Brand awaits his return and has a gulp of water, and a sip of the refilled wine.
It seems Brand was wrong, they aren't leaving; the young woman gets to her feet alone and heads towards the back of the tavern where Hareld went. As she passes Brand's table, and with her back to her table partner, she gives Brand a smile and an obvious wink.

Brand watches the woman walking towards the back of the tavern and see her meet Hareld coming the other way. The two nod to each other and Hareld continues on heading back to the table.
Brand turns to look back at the woman's table to find her companion staring at him. The man scowls and says loudly enough for some of the other patrons of the tavern to hear, "She's mine for the rest of the day. So keep your eyes off her, you young buck."
There is a moment's hush and then a murmur of disapproval, which suddenly stops under the glare of the man.
Minton takes his seat looking a bit worried. "Is there going to be trouble?" he asks.

[[Yes, we watched the first season and I agree its good, but did you see the Amazon Prime adaptation of The Man in the High Castle? Rufus Sewell won a best supporting actor gong for his roll as John Smith and my first reaction was: who was he supporting? As far as I was concerned, he stole the show.
[[ Does Brand know if it's true in NN?]]
[[There are secular colleges of magic in New Nineveh, but the Temple is the main source for all education throughout the Sorendenese Empire.]]
"I would have thought it a good means for the temple to get converts, by offering scholarships. How does it work down south?"
[[The above is stuff Brand should already know, so I have answered out of character below.
Brand would know that most education in the Sorendenese Empire is provided by the priests of local Mithran Temples. Sorendenese children attend Temple School for free and can only leave when they know the basic tenets of the Mithran faith, can read and write the Sorendenese cuneiform-like script and do basic arithmetic. Attendance after that is not mandatory, and is provided by the Temple on a pay-as-you-go basis. In the Empire, testing for innate sorcery is also done by the Temple as part of the education process and those innate sorcerers discovered in this process can also gain training in magick for free through the Temple in areas where suitable trainers are available (otherwise, they are taken on as boarders in the nearest suitable Temple such training is available). As a result of this, many of those innate sorcerers trained by the Temple end up becoming part of the priesthood.
In Engle, things are different. For a long time, the Temple has been trying to catch up with the rapid colonisation that has occurred in the kingdom and it is only in Constantine where anything approaching the normal for the rest of the Empire occurs. There are both Temple-run and Crown-funded schools for the Sorendenese in Engle (Many of the Crown-funded schools have teachers who are School of Occult Studies alumni paying off their King's Patronage) and there is little formal education of the Stemian native population at all. With regard to testing for innate sorcerers, this is done in both Temple and secular schools for their attendees, but little is formally done for the remainder of the Stemian population. This is not as dangerous as it sounds because it seems that the Stemian race is not normally as magically gifted as the Sorian race and the incidence of innate sorcerers is less in the Stemian population.
Because of the Brand Estate's distance from Constantine, Brand was probably home schooled by his mother in the knowledge-based skills or literacy and numeracy with occasional visits from Temple educators to check on his progress. These visiting educators would have also tested him for innate sorcery.]]
