Interesting, I won't say no to a free potion but i additionally have feather fall as a back up. Could we have a small fact sheet on each plane when we enter it? or are we freely allowed / encouraged to pursue research online? ( I don't want to spoil any surprises)
You're free to look at any sources. I'm mainly basing my setting on the 3rd edition book "Manual of the Planes", with a little bit of Planescape-era stuff thrown in as I read back through old material. I'm not taking any quests directly from the source material, so you won't be spoiled. Just be aware that I'm not an expert on the planes so I'll probably make some things up in different ways than the official books say!
Additionally, I'm going to have the ship equipped with a Mimir, a magic item in the shape of a silvery floating skull that chants basic information it was programmed with when asked questions, mostly regarding the different planes and locations within them.
I would like to introduce Leuceus Drakos (though you can call him Luci (lu-sea)) first mate of the Void Skipper.
Always having the taste for adventure on the tip of his tongue and so set out as soon as he could to sail far and wide! ..****y to find out that any job he took was harder then he expected. instead of feeling free he only felt he could appreciate everywhere he was going while his shipmates slept. while watching the world from his secluded spot on one lucky day he made the vow to himself to do whatever he could to get to what he had always dreamed of; and so from then he played on his strengths, where he struggled with the hardships of cleaning and fixing sails he worked on what he could, people. Slowly working his way up the social ladder despite obstacles he faced he made his way up to his current position, overseeing what he can and filling out what he can mostly making sure everyone works together.
Leuceus Drakos -
An average Half Elf/Tiefling and the older brother of Aella
A swashbuckler rouge (3) and ranger (2)
he has a pair of ram horns curling around slightly pointed ears that poke out of his dark red hair, tied in small parts in places so it doesn't get in his eyes so he has full view of everything around him from his waist hangs his rapier, the handle showing signs of prolonged use from his battles and practice and if closely observed dagger hilts can be seen protruding his large leather boots. his tail is always left to swing out behind him, that (other than his horns and full black eyes) being the only parts showing his tiefling heritage as his skin remains fair as his mothers. His only recognizable clothing being his short cut blue jacket.
Overall he comes across to others as the one to go to if they wish to settle an argument or are having troubles where he can commonly be found enjoying himself and getting along how he can rarely accepting payment over favors.
Oh, that's a good question I didn't think about! Lets go with 3 to make things less unexpected, the ship can have a false gravity field (in addition to a magic force field that protects you from the worst of a plane's elements, like a bubble of air in the plane of water or a cool air bubble in the plane of fire). I reserve the right to change the way anything works if you go to particularly strange planes, though.
So, Wilhelm comes from the temple, and prior to joining the ship, had no real connections outside of the church. However, he is the chaplain, which includes taking everyone's confessions (if they so desire) and counseling them on pretty much everything. Basically, he doubles as the psychologist of the ship as well. So, think of him as a younger and slightly less intelligent shepherd Book from firefly, or maybe less annoying Deanna Troi from TNG.
As a result, if your characters wish, Wilhelm may be friendly with them, or know some of their deepest secrets.
Personally i think that the captain holds Wilhelm in very high esteem not only because she sees him as honourable and trustworthy man but he's also the only member of crew physically stronger than herself thus making him valuable asset. Perhaps they could have known each other on a prior ship such as the DawnBreaker. In which case they could know what really happened to that ship. I was thinking some eldritch horror or ancient god from the 4th/5th circle of limbo could have terrorised them and their crew something they share between them, and something they keep secret. I would also like to make him leader of a handful of crew. so you're in charge when Aella or her brother aren't around. this makes it easier to divide up the labour creates a chain of command and creates working circles so you get to know your co- workers easily. I was thinking he could be leader of Alphonse and Addison an directly report to Aella, you three can be the deck hand crew your jobs are with the sails the rigging, anchoring, cleaning the top deck and repairs at least while wee're sailing at high speeds or in high intensity situations otherwise you retain your responsibilities and roll as chaplain. ( if that's alright with you guys, subject to change)
As for Sweet James I thought it would be useful if his job doubled as a quartermaster since as a chef and cook he is already keeping track of the food and perishable supplies and could communicate with the logistics team headed by Breeze and Torveir as those three are suited to working below deck on navigating mapping routes and arguing over directions. They would report to my brother.
This sn't to say that the crew is static and the two can never interact with one another or people can't change roles or positions, I just thought it would be interesting to create teams so that characters can work more fluidly together all is subject to change so tell me what you think.
I’ll be honest. Not super interested in setting up a command system before the game starts - cause I’m not sure of the introduction that we will be getting.
Backstory wise - I’m intrigued by a few. But open to letting things kind of play out over the game too.
I suppose a last question for the DM while I’m tweaking things. How are you on home brew feats / spells / etc?
I'm kind of of the opinion that if we don't establish a chain of command now, we will do so eventually, so we may as well do it now. I kind of like Wyldas' suggestion, although I would like to point out that if we went with it, it would be putting the Chaplain in charge of the smuggler and the gun-nut. Which I don't think is a problem, I just thought it was kind of funny.
Also, as for shared backstory, I'm open to doing so, if anyone's interested.
Haha good point, you two better behave! let's see how it turns out in role play part of the reason i suggested it was to make rp easier considering we have 8 crew members but it may not be necessary.

Personally, I won't be doing any research, but that's more of a character choice.

Sounds fun; add him to the campaign, and I'm thinking we'll start Saturday afternoon.
There’s a trinket item from Ebberon that’s basically a coin with feather fall on it. If you fall off, it’s your parachute sort of thing.
But it all sounds good to me!

Ah, that works better than a potion probably; I'll go with that.
:)

Anyone want to have a bit of shared backstory with Sweet James?
Yes, I encourage people working out connections in their backstories if they wish.

Sorry I was Dming at a convention all weekend so not much time to respond. I don't believe Addison would have a shared backstory.
Hey sweet what is that lemur creature is it your pet?
What lemur creature?
Hey MacLeod0, looks like you didn't see that there's a new thread for the game; my bad, should have posted that here. Here's the link:
