The stench coming from the creatures is almost overwhelming as the group collects themselves.. trying to choke them and stinging their eyes. The strong smell Is the least of the groups worries however as the four figures stand over their fallen friend in the fog. A loud CRASH! and screams fill the air from somewhere in town. A few additional lights flicker to life in the distant homes on the edges of town. You get the feeling the remaining creatures may have reached their destination....
Muck and Maggots is nearly packed to capacity as the villagers fill the inn. Worm is racing back and forth behind the bar serving drinks and cleaning classes as he waits for the Mayor to arrive. He keeps looking towards the door expecting Tirana to walk through and help in the kitchen at any moment as he struggles to keep up. The tables are full of people from every race and background, showing off the very diverse population of Dark water. Jorge is sitting back in the corner trying his best to keep to himself since he hasn't been feeling great lately. With the strange illness going around without knowing how it spreads and where it is coming from. After a while of listening to music and the conversations of those nearby, there is a roar of cheers and raised glasses as the Mayor enters the inn. The crowd moves away and creates a path for the Top hat wearing gnome as he makes his way towards the front of the bar. Once there he shakes a few hands before eventually reaching the small platform where a young blonde haired woman stops playing. She picks up her lute and offers the stage to him before moving it the crowd. "Greetings! I hope you all are enjoying youselves-oh-my-goodness-what is that?!" The mayor shouts as the smell hits the inn before the animals do. A fraction of a second after the mayor grabs his nose in response to the smell, the front door of the inn is nearly ripped from its hinges. An loud and startling crunch echoes through the building and street as a set of horns slam through the thick wooden door. The bull jerks its head back and forth as the door snaps and buckles under the force of the creature. Two more slams are heard as a goat and horse ram into the sides of the door frame as well. All three creatures frantically slam into the door as it all but crumples...
Many of the men and women near the door stagger and a few get sick as the smell hits everyone in the room. Worm reaches under the bar and and recovers a small hand crossbow while Mayor Wrenchawitz steps backwards away from the door. A few other villagers that have managed to shrug off the offensive scent have pulled out clubs and daggers and hatches.. preparing to fight off whatever creatures are moments from breaking into the inn.
Jorge wrestled with himself all afternoon. With so many falling ill, and not much known about how the illness is being spread, part of him didn't want to go out for fear of exposing others. But he was also curious about what the major was going to say, and he didn't trust the news to get to him without any embellishments. He lived less than a mile outside of town, but it was sometimes amazing how different the news sounded by the time it reached his yard. The big man finally decided to eat a light supper at home and head to the meeting afterward. As soon as he entered the Muck and Maggots, he ducked his head and slipped to a back table. He moved the other chair to another table so no one would be tempted to sit with him. Finally, he settled into his chair and waited for the meeting to begin, waving off Worm as he practically ran by, trying to keep everyone happy as they waited.
Jorge is a big man — over six feet tall and beefy with huge arms and a strong back maintained by his daily labor of cutting down trees and hauling lumber. He also sports a nice sized gut, made more prominent with every year past his prime. Back when Evrevra was still alive, she made sure he kept tidy. She personally trimmed his hair and beard, scheduled his baths, mended his clothes, and washed the world out of his shirts. Now, without her, he is the picture of bachelorhood: long and untidy gray/white hair and beard, dirty clothes, and not the best personal hygiene. And he always has a sadness in his eyes, as if he is right on the edge of shedding tears for his lost love. Those who know him best know he has taken to losing himself in his work, both with the trees, and with the Emerald Enclave, the faction he has worked with for as long as he's lived in Darkwater. He still wears the emblem on his shirts, pinning it dutifully everyday to make sure those he meets see it, though it is looking ragged from all of its years of use.
As the mayor steps up on the platform, Jorge sits up a little taller to listen to the diminutive official. The big man is one of the first to notice something is going on with his keen senses. He scowls at the stench, but doesn't move until the first animal slams into the outside of the closed front door. He slowly gets to his feet, eyes wide, especially as the other two animals hit. He looks around with the idea that the crowd needs to get out now.
Jorge would know that there is another way out of the building through the kitchen. It is normally used by Worm and other employees to fetch water and to accept shipments of goods.
Back at the swamp Norge turns to his friends, "We need to get Tiriana back to town where we can give her a proper burial. I won't leave her in a swamp." His expression turns even more grim. "Plus, with the direction the stampede was heading, I have a bad feeling that the townsfolk might need our help."
“I agree, this poor, sweet girl deserves to pass from this world with peace and dignity. Let’s carry her to a safe place where she’ll be protected while we can offer our aid to the town.”
”Norge, If you can bear her body, I will bring her sword; we cannot leave that behind.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Azure will touch his head and cast Cure Wounds healing himself: 12. As the wound closes he'll wipe away the blood and stand slowly to his feet. "Let's move." he says slowly but firmly as tears continue to stream down his face. He raises his shield and mace and prepares to run headlong towards the town.
"It's the least I can do. I will carry her." Norge picks up Tiriana's body in his arms. The body is still covered by his cloak and he begins walking towards town.
Beyanna picks up Tiriana’s rapier and wipes the dirt and mud from the blade and hilt before following the others up the hill towards town.
”One more thing, next time we face a stampede of runaway demon vows, let’s not stand right in their way. We don’t need anyone else being needlessly trampled to dearth. One is enough.”
”Bravery alone won’t keep any of us alive.”
————
(For Azure’s ears only)
Beyanna uses her telepathic ability to speak to Azure privately. It’s only a one way thing, he cannot answer her telepathically.
Inside his head, he hears her say:
”This especially applies to you, since you’re our only healer. Please keep yourself alive and do not do anything foolish. Leave that to the other two.”
Beyanna, there is no hilt. Tiriana always just wrapped the blade in a long strip of cloth, which then also allowed her to strap it to herself. You notice as you are cleaning the blade, which you've never really seen close up before, that uiveleth is somewhat crudely inscribed on (more like scratched into) the blade near the hilt. Uiveleth means eternal love in Elvish.
Mith takes the lead, running slightly ahead of the group with his scimitars drawn as the others follow closley behind. Tiriana bobs lifelessly back and forth as Norge tries to keep up with the group while carrying the body over his shoulder. The smell fades as they move away from the battleground in the center of the road.. only to return as the close in on Muck and Maggots. As the four of them approach the tavern, They see a mob of fleeing villagers piling out of the back of the building and spilling into a nearby allyway. In front of the building they see the three remaining beasts from the stampede they encountered earlier slamming themselves violently into the door....
*Meanwhile*
Chaos erupts inside of the inn as the door manages to hang on like a thread. People begin pouring behind the bar and pushing their way out the back door as Jorge directs them where to go. Mayor Wrenchawitz cowers in the corner clutching his top had in one hand and his monocle in the other. A small group of armed villagers move to pick up the mayor and take him out the back to safety. Soon there are only a few remaining brave villagers inside the inn as the door finally gives way!

DM, if Jorge hits one of the creatures with a chair, can it be counted as an improvised club? Even if it breaks apart, if he's still holding onto one of the legs, he can still use it as an improvised club in subsequent rounds, right? Below is my play if, in fact, you rule that it's OK to do that. If not, I'll change it up.
Jorge curses himself for leaving his club and shield at home. But who would have thought a Darkwater town meeting would turn violent? As the room empties, Jorge crosses to stand beside the bulging door. He grabs a chair along the way. Holding the piece of furniture by the leg like a makeshift weapon. He wraps the thick fingers of his free hand around the small piece of carved wood hanging around his neck and speaks a word in Druidic. Green veins snake their way from his palm along the outside of the wooden chair, decorating it with strange scroll work. Once the surface is covered, the green veins turn black as the magic strengthens the improvised club. Once the door bursts open, he raises the chair and prepares to hit the first creature that runs through the opening.
Movement: five feet to the side of the doorway (to be within melee range of something coming through, but not in its path) opposite the hinges (in case it swings inward)
Held action (for the first creature that comes through the door): wooden improvised weapon attack with shillelagh: 23; damage: 7 magical bludgeoning damage
The Kow manages to rip the door off of its hinges and throws the splintered remains up over the back of its head. Just as it moves to charge into the building, A crossbow bolt slams into the back of the creature. The stinking animal rears up and prepares to turn towards the direction of the kobold, just as Jorge approaches with a a chair held tightly in his hands. In one powerful swing the chair connects with the head of the beast and explodes with a spray of wood and splinters. The Stench Kow collapses to the floor in the center of the doorway as Jorge stands overhead breathing heavily and holding the remaining leg of the chair in his hand. Standing this close to the creature, The stench is almost overwhelming for the old bearded man..
Jorge - Con 12 save or be poisoned until the end of your next turn.
"Get the Mayor out of here now!" Worm would shout as he points the men protecting the mayor towards the back exit. He then climbs up on to the bar and fires his hand crossbow through the open door towards the stinking beasts! Attack: 24 Damage: 10
The bolt flies true and slams into the face of the rotting horse which kicks and bucks wildly. It is still alive but struggling to stay up on its feet
Meanwhile, Norge quickly ducks into a nearby alleyway next to the general store across the street from the inn and gently lays down the body of his friend. He then takes off running towards the two remaining animals that are fighting to get inside the building.
