[[ Just so we are on the same page. I think Brand would have mentioned the peasant's nest, this is how the convo went, I think: ]]
Minton thinks for a moment and then says, "Employment would be good in the longer term, but for the moment, I think seeing the home country would do me some good. Thanks for the offer though."
Minton comes across and hands Brand his cup and then clears a space at the table so they can both sit. "Do you have anywhere in particular you might like to go for lunch?"
Brand considers for a moment, then says "I was thinking of the Pheasant's Nest. I may not be dressed quite for it, but they know me at least."
"But before we go, I did want to ask: Does the school know that it is being watched by the temple? I saw you talking to the guards yesterday...and there are new ones here today. It seems quite unusual."
"Yes," Minton replies. "They know. The Temple of Aieda have had a presence there ever since I told them of the appearance of the avatar of Aieda, and their presence has been impossible to miss since the accusations of Arion worship have been levelled against the Archmagus's brother."
[[ At which point I think he would say: ]]
Having just told Brand that the school apparently knows that they are under observation by the Temple, Minton is then silent for a moment before saying, "You saw me talking to the guards? Yesterday? How?"
Brand leans back, looking squarely at Minton, his brow furrowed.
"After I left the school, it was raining heavily and Eddard let me out. I had glimpsed what I took to be ne'er-do-wells lurking in an alley on my way in that morning, and they were still there when I left. After all the tales I had heard of mishaps at the school, I felt it my duty to investigate."
"Fearing a plot against the School, I took a closer look. I was at first relieved when I saw you, then worried --- you seemed to be arguing, and I feared for your life -- but getting closer, I realized they were Temple Guards, and so I was less concerned."
"There were more guards this morning, who seemed quite tight-lipped about their work. Is there a larger problem that I can help with?"
"There is no problem," says Minton, deliberately turning his face away. "The Temple and the School have never had a good relationship and I have always been caught in the middle of it."
Then, after a moment, Minton adds, "That is why I have made the decision to leave. Start a new life without being responsible to anyone."
"Shall we go now?" he then says, "This Pheasant's Nest sounds like an interesting place, and it has been a long time since I have dined in the company of others."

A look of sadness crosses Brand's face when Minton turns away, but he quickly covers it up with a smile.
In answer to Minton's question, Brand stands, "Of course! I am honoured that you chose to break your long fast with me."
He gathers his satchel, then pauses, frowning again. "But...before we leave...just one more question if I may: the hand leader from yesterday...I am sure I've seen him somewhere before; it's been bothering me all day. Do you happen to know his name by any chance. I wish I could recall where I saw him."

"I wish my memory were better."
Brand sights, "Oh well, time for lunch."
As they head for the door, Brand remarks, "I hope the guards don't think you are gossiping!"
Minton tells Brand that he doesn't know the family name of the hand leader from yesterday, but that he seems to remember one of the other guards referring to him as Arthur. He then gathers up his coin purse and the two of them head outside to the gate where Minton tells Bruxa to be good and that he will be back soon. Seb then lets them out through the gate after wishing them a pleasant lunch.
As they head in the direction of the bridge that will take them across to the Mercantile District, they pass the alleyway in which the hand of Oannes Temple guards are waiting. Minton raises a hand in acknowledgement of Hand Leader Blume's gaze and then chuckles.
"This should cause some scratching of heads in the Temple tonight," he says.
Then he asks, "So, what can you recommend for lunch?"

Brand chuckles at Minton's comment about the temple.
"If you like pheasant, then I heartily recommend their banquet. It seem to always be on the menu. We could have that if you like? It usually starts with pheasant eggs, perhaps in a salad, or curried, or poached...whatever the chef chooses, then something light followed by the main event: their poached pheasant. The sauce accents the game flavour beautifully. Desert is usually something light again, but made with pheasant eggs of course."
Brand pauses a moment, "Or perhaps you would prefer something simpler: their venison is excellent. But I would recommend the banquet, if you have the time."
"Besides, my father would be upset if I provide a meal for you that did not show our wines to the best advantage."
"I'm happy to try the speciality of the house," says Minton as they make their way towards the bridge. "And I'm eager to try some of your family's wine, though I won't drink much. It's too early in the day for me."
As they cross the bridge, Brand notes that the day is still overcast and that the easterly wind has a bit of a bite to it, which is unseasonable for late summer.
They reach the Pheasant's Nest and are lucky enough to get the last available table.

[[ Not sure what is best; I don't think I want to do 2-3 hours of mixed smalltalk and business with Minton, but I did have some things I wanted to raise. Would a series of vignettes be best, doing the whole thing, or just some broad ideas. For reference, this is what I wanted in no particular order, but I did not want it to be in inquisition either, I think Brand would want Minton to enjoy himself above all else.:
Conversation about Minton's plans, life, hopes etc. Light stuff, relaxing. - this would probably lead to Brand suggesting, perhaps, Minton might be eyes and ears for Koric down south. Koric may even be willing to provide an escort or a boat, but Brand would have to check...
Insights into the politics of the School and Temple (either or both, but factions at school (if any));
Any suggestions on how Brand might continue to have access to the school? Koric becoming patron would help, but any other way?
Discussion of current purge in town. Does Minton know what's driving it? "It's terrible seeing all the people leaving"
Rhani (this is one he would press on, at least to some extent): "She's impressive, but what's she doing here?", "...and isn't her assistant an alumni of the School?", " What do you think of her?" etc
Specific questions: - Why would a patron be valuable to Hanena? Isn't the school already well endowed? - Why the tensions between School and Temple? - Insights into what happened with the abduction at the school
I'm sure that such threads would lead to even more interesting things...
Once they are seated, Brand sighs. "I still can't believe you are going. But, I do understand your reasons -- I've done my share of escaping impossible situations."

Minton tells Brand a little about his family's home, which it a little village by the sea. He clearly has fond memories of it, but expects it has changed a lot since he was last there.
When Brand asks about attending Temple and Glory Rahni, Minton says, "I haven't attended Temple for years. Perhaps when we have finished lunch, I will make my way to the Temple Ward and light a candle from the eternal flame. Perhaps I will get to see the Glory, if I am lucky."

"I can see why you would like to leave. You must feel like you have a new lease on life."
"So, what will you do in New Ninevah?"
[[ I am happy if the conversation drifts to a broad discussion here. I think I already know he plans to write and visit family...anything else?
If he mentions writing, say that he can put me down for a signed copy of the wamzut biography.
Who else is he writing about? ]]
[[ After a while....]]
"It must be good for you to be able to attend temple again. Have you heard much about the visiting Glory....Rhani is it? I hear one of her people is a graduate of the school."

"So....how did they find out about the recent avatar? I had assumed you went to temple."
"No," he said. "I didn't need to. I was on my way to the temple when I met a Seeker of the Temple of Donai; just right outside the School actually. I told him everything and he asked me to go back and act as the Temple's eyes and ears in the School."

"Fascinating! I had no idea. Did the
hand leaderseeker already know?""No," says Minton. "He did not know anything about the appearance of the avatar. He was investigating the death of a fellow Seeker and following up on the report of an alfaren being in the area. He knew it was strange for me to leave the School, so he approached me to find out what was going on—I told him everything."
