The contract seems to suggest that any items found in the excavation will be split equally between all parties.
"We intend to share out what we find down there. But if we can get the forge working again, that's the family set for life." Gundren adds.
"Now, you'd all better get some sleep! We set out early for Phandalin. Rooms and board have been provided for all of you here in the Inn, so enjoy civilisation while you can!"
Nicola isn't as swayed by the allure of treasure or adventure, but the thought of possibly coming into enough wealth to maybe get settled in a new place, a new life, is exciting. Life on the road with trading caravans has been difficult. Despite only being in her mid-30s, to Nicola everyone here seems so young, and it inspires a den mother instinct.
"Thank you, Mr. Rockseeker, for your generosity and forthrightness," she says. "I'm in. As long as we look out for one another, we should be able to make it through. I can lend what grace I have been given to keep the party safe."
Elizabeth signed her contract. She knew she could only steal so much, and this would at least allow her to gain significant wealth, maybe even enough that she would no longer have to live on the streets. "Wait... we get to stay in the rooms?" She asks. Her tone is mostly neutral, but there is a hint of excitement, as though she had never stayed in an inn before.
"Yep Elizabeth, we've got some generous employers today." Nicola winks at Gundren. She actually shares the same excitement as the halfling urchin. The inn is nicer than the lodgings she's been accustomed to for some time. "Think I'll go take advantage of it myself. I smelled something tasty in the common room downstairs. Any of y'all feel free to join me!"
Irena blinks in surprise as if the idea of formal contracts is strange to her but she signs anyway. "A meal would be welcome right about now." She agreed.
Debolsia gives the contract a read and then signs with excitement. This would be her first hired job as an anthropologist and she wanted to make sure she did it properly! Her will be so proud of her if the mission is a success. It will make all these years of practice and training worth it.
She nods as Nicola mentions food. "Wait for me. I'm starving! We can all probably use a proper meal before we leave. You never know what types of food you'll find out in the wilds. Eat the wrong thing and your stomach will try to expel it for weeks." She grabs her bag and says, "Looking forward to working with you all. I think this will be a great expedition."She smiles and then heads with Nicola to get some food.
"I've been helping out with trading caravans up and down the Coast for the past couple years," Nicola says. "Providing healing and logistical support mostly for living expenses and a little extra, if I'm lucky, which honestly I haven't been."
Nicola pauses as some food arrives, she takes some fried potatoes and greens before continuing her story.
"I get sidetracked here and there, helping people out as I can. There was one time, just a few months ago in fact, we stopped in a little fishing village and I came across a young child with a nasty leg wound. I spent our break in town getting him patched up and connected up with the local sawbones, running around here and there, and wouldn't you know it, the caravan leaves without me!" She shakes her head. "I was stuck there for a week with barely half a silver to my name before I caught another job. It's only thanks to the hospitality of nearby church -- I believe it was a little chapel to Tyr, actually," She nods to Vinras, a thank you to his order. "a few miles inland -- that I even had a roof over my head!"
"There are good people in the world, but some of these merchants can be heartless, they'll take any opportunity to screw you over for an extra copper in their pouches. I'm not saying this is our current employer by any means, but we've got to look out for each other on the road. But enough of me, how about yourselves? What brings you to Neverwinter?"
Elizabeth practically inhaled her food, as though she was afraid it would be taken from her. Pausing her meal when Nicola starts asking questions, she finishes chewing before speaking. " I've.... never been outside of Neverwinter. What's it like?"
Orders his foods and begins to eat with the utmost manners when his food arrives, he looks to Debolsia, “I am a paladin of the Order of Samular or well a Squire... I am on a quest, that I must complete before I can be officially knighted into the order.” He smiles and takes a few more bites of his food, dabbing his mouth with his napkin, “I am searching for a magical artifact of my order and family that was lost during the Orc wars. If I can retrieve it and return it to my order, I should be knighted and full fledged member of the Order. I am hoping I can find it or at least clues to its location in the mines.” He smiles, “What about you miss?”
As you finish your meals, Sildar comes strolling up to your table.
“Evening all! Gundren says you’ll be leaving at first light so best get some sleep. You lot are escorting the last wagon of supplies to Barthens provisions in Phandalin- shouldn’t take more than a couple days. We’re going to tie up a few loose ends here, then catch up with you”
He grins and adds “some of the supplies are for Barthen, so he’ll pay you when you arrive”.
To Elizabeth's question, Nicola says, "I think the biggest thing is the sky. The buildings aren't as close together, and you can see the sun and the clouds and the sky wherever you are. There are forests with more trees than people, and farms with wheat stretching as far as you can see... And it's quiet at night, none of the shouting you get all the time here. People move slower, people aren't as reactive, I guess. Things are a bit more peaceful. You'll see soon enough!"
She yawns as Sildar passes through. "I should be getting to bed. I'll see you all bright and early!"
Debolsia seems fascinated by the tales of the others. It seemed she was in good company which made her all the more confident in the expedition. She looked forward to the excitement that Elizabeth would experience on her travels outside of the city. The world was so large and wonderful. Debolsia relished exploring new areas as it brought her that same sort of glee. Irena was quiet, but Debolsia appreciated that she ate with the group at the table. When Vinras mentions his quest to find holy artifacts, Debolsia beams with excitement. She always loved hunting for ancient treasure to help remember the civilizations that were lost long ago. She made special note to learn more of Vinras and his mission feeling like they had the most in common of the group.
"That would be amazing,"Debolsia says to Vinras as he describes his hunt. "My area of expertise is on the way societies grow and fall over time. It just amazes me how much has happened in the world to get us where we are now. Everyone here has a story of where they came from and where they want to go. I just find it all fascinating. I haven't been sent by a god and I'm not fulfilling an order of a guild. I'm just trying to better understand people. Since I'm sort of an expert, I think it's safe to say you all have quite the future ahead of you."
Debolsia had to believe in herself or she'd never be able to succeed in the field. Honestly, she lacked the key traits a true anthropologist requires. She wasn't that great with talking to people and she certainly wasn't that book smart. She made up for that with being pretty keen on people's intentions. Her skills in masonry had allowed her to better understand the living structures people built while her skills in brew crafting often lightened the mood enough to make up for her lack of charisma.
When Sildar enters and suggests getting rest, Debolsia finishes up the few scraps left on the plate and stands from the table. "I'm thankful to be part of this expedition with you all. I will see you in the morning. Rest is important for traveling!"

Elizabeth followed Nicola and Debolsia, never one to turn down a free meal
Vinras would follow the three to go and get food as well. “I hope this tavern has some good selections for food.”
Debolsia grins. "Me too!" When they get settled at a table, the dwarf asks, "So what did y'all do before joining up here? "

Irena loaded her plate with fried potatoes and meat and took a large tankard of ale. She ate quietly as she listened to her companions stories.

The night passes peacefully, and before long you hear the sound of people moving around in the grey light before dawn.
In the courtyard outside the tavern, Sildar and Gundren are checking the last wagon and seeing to the horses.
