Rastaris makes sure to get a table with his back to the wall and which has a full view of the common room.
He sets his belongings down and removes his travelling cloak and tries to squeeze as much water from it before setting it aside on an empty chair.
His arms are wrapped in bandages and he wears fingerless gloves. The bandages also can be seen on his neck, peeking sometimes from beneath his high collar.
He sits down and begins to eat the stew that was brought, pausing several times to take a large gulp of ale.
He motions to the others. "Let us eat and drink for now while we wait for our rooms. Take this time to replenish your strength. One never knows when the Lady of Fortune may turn her gaze away."
Once he finishes a serving or two of stew, he takes out a simple map provided by their common employer. He studies it for a moment. He approaches the innkeeper.
"My name is Rastaris. Thank you for your hospitality. I am sorry but I didn't catch your name?"
"As I mentioned earlier, we are headed to Phandalin and from there to the gnomes of Gnomegarde. Would you know where that is?"
"And could you point out where we are?" - Rast offers the map to the innkeeper.
OOC: Okay, it looks like changing it to private doesn't lock out anybody. I guess it just signals to other posters that the adventure is limited to the members in the private message thread.
Everyone welcome, Alliana (played by Rissa) to the group.
Alliana was part of your group that set out for Phandalin, but unknown to everyone (and this includes Rastaris), she carries another scroll case that contains a copy of the ritual you're supposed to deliver. Apparently, the cabal of wizards who hired you didn't want to put all their eggs in one basket.
Your group was formed in Silvereymoon in order to deliver thee scroll cases to the gnomes. You will be paid 50 gp each upon the delivery of the ritual.
OOC: I am modifying the innkeeper's reactions as follows.
After his tart comment to Dillion, he bows deeply before Alliana, recognizing her as a lady of taste and refinement.
"You're just an hour or two from the town," says the innkeep. "People entering or leaving Phandalin used to stop first at the Peryton. Our repuation was such that we always drew the custom of travelers.
"The place is called Gnome-N-garde," the innkeeper corrects Rastaris. "When you arrive at Phandalin, ask the Townmaster, Harbin Wester, for directions."
(Note: This is also what you've been told by your employers. You are to travel to Phandalin, ask directions from Harbin Wester, then travel to Gnomengarde.)
Alianna lowers the hood of her cloak and slowly nods to the innkeeper. She takes a portion of stew and a tankard of ale and takes a seat at the table next to the unknown elf/half-elf. She gives herself a moment for her amethyst eyes to adjust to the half-light from the fire. Then, she pretends not to observe the magic-user, just as she suspects he is pretending not to observe them.
OOC to Desarud: Orc L’Orange, Eau de Kobolde, et Le beute oculaire du beholdre :-)
“Do ye have missing ears as well, Rastaris? Were we not told to seek directions from Phandalin? Seems this whole business has unnerved you some. I’d not thought you to miss something like that.”Mithrokk shakes his head, drinks deep, and continues, “Mayhap some rest will do ye good.”
He then turns to Alianna and says, “Perhaps you can weave a spell to improve our friend’s memory then. I’ll not be ungrateful to ye if it saves me hide from getting carved.”
Rast carefully folds the map and returns to the table. He fishes out a book from his pack and begins to read.
To Mithrokk - "Mithrokk, it would be best to gather more information on our destination rather than just blindly relying on the instructions given to us."
To Alianna - "Please do not worry, my memory is quite fine."
He thinks back of how long it took him to learn the mystical arts. His teachers often lectured him on how slow he was and his fellow students teased him on how he found even the simplest of incantations difficult. But he endured these all because this was just a stepping stone in his goal. While traditionally, magic has been classified within the eight schools of magic, there are many other arcane traditions. Rast seeks to understand more about the magic of the mind, the sheer power of thought itself.
He thinks about Alianna. He muses that the magic comes as easy as breathing to her. The Elves are able to easily grasp the Weave which gift them an affinity to the arcane arts.
Maybe a good nights rest will take the edge of the companions. Maybe.
If you don't like the minis I used for your characters, you can always
a) send me the mini you prefer and I'll make another video (I won't say no to free minis, hehehe)
or
b) you can make your own video introduction of the character (including backstory), then post the video on YouTube or some other site so we can watch it. It would be a great way to explain how an elf noble became a monk, or a human noble a rogue (some of your backgrounds don't seem to jive, but maybe you've got a story for it)
Players who take option b earn their characters an in-game, non-xp reward, coz the universe (aka the DM) likes to see character origins and motivations.
Rastaris calls the innkeeper over to the table and speaks to him.
"Thank you for accommodating us this stormy evening."
"It looks like your place has seen much better days."
"Something you said earlier doesn't make much sense. You said - "People entering or leaving Phandalin used to stop first at the Peryton. Our reputation was such that we always drew the custom of travelers."
"So what happened here that made people stop coming. It looks like you haven't had much patrons lately. Not nearly enough to fix the leaks in the roof, it seems. Did another inn steal your customers? Or something...else scared your customers away?"
"You seem to be anxious for some reason or another. We are no danger to your small inn. Hmmmm. That's not entirely true. I've really just met these people a few days ago so I can't really say with any amount of certainty if they are dangerous or not. They seem quite able though. But your worries look to have started even before we arrived so I'd like to think we aren't the reason for your unease.
"So, if there is anything I can do to put you at ease, please let me know. You shouldn't need to worry too much, it's not healthy for a man of your stature."
Investigation Check: 18
Is the person Rastaris is speaking with posing as the innskeeper? How long has the inn been in this condition?
History Check: 25 or Charisma Check: 19
Does Rastaris know of any lore about this area in connection with the inn or Perytons?
Persuasion Check: 18
Can Rastaris make the innkeeper reveal what is making him anxious?
OOC: Go for it. We haven't gone very far so it should be easy enough to re-do.
OOC: Pao, I don't think recruiting is the right tag either.
OOC: It's a pickle, for sure. I can't find any instructions on how to do it either. (But I'll keep looking.)
So I can
I will never get discord I play using play by post

OOC: Awesome video, Mike!! Super impressed!! You've gotten really good at this!!
From the innkeeper's movements and facial expression, Mithrokk and Rastaris both get the impression that he is agitated about something.
Insight 7
OOC: I concur... Great Video Mike!
OOC: I'll see what I can do for Option B.
