"I certainly can" replies Daveak happily, standing up and motioning for Tallanvor to follow him. As they arrive at the Gundren's table at the same time as . Gundren has just passed the three elves envelopes similar to those he gave the rest of the table earlier, containing 2GP and the instruction to meet him at 2am in the stable. "My, my Daveak. this is quite the group you have assembled for me. And another two recruits? You haven't been hired to ruin me by my business rivals, have you?" he asks jokingly.
"Of course not Gundren I would never break our contract, I strongly suspect SIldar would have something to say about it if I did. You asked for my help in recruiting suitable people for your journey and I believe I have delivered. This is Tallanvor, a traveller from the lands of Illian beyond the sea, who wishes to experience more of this land." Turning to the newly arrived goblin, he adds "Greetings Goblin-kin. I hope that the paths that bear you here have been bountiful."
Daveak goes to join Sildar leaning by the wall, his task obviously at an end. Gundren reaches into his pouch and draws out another 4GP which he splits and slides over to where Tallanvor and Roars in SIlence are sititng. "So happy to have you both with me for this. Unfortunately you find me under-prepared for so many of you, I have run out of envelopes. I am sure one of our companions can let you of the trivial details inside." Gundren leans back pleased at the group that has assembled before him.
Yay, I got the party together :D
Twiglet, whether the elves get along is completely up to their players.
Roars in Silence looks up at Daveak and gives him a cheery wave. She pauses with her hand still raised and frowns, her eyes briefly sweeping back and forth across the ceiling as she spends a few seconds reviewing old memories. Then her eyes flick over to Branca, then to her beer, and then back to Daveak. As an answer to his question, she flashes another smile and changes the interrupted wave to a thumbs up.
The little halfling is clearly overawed by the company of heroes around the table. He can't, yet, tell who may be an ally or a foe and is keeping quiet to better observe. The arrival of a mad goblin who seems intent on joining them seems very strange and Twiglet can't figure out why no one has attacked it yet....isn't that what monster hunters DO?
What is this ?!!! XiaoLong observes the new arrival, that ugly, vile creature that nobody seems concerned with, although... she noticed the reaction and body language of the little one and approaches him, lowering her head and murmures to his ears.
"Twiglet, have you ever seen such a creature ? What do you make of it ? A domesticated version of what looks like a Goblin ? Could it have been cursed and transformed, forced to take this shape for the rest of its existence ?"
XiaoLong although wary of the Halfling, feels re-assured somehow that someone finds this creature at odd in the current environment. Aren't goblins supposed to live in caves ?
Noticing the worried exchanges between his fellow adventurers Tallanvor bellows a hearty laugh
"Worry not for the appearance of our goblin friend, seems friendly enough, though short on words. There do be creatures in my land with legs the size o yer torso and the face of a bull. A fearsome sight most take 'em fer shadowspawn out the blight. The do be kinder than yer grey haired grand momma. Less you cross them, I s'pose..." He tapers off. Best not to share the story when he saw a man cut clean in half with one sweep of that mighty axe for chopping down their sacred grove. "Remains to be seen, but my guess is we have a fine companion of the goblin". He touches his hand to his forehead and then faces the palm towards the goblin in a gesture of greeting.
Roars in Silence tilts her head as Tallanvor completes the gesture, and her smile is quickly replaced with a quizzical expression. Her hands fly through a series of complicated gestures that seem to be directed at the white-haired man.
With one hand she points to one of her ears . With the other hand she points to Tallanvor and makes a 'talking' motion. Her smile returns and she nods. Then she points to herself and makes the same motion but shakes her head sadly. She pauses and tilts her head back, revealing a massive scar that runs across her throat. It's obviously old and has healed over now, but it clearly had been a grave wound at some point.
The Goblin can't talk and that looks like a Dockers Smile on her throat. Twiglet knows that sort of punishment. Lucky Jim quickly had to change his name when that happened to him after the Spice-Merchant's Guild job went bad. He was re-named Whispering Jim, as he could still make some noises from the ruin of his throat.
"People get cut like that here if they rat on their gang-mates" he says quietly to the strange foreign woman next to him. "It stops them ever speaking again"
Twiglet is caught up in the conversation and turns to the Goblin. Being voiceless seems to override its strangeness. "Here, we can still talk in Cant, after the cut....though its hard to sing a song...Can you Cant?" asked Twiglet, making the sign for welcome/truce at the same time
Jumpy halfling has questions now. He look like he don't know yet if we going to fight right here on the table or leg it out back door. He has good words with his hands but the words in mouth are out of place, like he trying to speak the hand signs out loud. The gang from day before had these words too, but only for each other. Strange words to share between nasties but plain words for the inkeeper. No words for I. Maybe this one has the knowing of how to speak with hands. Or maybe the knowing of the gang.
Roars in Silence tries sign language again, this time directing it towards Twiglet, and this time somewhat slower.
[Twiglet, or anyone else in the party who can understand sign language]:
I welcome you and you welcome me so maybe we no have to play with knives here in tavern. I am One Who Roars in Silence, but I no be roaring at you. You have seen a hurt like this one before, yes? When slavers come to our land once they try make me an example, but goblins is wriggly creatures so I escape before I run out of neck. Then I come back at night and made sure return the favor. Fat and drunk slavers are not so wriggly, so they run out of neck. Fat and drunk men in the alley gang from the day before not so wriggly either, and they no see at night worth a damn. They have strange words like yours though. Why are you having the strange words like them?
Frustrated and unsure what to do, Roars in Silence drains the rest of her beer and flags down Branca to ask for another. It looks like this conversation is probably not going to result in her having to fight her way out of the bar so...may as well make the most the most of the opportunity to have a drink with a roof over her head.
The goblin seems to be able to communicate with Branca...at least well enough to order a beer. Twiglet watches closely and when the flagon arrives, Twiglet tries to use what looked like a likely sign for beer and the Cant for "good/safe" with a hesitant smile...after all, the goblin is the only other person at the table anywhere near Twiglets height, even the dwarves stand a head taller than him

Twiglet begins to realise that while the Goblin obviously can't speak the Cant, some of the signs she is using are familiar from it. By focusing he begins to pick up the basics of what she is trying to say.
Branca sets the glass down, and Roars in Silence looks back and forth between Twiglet's nervous expression and the beer that he's waving his hands over. There's an uncomfortably long pause, and then she completely fails her will save and bursts out laughing. Well, that or a coughing fit - they sort of sound the same if you don't have any vocal cords. Something about the situation just struck a nerve and so for a little while she Laughed in Silence instead. Branca sees Twiglet's confused expression and waves a hand at him in a placating gesture.
"Don't worry about it boy - I'm mostly sure that means she likes you. She doesn't usually laugh at people when she's about to stab 'em, least as far as I've seen."
Spotting Roars in Silence's hands moving she continues: "She's saying 'oh, the look on you face,' more or less. And now she says 'I like you. I don't know if I'd trust you to watch my back in a melee if we're fighting anything tougher than a rabbit, but you clink when you walk so either you know what you're doing or you're hoping carrying all of them daggers will make us think that you do.' Only her Common is a lot more broken than mine, even in hand sign"
"Since you're already enjoying being the center of attention so much, I've got something for you to take a look at. Earlier this evening, some wannabe thugs shook down some of my lads for protection money. They paid them off, but I was planning to have a word with the gang masters tomorrow about keeping their folk breaking our little agreement. Anyway, this goblin here was in drinking, but disappeared. She come in and hands me this package" She hands over a small bundle of rags and string. Opening the parcel, Twiglet finds several fingers, one of which has a ring. "One of the lads was wearing that. You ever seen those rings before?"
"I certainly can" replies Daveak happily, standing up and motioning for Tallanvor to follow him. As they arrive at the Gundren's table at the same time as .
