OOC: Did you ask for a layout? Since Rastaris looks willing to risk going into the cellar, the innkeeper hands him the key. Anyone else joining him? Tell what your characters are doing; you have to pass through the kitchen to get to the cellar.
Farnakees speaks up: "Let's secure our rear then," he calmly says to his companions in a deep boomy voice heard clearly throughout the hall. "Innkeep! These other patrons... who are they and what's their business here?"

DM: Just because I'm paranoid -- the guy in the corner doesn't have a musical instrument like a flute does he? Because then I would have to say I have a bad feeling about this.

OOC: Yes, I asked for the layout.
Rastaris takes his gear and waits to the others who wish to come to join him before asking the innkeeper to guide them to the locked cellar door.

OOC: Is Dillion part of the party?
Not hearing any response from the Inn Keep, Farnakees approaches the elfish figure scribbling away on his book.
Intimidate 6. "Friend, I wish to know your business here. And if you are armed?" He studies the figure trying to glean what he can to understand his purpose and whether he poses danger.
OOC: Sorry, I missed the part where Rastaris asked that question.
"The key opens the door to the stairwell," says the innkeep. "When you come out of the stairwell, there'll be a long corridor. The door to the right leads to the room where we keep the food -- probably ruined now by the rats. The door to the left leads to where we keep the spirits. At the end of the corridor are two small rooms where the servants used to sleep."
OOC: Farnakees, there's only one other patron in the inn -- the crazy elf or half-elf the innkeep mentioned earlier. Rastaris sees that all he has is a pack and the book he is writing in.
"Friend," says Farnakees in an intimidating manner, "I wish to know your business here. And if you are armed."
At Farnakees's words, the elf (it's an elf) looks up with a wide smile on his face.
"The damned speak," he says, giggling. "And they speak to me!"
His giggles turn to laughter, and still laughing he clutches his book to his chest and runs out of the inn into the stormy night.
Rastaris ponders the abrupt departure of the elf. He has not seen many who seem to be touched by madness. Rastaris has often thought the elves have been abundantly blessed and finds it unusual that despite it all, they, like all other races can fall into the darkness of insanity.
"Shall we attend to the urgent matter at hand then?" he tells the rest as he motions the innkeeper to bring them to the cellar door.
"Mithrokk, I believe it would be best that you lead. As simplistic as it may sound, I believe that when going underground, having the dwarf upfront is recommended."
Rastaris then begins casting several spells in sequence.
He first casts Mage Armor on himself. Incanting "A castle of thought do I conjure, From all attacks shall it endure."
He then moves to Farnakees and casts Light on his sword. Incanting "May this tiny glimmer burn the darkness away. Reveal what is before me, keep the shadows at bay."
Finally, he summons his Owl Familiar back to the Material Plane. "Xelote, return". A tiny celestial owl appears on his shoulders. He gives it a reassuring pat.
OOC: All right, who else is going with Rastaris into the cellar? If you don't, I'll assume your characters decided to bunk down for the night. The rooms prepared for you are warm and comfortable, but musty smelling, as if they haven't been dusted or aired out for some time.
Farnakees, your sword is glowing. Given your extensive experience as a warrior for your tribe, you know that carrying something like this into battle would make you a target for every orc or goblin with a bow. The wizard be trying to get you killed, mayhap? ;)
"A bit of coin and a chance to help save a man's livelihood," Mithrokk responds to Rastaris. "Aye, friend Rest, I'll lead but ye handle the keys; I'll not be troubled by trinkets."
"Master innkeep, show us the way and it's off to work we go."
Alianna looks at Rastaris and says, "I wish to join you, fellow wizard." "After you, gentlemen," she nods to the others. She positions herself behind the goliath, thinking that his bulk may serve her well as a shield (yes, she's a user) and prepares to descend into the cellar with them.
OOC: I don't think I know any spells aside from the cantrip yet so Alianna is in serious danger of being killed by the first rat she meets =D. Anything I should be doing?
OOC - Alianna, you can go back to your character page and choose spells. Pick whatever you like, though it's a good idea to have at least one defensive and one offensive spell.
OOC - Um, the innkeeper isn't going near the cellar. You get the impression that if you don't come out of there, he and his boy will probably abandon the inn and hoof it to Phandalin. You get the impression that he's ready to call it quits.
Passing through the kitchen, you open the cellar door to reveal a dark stairwell. Descending the stairwell, you emerge in a north-to-south corridor cluttered with piles of furniture, ripped sacks of food, and barrels of ale. The corridor is dark; there are sconces built into the walls, but the torches in them have long guttered out. The stone of the corridor is wet, and you can hear the sound of rushing water to the south. The smell of rotten food or decayed flesh fills the corridor. Those with darkvision can see that the corridor is 20-feet wide and extends up to 60 feet, and continues beyond that. About 20 feet and 40 feet, respectively, from the stairwell are doors on the right and left of the corridor.
Farnakees takes is position next to the Mithrokk. "Rats! Sir Paladin. Pickled rats, Adobong rats. Nilagang rats. Rat sisig. Delicacies of my people from the mountain province..."

OOC: Can you tell us anything about the figure writing in the corner?
Rastaris did in Post 53
Farnakees speaks up: "Let's secure our rear then," he calmly says to his companions in a deep boomy voice heard clearly throughout the hall. "Innkeep! These other patrons... who are they and what's their business here?"
OOC: It's just one other patron, no? The figure writing in the corner that the innkeep cannot bear to throw out in the rain. Or did I miss something?
DM: Just because I'm paranoid -- the guy in the corner doesn't have a musical instrument like a flute does he? Because then I would have to say I have a bad feeling about this.

OOC: Yes, I asked for the layout.

Lathalas wishes to accompany Rastaris but not before seeing if the writer is someone of ... importance.

OOC: Thought Dillion wasn't part of the party yet based on Dan's posts.... =). Mike I think you meant Farnakees talks to the writing elf, right?
OOC: Lathalas, Rastaris, and Farnakees have voiced their intent to head into the cellar.

Rastaris follows the innkeeper to the cellar door. He unlocks the door.
"Go on in first and I shall lock the door from the inside once we are in lest the rats escape and further complicate the lives of the good innfolk."
OOC: Ok, I've set my spells. Thanks!
