"Master, think on this: I have spent this past hour seeking your advice. The first thing you told me was that you could no longer hear peoples thoughts. Did that make your advice less useful?"
"We each dread failing to do what has been asked of us. We can give up, or we can each seek means to assure this does not happen, to the best of our ability. If you stay, this will be your task, to seek those means. Many of my questions today were about seeking the means to achieve the things that I want to achieve."
"If you wish to stay here, then perhaps there may be a solution: it may seem abhorrent, but perhaps a magical device could be constructed that can give you a small part of the power you once had -- enough to guard the school, but not so much as to be unmanageable given your extensive experience? You don't need to hear the intimate details of passers-by, merely the thoughts of those seeking entry, for a few moments."
"In the past your abilities caused you great distress, no? What if, in that distress -- perhaps as a result of some errant thought from a passer-by -- you were so disturbed as to let someone into the school? What would have happened? Most likely they would have been dealt with by any one of the students. If they were more powerful, do you not think that perhaps they could have deceived even you?"
"My teachers have always taught me that the only things that last are those that are built upon layers of strength: city defences, battle plans, diplomatic negotiations, and even just a well-forged sword. A brittle defence is one that relies too heavily on but a single layer. The school will not stand or fall based on a single failure by you; you are part of something larger and your role is far larger than simple guardian. If the archmagus is sympathetic, then perhaps ask his help in seeking means of continuing to do the jobs you have done so well all these years."
Brand looks to assess Minton's reaction then continues, "But I see that there is more here...I do not know who she is, but based on the only woman who I have known well enough to call friend -- Melitta -- I would certainly hesitate to tell her what is good for her! I assume this she is a sorceror. You of all people must appreciate that they live in a different world to the rest of us. You should be concerned about what you want for you and what you expect of you, not what you expect of others, nor what they expect of you."
"Now must be a very difficult time for anyone who knows you well -- including yourself -- but I am not sure it's the right time to leave behind those friends you still have who support you. At least not permanently. I fled to Ilbarsis and many very good and many very bad things happened, and it gave me a perspective that I could never have achieved by staying here, so the choice is one I stand by. In my case I did not have the kinds of friends that I think you probably have here: What do your friends say? What does the archmage suggest?"

"But she is no mere sorcerer, Alaric," says Minton. "She is a goddess, and my concerns are of little importance when it comes to her return and what she might be able to do for us all."

Brand laughs, "I'm sorry Minton, but that only reinforces what I have been saying: one --- remember that there are strong reasons for you to stay, quite apart from her presence. And two -- if I would hesitate to presume to tell a female sorcerer what to do -- or even perhaps, expect to fully comprehend their actions -- that same argument surely must apply for a goddess!"
Always a little uneasy in the presence of religious fervor, Brand searches Minton's face for signs that he might be getting through, and tries to reinforce his point. "One thing I think is certain, and I think you would agree: it would be dangerous and even foolhardy to try to tell a god what to do."

Of course, if you need a break, that would be completely understandable...the question then is: would you take a break among friends, or travelling back to New Nineveh which you have not seen in many years?"

[[Minton is clearly conflicted in his loyalties and feeling pretty useless at the moment. He is also very unsure what he should do. The Persuasion check was to see if Brand's words are getting through. The 'at disadvantage' was my decision based on my understanding of the situation. The result is that Brand has failed to get through to Minton, who has lost it now that he has had someone to talk to about his situation, he was putting on a brave face before. Brand has had experience points added to this character sheet and is at something of a loss as to what to do at this point.]]

[[Does my XP roll mean I gained any insight for next time?]]
[[Not really. That roll is not for giving information, it's a mechanism to represent the character learning about themselves and their limitations. The idea is actually based on a teaching pedagogy that supports the idea that students become more critical about their own learning process, and thereby improve that process, by being allowed to fail and try again. But I don't want to model some sort of iterative process, which is what the real thing is, just provide another way of developing a character than just the succeeding at encounters as the rules specify.]]

Making his way through the rain further into the School grounds, Brand reaches the administration building where he knows the archmagus' office is.
He climbs the shallow steps and after shaking off some of the rain from his sodden cloak he enters into the foyer, where he sees a group of about half a dozen people talking casually together.
One of them he recognises immediately from past visits to the School, though they have never actually been introduced, this is the archmagus Cyrus Black himself. Three of the others are dressed in the distinctive robes that mark them as functionaries of the king. But the other two are different: one man, one woman, both tall with pale skin and reddish hair. Brand believes they are Gundians.
Then a Sorian woman Brand does not recognise, emerges from a side door and heads toward him. "Master Brand," she says, taking him by the elbow and steering him through the door she emerged from, "can I be of assistance?"

"Indeed, you must be Haneena? I was told you might be able to answer some questions about a friend of mine -- Melitta -- and perhaps help me leave a message for her, should she return. Also, I was hoping you might also know of another friend, who often travelled with her, who goes by the name Dworkin, though I am not sure he has visited here at all?"
"Melitta Talorun," says the woman tersely as she closes the door to what Brand realises is a cloakroom, "yes I know her. Dworkin? I've heard the name, never met the man though. Why do you ask?"
Then, before Brand gets a chance to respond, she adds, "And hand me that cloak, it's soaking wet."

I gather she visited the school recently, but I was not in Constantine at the time. I was hoping you might have news of her whereabouts and may have means to deliver her a message."
Handling the wet cloak so as to avoid getting her own clothes wet, the woman carefully places it on a hook near a small stove to dry out.
As she does so, she comments, "This is a nice cloak, I like the fact it is reversible; it must be quite expensive."
Then she turns to Brand and says, "Yes, I am indeed Haneena Salid, and I remember now that we haven't actually been properly introduced."
She extends a hand for a handshake while continuing to speak. "But to answer your question, I heard that Taloran had been at the School, but I didn't get to see her, and I don't know her whereabouts; the archmagus and I have been quite busy as of late, what with the death of the warlord and the king's recent declaration that all non-Mithran religions be declared anathema within the bounds of the city."

Was there something that prompted it?"
"Yes," says Haneena, whose handshake is a little damp and tentative. "The death of the warlord occurred under suspicious circumstances, and the more recent death of Seeker Harlan had the temple hounding the king like... well... like hounds. What with him being ill, it was only a matter of time, and he agreed to their demands just this afternoon. The temple will no doubt be organising themselves at this very moment."
Then, without pause, she adds, "And to address your first question, I have established a message board in the eating hall where people can leave messages for each other, it seems to be popular. However, if it is something other than a simple message, you can leave it with me and put a message on the board asking for them to collect it from the administration building."

"I think the latter might be most convenient, to preserve a level of privacy." He opens his satchel and pulls out the hastily drawn note, offering it to Haneena. "Would it be possible to give this to Melitta should she return? Also...and I know this is a lot to ask, but if she does return would you be able to send a quick messenger to my city residence and the estate? I will of course pay." he says, as he takes out the coins he offerred Minton.
"Actually," she says, taking the coins, "I will be leaving the note and the coins with the School secretary. That way Melitta is more likely to get the message in a timely manner, should she come visiting again. I can sometimes be hard to find some times, especially when I accompany the archmagus on his various errands. You're actually lucky to have caught me as we were at the palace for most of the day."
