"Corum, which trail seems to lead away from our settlement, or at least travel up the stream?" Ulrich will ask as he is washing his hands in the stream, turning to Navi, "Well that was a bit of nasty work, and let me know if you want me to carry the head or if you are OK with it, I am by no means the strongest of the group but I can carry a bit more without any problems."
Corum calls out to the group There are a couple options guys, Do we want to go down the largest path, or the one that looks used the most. I personally think if we are going to decrease the amount of attacks we might want to track the biggest trail and see if that is the Alpha Predator's trail.
"I agree with Corum. I feel the more popular one could have driven the animal we're looking for away, because it was the more obvious path to follow. That could mean its prey may have lessened due to humans or other predators. If I were the animal, I'd want to go somewhere undisturbed so I could eat as many creatures as I wanted -- without fear of them possibly having prior knowledge of what they should do if a predator came. I'll try to see how old these tracks are." Georges knelt down to inspect.
Navi would wipe the creatures fluids from her axe on her pant leg before putting it away. "Aye, a true gentleman!" She'd smirk when Ulrich would offer to carry the head. She'd pull out some of her rope, thread it through orifices in the skull, and begin strapping it to him. "I'll get the next one." Navi would give him a pat on the back before heading over to where Georges is squatting. "Sounds like a plan to me.Any luck?"
( Nature to see if she can be any help to Georges: 20 )
Once they were done inspecting the tracks and ready to move on, Navi would lead the way down the path.
"I regret attempting to sound like I was a professional at anything nature-related." He said quietly to Navi, continuing to peer at the dirt with the gaze of a sage. "I've been down here for what feels like forever and the only thing I'm seeing are worms in the dirt- and I'm not even sure if those are actual worms." Georges couldn't resist giving a sheepish grin as he turned to face her. "Thanks for coming over."
Once the tracks ages were found, he followed everyone as they went down the path, whistling cheerily on the way.
There are a lot of tracks here, as the wet earth retains them well. All of paths show they have been used since the last heavy rain (which unfortunately you do not know when that occurred, so they were made at least in the last 48 hours). The track leading northwest is the most recently used of the two. Though the most recent would be to the south-south east, back towards the city, but they are the tracks of small creatures.
For the next hour, until late-morning, you follow the main winding path for a about a mile. Game trails branch off and on, but there is no sign of the creature.
As you travel the mist finally lets up (Misty Beresmar.Sometimes I'm amazed that the entire island doesn't rust shut), and the sun comes out of the clouds. Here and there, light filters down to the forest floor, illuminating patches of ferns. Though you hear birds, and scurrying small animals you see nothing. As you journey inland, the ground continues to rise.
Navi would nod to Georges, "Honestly, I'm surprising myself with this nature stuff. Don't give me too much credit." She'd give him a pat on the shoulder. "I'm trained teh be perceptive, but I wasn't able teh see a creature right in front of my face." She'd chuckle thinking about it, "If it wasn't fer you boys lighting it up, I could 'ave been lunch." Navi would shrug.
Ulrich chimes in, "I have traveled far and wide before a swell, but I mainly have stayed close to civilization as much as possible. I am kind of lost when it comes to traveling through the forest. I thank you for your help in pointing out what I have so obviously am missing."
"Well, thank you both." Georges said to Ulrich and Navi, flattered. "But, in other news, I think we're going to have to change our path up a bit." He stopped and pointed to the straightened path to the left. "That hill seems to have a path made. It's just a theory, but I believe something has been using that hill often. Could it be related to whatever those explorers came across?"
Leaving the trail, you begin to climb the hill (elevation +30 ft.). As you near the top, the hillside becomes littered with head sized rocks of various shapes, half-buried by untold years. Reaching the crest, you realize the "ridge" is actually the first two layers of an ancient tower. The mortar which once held the stones together is long since gone, and the shape is held together by vines. The walls of the tower are the stones which cover the hillside and the inside of the tower (30 ft. diameter) is mostly filled with stones.
Corum is instantly curious about this tower. Hey I know we are kind of trying to hunt a monster, but shouldn't we take a second to investigate this tower? I mean think of how it must have been since anyone stepped where we are stepping? He then just starts looking around trying to notice anything, not investigating until the rest of the party decides to.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"True we are on the hunt for the alpha carnivore in the area, but we are here to explore the island itself first, so by all means, lets go take a look at this tower." As Ulrich will stat to move about the top of the tower looking for an entrance.
Investigation?: 17
[OOC: I will attempt to cast [spell]Prestidigitation[\spell] on the "top" of the tower to see if there is a way in, if possible]
Ulrich: Not sure I understand what you are trying to accomplish or that Prestidigitation can be used in the way I think you want to use it. The only thing left of the tower intact is the foundation and first 2 courses of stones, and they are held together by plants and not mortar.
The tower had once been constructed of stone held together by mortar, and not the tight block structure of Hested, and probably fell apart centuries ago. Some stones falling inward into piles and others falling outward to roll down hill.
The only interesting feature is a deep hole or tunnel, half hidden by rock and vines, leading down into the hill below. The opening is only about 2.5 ft. in diameter at its widest and leads almost straight down. The air above the opening is acrid.
Bren follows the rest, slightly confused by the whole situation. "This tower... if I'm remembering correctly, it's nothing like the architecture we've seen on this island so far. Nothing around the abandoned city looks quite like this. I wonder, does it suggest that there was more than one group of people here? If so, what happened to them?"
