ease and care. Ultimately closing his eyes, and for the first time, despite the sadness of the situation, a smile could be seen breaking on the old druids face, followed by a soft fit of laughter from Appa. The druids arms uncrossed as he knealt down and patted Rose on the shoulder. His eyes met her, and she saw softness there that had not been there before. Perhaps, if had there been more like thee and thine friend, those like myself, wouldst not be necessary. To find not one, but two of thee. Ah... he sighed, heavily, the softness fading and settling back to that of a tired, serious man.
Standing up, Appa would turn to leave to where he last saw the kenku head off to, however, as he walked away Unfortunately, I cannot grant thy request to revive those here whom have met their end other than thine friend. For their bodies have been mangled, burnt, and eaten. Should I revive them, they wouldst only suffereth their final moments once more. As he walked away to meet the kenku, he diverted long enough to lean down and whisper to Cirrus. That which thee coulds't not see, due to your inexperience, was that the kenku was being given a final test. Had he chose himself, I wouldn't never have granted him his dream. He is ever thinking of it, and mine staff is a living thing, it can read the hearts and minds of those with whom it connecteth. It is a magic lost to time, thus why I cherish it so. It could hear his hearts desire, and see his dream, even with the short time it had been within his possession. Or perhaps, its that he dreamed it so fervently, that it was all the staff couldst see while with him walker of worlds. This too was a test for thee, though yours was far longer. You are not of this world, and your own dreams are of travel that expands beyond planes. This, was merely your first step. speaketh with the 'me' of your world hence you shall return. For there is still time to save those whom here, were lost, and armed with knowledge you did not possess before. And more maturity therein, thou shalt be able to suceed, so long as thee doth not forget thine way. once he had finished whispering in the genasi's ear, revealing he knew more than he let on....
Walking into the smouldering inn, where the Kenku, and likely, Malman, were at.
Having said his piece, Malman would wait however long it takes for either Kenku to consider the offer, or him to finish at least a bottle or two worth of the surviving ale. When he sees the druid come striding in however, he holds out a bottle or mug toasts the air. Then, hops out of his seat to find another far enough away for the Elder Druid to have a relatively private talk with the Kenku while he finishes nurses his own drink.

Cirrus is a bit in shock at what Appa said for multiple reasons: he didn't expect that mutual selflessness was the key to Burgee's dreams, he was more stunned by the concept of returning to his world. He had no idea that was a possibility. But now that it was said, his mind was too busy to see Burgee receive the blessing. He's standing still, lost in his own mind.

You can't drown someone with Create Water. If your lungs are containers than your bones are objects. Any Siege monster that attacks you deals double damage because it’s attacking your bones.
While Cirrus was left to his own devices, and Burgee was drowning himself in his bottle, happy that he'd made Rose happy, but sad, that once more, his dream was within his grasp, only .... only to.... Taking another long, deep drought, downing half of a bottles worth in a single lift. As Malman raises the mug at the Druid, Appa only raises a brow, clearly not understanding the custom, or something along those lines. Regardless, the druid wouldn't be delayed.
And patting Burgee on the shoulder, saying loud enough for Malman to hear. My time continueth to grow short. But thou hast earned the blessing for thine selflessness. As I told the Genasi, had you chose thine dream over the life of the tortle, I would have denied thee. But it seemeth that the small one also seeks to aid a friend, though not the one whom which you thought. She told me to bless you instead, arguing thus: That she would be mad should she be revived when not all could be. But again, my time groweth nigh, and your dream shall be fulfilled. Hefting the staff in one hand, it began to glow, as much as the druid, and that energy was a soft, warm light, like the sunset. Beautiful, and calm. The effluent energy surging like the tide as it flowed into Burgee's body, even if the kenku resisted.
Burgee's body altered over the next few moments, slow enough to not be jarring, but fast enough to not feel like a bandaid being pulled off too slowly. Burgee's body eventually transforming entirely to the true form the kenku once had in the past, and after a minute, it was over. However drunk the Kenku may have been, he remained, but his body was new. Should Burgee both survive long enough, and find a partner, who, much like in his fleeting thoughts, a partner who would foster the future of her people in regaining the flight they had lost so long ago, but never taste its sweetness in any true sense.
With that though, Appa began to stride out. Good luck with your futures, and once more, I apologize for my inability to aid you further as promised. But this threat would negate any assistance I could provide, should it not be stopped before it could grow ever greater.
As Appa passes Cirrus on his way to the tree, he says loudly, to break Cirrus out of his stupor Now remember what I hath told thee. You should be feeling the tug, soon. Your time here hath not been in vain, rather, it hath been to better you for your own worlds future. You will not find yourself here when you wake up. Thou wilt findeth that you are a minority younger. For we met, on a merry chase. He ignored any inquiries after that, moving to the tree, just as two blood-soaked druids returned from the woods, clearly the victors of the fight against the ogre. Touchign the tree in the same manner as he had before, All three vanished moments later.
Cirrus could feel a magical tug at his back, as though magical threads were beginning to coalesce around his form, and felt his time here was limited... if he had anything he wanted to say.... he should say it quickly.
Burgee had been permanently transformed into his races true self, however drunk he may be at the time.
Rose, Gwen, and Ja were now all mourning over the loss of Dot, as friends mourn a loss together. Malman was watching and waiting for his own turn to speak with the kenku or perhaps not.
Everyone's next post will be the last post of this campaign, before I run character resolutions. Make it count! I'll save all the grand OOC speeches for my own next post.
Burgee stood silently for a moment then shook his head to try to clear his thoughts. Was he just dreaming? He looked at his ale. How much did I drink? he asked himself. He shook his head again, but Appa was still there. He moved his body. It felt... different. He looked back up at Appa in awe. "I... I don't know what to say," he looked at his wings but then his thoughts cleared a little and he remembered... "But Rose!" Burgee began to panic. "Did you help her friend? I cannot..." he started but the mage was already heading out of the door.
Burgee looked over the room and saw Malman sitting a bit further away. He stumbled a little as he approached, and continued to try to clear his thoughts. He looked at his wings. This gift had transformed who he thought he was. "Forgive my mood, but yes, I shall be honored to be by your side to help restore the people to their homes, or whatever their destination may be." He flapped his wings sligtly and stared out the door. "What I owe the world cannot be counted." But still the thought. He looked back at the door. "Forgive me! Rose!" was all he said as he hurried out of the door and found that as he hit the street he found without thought that he flapped his wings and began to take flight. His eyes grew wide as he watched the ground get further away. But no time to enjoy. He hurried to where he last saw Rose.
As he flew atop the scene, his heart broke. Burgee landed softly beside Rose and tears began to swell in his eyes. "Rose. I'm sorry. I asked Appa to save Dot. I don't know why..." his voice began to crack as he fell to his knees, joining the others that mourned the loss. "I did not know your friend, but know your heart to be pure and I am sorry I failed to help heal it." His body shook. Burgee's heart was torn. He loved her but knew it could never be. Her heart was elsewhere. His head hung low as he felt her loss.
Burgee would stay and support Rose as she dealt with such a loss, but he knew his path laid elsewhere. And for now that meant helping Malman to restore peace to this town. His distant dream tapped him softly again and he felt a little joy try to creep back into his heart. Who knew what would be ahead, but he hoped that love would be found along the way.

Malman didn't watch in truth beyond the brief moment of surprise at Appa speaking loudly enough to be heard. After which, he largely tuned it out and quietly as much of it was meant for Burgee anyhow, and having already anticipated the nature of the druid's visit. As he did not strike him as a man to bother with social visits just to assuage the conscious of others. Not with that looming threat over the horizon he mentioned. Thinking of it, for a brief moment he entertained the thought of following after the druid.
Then he took another sip, and the moment passes without his feeing moving anywheres. The Mosshammer had yet unfinished business to see to, if only in the reporting of the mine's condition. And while he was uncertain as to whether he'd follow through on its clearing, having felt the tug of the world already urging him elsewhere, the hill dwarf knew better than to let impatience to act get the better of him. As he is mulling this and various other recently suppressed thoughts at last, the faint of scratching of talons on wood headed his way draws him out of reverie. A small smile gets the better of him upon seeing a fully winged Burgee. "Good ot hear, Lad. We leave in an hour." He said as Burgee looked to the door. Then would watch and wave him goodbye as he rushed out, his last words giving way more than enough of intent.
He then sat there for at least another few minutes, nursing his drink, and while awaying what he hoped to be enough time. Enough time, or so he hoped, to not only take on other forms again, but also for Rose to be able enough to at least start making arrangements. By which point an only barely buzzed Malman would join the others. Whether or not he is in time enough for Cirrus' surprise send off, sometime after things are more settled with Rose and the gang, he calls Yue to his side. Yue was of course relunctant, for next to Paavu, Rose was the closest and yet remained in pain. But with the use of his staff to ease communication the two talked in at least semi-private.
Afterwards, Malman announces his plan, entrusting the three to remain do what they could for the town or... make their own departure. But regardless of their choice, he promises Rose that Yue would be returned to her side in a few days, bearing what would like be a part gift from the dwarf. For once he caught up, and at most escorted the townsfolk back to Phandalin to begin rebuilding, his and Burgee's path lay elsewhere. "It's not been long since met. But, it has been eventful to say least since then. No matter what the future holds, I wish you well, Rose. You and your other compatriots. May the mother moon continue to protect you, as the earth mother has done the same for me. And if we should meet again, let it be again as compatriots." He said at that time, and would lightly while patting her on the shoulder.
(To clear it up, he will be using the staff on Yue at some point to cast the Awaken spell on her. So that the next time they meet, assuming Rose and the gang don't come with to at least escort the villagers, she'll be closer to a full NPC with her own thoughts and so forth, and just some pet.)

Cirrus notices small motes of light begin to emanate from his form, and he sprints towards the group of his friends and skids to a halt. “My friends! I’m vanishing. I think I’m going home. But if the gods allow me, I must say my peace while I still have a chance.”
"First, Gwen or Rose, I want you to give this to my mother of this world," he hands out a bag of 1,000 gold, "If you want to use it to buy some clothes from her, by all means, she is a truly gifted seamstress, just make sure she gets it." He also tells them where she lived in his world, hoping that's close enough.
"Burgee, congratulations on receiving this blessing, I can not think of a Kenku more worthy of restoring this long lost gift to his people. You're a dependable and encouraging soul."
"Malman, sorry if I seemed eager to[fantasy equivalent of "throw you under the bus"]when Appa came barging in demanding a staff, it seemed like a reasonable conclusion to jump to at the time, but now it is clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are far more trustworthy and noble-hearted than I gave you credit for."
"Ja'ree... we didn't really talk much, but you seem like a cool dude." *finger guns*
"Gwen, fear is an incredibly crippling emotion, and fearing something is not something you can simply quit doing. However, I am so proud of you for persevering to see this mission through to the end, regardless of it was for no other reason than to help your love succeed, you have always acted admirably throughout my time knowing you. You have demonstrated true bravery to me over the course of our adventure."
"Rose. As hypocritical as it may be, I ask that you not place blame upon yourself for the misfortunes of others. Think of what you told me Selune represents. She is a guiding light in the darkness. The same darkness that comes every night, regardless of any one person’s actions. Darkness is guaranteed to come, and it is our duty to serve as a light that inspires and heals those lost in the shadows of misery."
Cirrus will respond to Rose by nodding and saying, "I promise."
You can't drown someone with Create Water. If your lungs are containers than your bones are objects. Any Siege monster that attacks you deals double damage because it’s attacking your bones.
Rose sat by Dots side, alongside her trusted companions. The three of them mourned in their own ways but Rose couldn't help but feel guilty about it all. Still, she knew she did the right thing by giving Burgee his dream. Rose turned away as Appa left ands imply sat there, sobbing quietly. Gwen, Ja, I'm sorry. This is all my fault. And I know I should have gotten your thoughts on bringing Dot back, but I just feel like she wouldn't accept that gift if offered. But perhaps it was wrong of me to make that decision alone. I'm sorry for all of this. Rose pet Yue and looked to the wolf, knowing she too felt the pain of loss. Both of her pack and then Paavu.
Rose's thoughts were cut short however by the arrival of a newly changed Brugee. Rose looked at him with astonishment. When he took flight, she felt almost as excited as me must of. After he spoke a smile finally made its awak across her face. Oh Burgee. I asked him to give you your dream. It was an extreme act of sacrifice you gave for my sake, but I couldn't let you lose your dream. But ill never forget that act of kindness. Few would have made the choice you did. Rose pulled Burgee into a tight hug and kissed him on the cheek. You best find someone you love and return your race to its former glory. I'm so happy for you Burgee.
Shortly after Cirrus came out and spoke his peace. Rose was sad to see the Genasi go but she understood his reason for being sent here must be complete. She accepted the gold with a promise to see that it got to him mother. She tried to hug him as well and said You will be missed here Cirrus but you are needed in your own universe. I thank you for your wise words, and you are right. I'll do my best to live by them. Please take care and stop blaming yourself for everything! Once the Genasi faded from this reality Rose felt her heart sink once more but she knew it was for the best.
Once Malman came out she listened to him and watched him summon Yue to his side. She was glad the wolf would be returning, though she wasn't sure what the nature of the gift would be. Still Rose smiled at the dwarf and said I know our time together was short but I've come to see you as a trusted friend. We will stay here, see to it that the dead are given their respects and proper burials. Go find the others and send them back, you and Burgee. I trust you both with this more than anyone else. We will figure out what we are doing after that though its likely our paths will be diverging for some time. If we ever see each other again, ill buy the drinks!
Once the rest had finally left, heading south the neverwinter, Rose, Gwen and Ja'ree would begin to collect the dead and put out the fires. The next few days would be spent digging graves, and performing burial rites. The hardest to perform was Dots. Beyond the fact that Rose wasn't familiar with Tortle funerals, it was especially hard to bury a friend. Still, for these next few days Rose performed all the duties expected of a priestess, and did her best to make sure all their souls found their way to Selûnes embrace. When it was all said and done Rose spent her little spare time with Gwen and Ja'ree, asking to see what the future held for them. Rose knew the call for adventure would hit them all eventually, Ja'ree looked already ready to move on, but Rose had hope Gwen would stick around a bit longer. When they had a moment alone, Rose approached Gwen and looked up at her with a soft smile on her face. I know I say this a lot, but I love you Gwen. When we first met, I was reluctant to fall for you. I knew Selûne would call me away from your side one day, and that it would break my heart. But I couldn't help it. And when the day came that I had to leave, I almost didn't. And when I did, I almost came back. But you found me again, and we've been through so much in such a little amount of time. And despite everything that happened, I'm not sure I would do anything differently. I'm glad I got to be by your side for it all, and I hope you'll stick around for more. I love you Gwyneth, I can't imagine continuing on without you. The world just doesn't have the same shine to it without you by my side. So, Rose gets down on one knee, making her even smaller to the much taller elf, Gwen, will you stay by my side now and forever? Will you marry me? Rose looked to the ground as she knelt, praying to Selûne a silent prayer as she awaited an answer.
After receiving Appa's blessing, and the transformation was complete, it took Burgee a short while to get used to his new form in any true sense. But after consulting with Rose, and the hour eventually passing, Malman, who had inevitably joined them before the hour had been up to say his own pieces to Rose and Company. Eventually, farewells were said, and both Burgee and Malman left to go collect whatever townsfolk remained. Burgee taking flight, both because he now could, and for the efficacy of an aerial view. He felt the wind rushing past his face in a way he never had before... With the spell, it helped deter winds and keep them from hindering the flight itself, much like a plastic bag holding someone aloft would be saved from it. However now, every buffet of the air, every rise and fall in the temperature could be felt.
It took him a good hour of flying to get truly used to before ancient instincts kicked in, like a long lost friend, who had been banished to the ends of the realm, finally returning in triumph. Burgee soared flipping and flitting, as he enjoyed every moment of this new experience, though his 'arms' did eventually begin to tire. However his joy through it all, melted the burning pain away and he pushed through it, both for himself, and the poor citizens of Phandalin.
Malman had rested enough before the groups departure to manage enough energy to transform several more times, but unlike Burgee, he chose a more grounded, but swift form so as to cover more ground visually, yet still be able to keep up with the elated Kenku. It took several hours, considering the significant head start the townsfolk already had, and the additional hour they had been given, but thanks to their mutual speed, the townsfolk were discovered not more than a days worth away. It seemed as though they hadn't stopped running the entire time, and when finally the pair had caught up to them, so too did the townsfolks exhaustion.
Seeking rest, now that they had no more reason to tense and run, they rested their weary legs, and mourned for their losses. A few hours into this, and Sildar Hallwinter came up the path on a horse, questioning the situation, in which one of the gathered informed him. He apologized profusely, promising to aid however he could as penance for his negligence.
After a day and-a-half rest, Malman would lead the weary townsfolk slowly back towards Phandalin, with Sildar in tow. And after dropping them off there, Malman quickly went on his way, feeling his soul being tugged elsewhere, though with Yue in tow, they both, together visited Paavu's grave, to say their true, final farewells, before Malman would begin his ritual.
Burgee, not wanting to get between Gwen and Rose, especially after that kiss that made his heart flutter, even though twas only on the cheek. Burgee continued on to Waterdeep, and on his way there, his staff grew heavy, forcing him to land. And upon inspection, the Glass-staff that had become his most treasured tool, had taken on an altered appearance. Though still crystalline, it now possessed the same markings as the staff that had been given to him by the old woman, carved into the glassy surface, and he felt power surging through the staff that he had never felt before. It seemed she still had a part to play in his life, as he hears her lessons, echoing in his mind, not to the point of insanity, but like a caring mother would to her child, passing down life lessons. And it was in that moment Burgee realized, he had lost part of his memories, as a torrent came flooding back. The old woman had truly been his mother, and he had suffered an accident that forced into him amnesia.
That staff, was the only thing she could give to him, besides her love, and her lessons, to the son that knew her only as the lady with the staff. And he felt loved. Perhaps she was still alive? perhaps.. he could tell her of his achievements, and his peoples salvation. Perhaps, once he was done here, in Waterdeep.... He would pay her a visit.
Malman had told Sildar that the Mine had been found, but that Gundrens fate was still unknown. And eventually, Malman returned to the Rockseeker home in Gauntylgrym to inform the close family. However, where he went after that, was a mystery of time, as he ha long since let Yue return to Rose's side.
Several years passed after Burgee met with his mother 'the old lady' and he spent some time with her, before she finally passed, giving him one last bit of wisdom: "restore our people, but don't settle...." and it took Burgee nearly a decade of travelling and exploring before he found the one, and his heart was able to get over Rose. Much like in his vision, his partner was sad that she too couldn't join in her family's flight, but Burgee made sure he kept his power on her, so that she would not be totally grounded, and she was happy, for him, for her people, and whatever sorrow she felt was outweighed by her joy.
It would take nearly thirty more years, but eventually Kenku that could fly became more common, until, after more time passed, Kenku being unable to fly was more a myth, and a warning to those who would repeat the mistakes that stripped his people of their wings.
Cirrus'
Cirrus said his farewells as quickly as he could, feeling that his time was short. And after a rushed, but heartfelt farewell to all, burgee would feel himself pulled backwards as he fell into eternity. His eyes blinked, and all was dark, and as his lids opened, he found himself in a tavern in Neverwinter, with Gundren, Sildar, and a pair of people he recognized... A pair of people who should be frozen over at this very moment, in a blizzard they had never seen coming. Everyone staring at the Genasi, who seemed to be lost in a stupor.
Gundren seemed to be offering the group a job, involving escorting some cargo to a town named Phandalin. This all seemed new to Cirrus, as if it had never happened before, but him and his fellows agree'd to join in on this journey, if only for some extra cash. Cirrus ultimately went to bed that night, but his sleep was anything but restful, and halfway through the night, he awoke, in a cold sweat. Rushing out to the cart that held all their possessions save for the shirts on their backs. And the little thieving thief who had stolen their cart that night... smiled at him. Appa?! That was.. you?! he said, a bit louder than he anticipated. Quiet, Planewalker. For we hath a merry chase to re-enact. Do not hasten it, for events must unfold close to how they did before. I must needs a headstart else all you know will be worthless. And I hath a bit of bait for thee... the staff of healing was visibly leaning in the cart, the one he'd received at Cragmaw. And in the druids hands, flashed a book... a thick, ancient, book whos title he only had a moment to read, before Appa stole away with their cart.... "The guide of the outer planes, by Elminster, the Mage"
Cirrus wanted to ask so much more but.. he had grown mature enough to know it was best to follow along, for now. However Cirrus also noticed, he still possessed all his strength he had gained from before, all his knowledge of events ... I'm coming for you.. Klarg.... Cirrus would say, with confidence, as he eventually alerted his 'new' friends that the cart had been stolen. Cirrus went on to use his knowledge of events to avoid almost every disastrous outcome that had previously befallen him and the town.... Peventing the Murder of the Alderleafs.... Protecting all the citizens, including a certain seamstress, who only found herself more enamored than she had been previously, getting to relive a .. certain night one more time, with twice the hands.
With Cirrus, his friends overcame the Redbrands easily, since Cirrus knew Glasstaff's true nature, and location. Knowing the location of the cragmaw castle, and where they'd be, the night the blizzard blew in, Finding Gwen, Ja'ree, and Dot where they had been before.. in the ame state, but with his staff... and his stealth... managing to turn the tide against the cragmaw with sheer numbers through healing them. Informing Gwen and co that Rose would be in Phandalin soon. The staff wasn't there in Thundertree this time, and Cirrus could guess why. Using his knowledge here, they avoided having to fight the dragon, and instead turned it on the 'drow.'
And leading them all to the mine, with a straight path, and a little less thunderous booming, overthrew the admittedly fragile "Spider." all with enough time to spare to return to Phandalin a day ahead of the orcs, rallying the town, returning the map to Gundren, and leading a successful defense, since they all had time to prepare... Where is Cirrus now? No one is quite sure, but rumors have spread that a blue genasi, who had saved Phandalin had been seen with a druid, a woman, and a pair of Tabaxi's, a book in hand, just before they all vanished....
((Thrown under the carriage))
Rose & Co
Rose, Ja'ree, and Gwen spent the next day or two burying folks in as proper graves as possible given the circumstances. it was a somber occasion, even if Rose didn't truly know any of them very well.. it was just her nature. Ja'ree and Gwen didn't seem too upset by what Rose had done, saying things like you're right, she was stubborn like that. and other similar comments, all meant in jest hoping Dot would be laughing along with them, wherever she was. Having said her farewells to the others as they had come and gone.
Eventually, the townsfolk returning with Malman, who left as quickly as he came to 'finish' something.
However, among all the sadness, and destruction that surrounded them, and fighting her own fears towards this commitment, Rose proposed to Gwen.... Initially, Gwen thought Rose was joking .. but.. R-Rose.. her cheeks aflush with crimson, as she looked around, the remains of tears unable to be held back from sadness at all the loss around her, began to flow. Gwen was a person who acted strong, but really wasn't. She was able to put up a good front, most of the time, but her eyes welled up uncontrollably once she realized that Rose wasn't just teasing her...I.... I mean... I love you too Rose... and never apologize... for how you feel... I... was.. hesitant too, if you couldn't tell when I first rejected your advances... I knew you'd eventually be torn from me and there was no... guaruntee we'd ever see eachother again.... she swallowed hard, as she leaned down, without kneeling, as she observed proper custom. And a moderate silence permeated between the pair.
I.... I'm sorry Rose... But I just can't...... I just.. can't say no... It seems you'll be stuck with me for a while longer... Gwen was smiling through her tears that flowed like a river as she collapsed to her knee's, pulling the Halfling into her arms and into a deep, loving, warm, and very huggingly-tight kiss. I'd take no other than you Rose.... For as long as Selune see's fit to grant it. I love you, mi hermosa flor de luna. And with that, Gwen accepted Rose's feelings, her love, and her heart in that moment as the lovers embraced, uncaring who all saw. Ja'Ree had turned away to hide his own waterworks, all while clapping and congratulating the pair.
I want to thank you all for joining me on this journey. It's been fun. I've enjoyed watching you all write your stories (most of the time... I kid i kid!) but yes. It also feels nice to officially finish a campaign, even as a DM as opposed to a player. Time constraints effected us all to some degree, but I'm glad that we have, what I feel is a mostly satisfactory ending. I'm sure you'll all go on to enjoy many more games, as well as meet meany more people, and characters. Creating more stories and worlds in this mutual-story known as DND. I realize I'm a more harsh DM than some, and I hope that this fact hasn't ruined anyone's fun. I'm glad Burgee finally got some resolution, and I hope he goes in to make many many flying-kaw-kaws. Cirrus will be busy saving his world before travelling to other worlds to learn more about the universe. I hope Rose and Gwen will live happily ever after and continue to thrive.
Phandalin will eventually revive in time, and the world will keep on turning, from one averted crisis to the next.
So once again, thank you all for this amazing experience, and may the dice, forever be in your favor! 20

Occassional Dungeon Master.

Occassional Dungeon Master.

And just before having walked off to speak with Rose, would say Your request, is one I cannot grant. For you hath not percieved that which lay before you.
Occassional Dungeon Master.

Occassional Dungeon Master.

"Malman, sorry if I seemed eager to [fantasy equivalent of "throw you under the bus"] when Appa came barging in demanding a staff, it seemed like a reasonable conclusion to jump to at the time, but now it is clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are far more trustworthy and noble-hearted than I gave you credit for."
"Ja'ree... we didn't really talk much, but you seem like a cool dude." *finger guns*
Burgee & Malman

DM Final Post.
