Laire absentmindedly was twiddling the helmet in her hands, that she carried from the shop on the ope. "With the helmet I might fight underwater, though never tried and ... not sure how good I am with the swimming. Can try to disguise myself as one of fishfolk, if it's needed, and affect water somewhat. If cloud of fog can be created underwater - then there is that." Laire looked up, thinking what else she could throw in.... "I can heal a bit too. Oh, and if they truly allow us to take anything here ... Can I take this staff? I swear to return it at first request but there is something about it... I have never seen such a magnificent thing!"
[When looking at the prices, don't forget that Bryn offered a discount. You pay only 90% - so knock 10% of the price of an item; also they will buy items from you at 75% rather than the usual 50% (this second part was already built into the adventure, though now it thematically makes even more sense). You may also be able to pawn items that you want back later if you have anything that you want to get appraised (or identified) or know is very valuable.
(Somehow I assumed it was said to all of us - take what you need. If it was not, then no requests from Laire about anything)
[Apologies, to make it clear "Bryn hands you 1000gp reward and says “that is for your party” and then says to Vincent “to thank you for risking your life and saving me and Ness and then going back for Piotr, you can have any item we have in stock" means that the 1000gp is for everyone to share, but Vincent can choose any one item from the shop list.
And don't worry, I'm not playing favourites, it is because Vincent risked his life, especially staying and rescuing Piotr (and the (ex)tavern owner Háls Bifask), and if it wasn't for some good rolls including a 20 (not nat) for finding people quickly, there was a real risk of character death going down to the lower floor.]
(Favouritism would be the last thing to worry here :) My reading comprehension, on the other hand... But all is clear now, and Laire certainly would not ask for anything)
Beatrice will waggle her fingers and coo at baby Ness again if she can see her, before picking up a couple of spears. "I lost some of my javelins to the last lot of sharky boys, might as well try and stock back up now!" She purchases two spears before turning to the others. "Are we good with the helmet to people ratio, or do we need to go find more? I'd hate for us to get to the water's edge only to realise one of us will have to stay behind because we forgot to check."
"Are we good with the helmet to people ratio, or do we need to go find more? I'd hate for us to get to the water's edge only to realise one of us will have to stay behind because we forgot to check."
"We're one short, actually. Bryn, do you have a diving helmet or another device that would allow one without gills to stay underwater for long periods of time? Or any idea where we should enquire? We got these from Hektor."
"I can heal a bit too. ..."
"That's good. We'll need every bit of healing we can get. The Elixir Emporium should have something to help with that, too. From what I can see here... that crossbow should prove useful, but it looks expensive. For myself, I'll pick a shield."
Oden approaches a leather and wood shield that looks like it's been through quite a lot already goes to Bryn to pay for it. "I haven't seen any on display, but do you have a set of good studded leathers in your stock?"
Vincent is a bit flushed with pride when he tells Bryn “We only did what anyone would’ve done. And you are generous in the utmost. We actually are planning on heading back after those Sea Devils to make sure this place can be safe. So I’m glad you went to bat for us. We’ll need all the help we can get.”
Vincent selects the magic crossbow, along with bolts and a few javelins
Bryn looks at the helmet, smirks and responds to the armour question first "No other armour in stock at the moment unfortunately. I do have a guard contact at the upper guardhouse. They always have spare leather armour and sometimes even studded leather armour and they are often willing to part with any surplus stock for a donation."
She eyes the helmet again then answers "We don't have diving helmets... Or should I say, we should have been getting some experimental diving helmets, though it appears you already have them. We were getting them custom made for shipwreck salvage crews that we sponsor, as a lot of our more exotic and valuable items are recovered from wrecks. Hektor was working on those experimental helmets along with Faendal for us. Your captain did ask if there was anything that we had that could help you breath underwater, and I mentioned these, but I said they were unfinished and untested. I'm not sure how she or you convinced Hektor to part with them, but you are welcome to borrow them to help take care of those sahuagin. I'll have Faendal test them to see if they are working first though, and they will need to be returned to me unless you are willing to do shipwreck salvage later to pay for them. We are grateful to you, though have been generous already and those were a significant investment and one that we need to get a return on. Alternatively, if Vincent would like one to keep instead of anything else he has seen in the shop, he is welcome to it. In regards to other things that can help you under water, as I told your captain - Aldageam would likely have potions that could help, and Faendal might have scrolls. Your captain seemed to know Aldageam and she agreed that she would likely have things to help."
Beatrice, Ness gets very excited when she sees you and does the bopping/jumping sort of thing that babies do when they are happy.
Vincent and Beatrice, with the discount the spears are 9sp, they have plenty of spears.
Vincent, the crossbow is free, crossbow bolts (per 20) are 9sp they only have 20 bolts, but Bryn says Hektor has more. I was typing above post when you posted that you were getting the crossbow, so ignore comment about helmet.
Oden, the targe shield is 9gp with the discount, I'll get you to roll a straight luck check to see if the guards have studded leather. On 11 through 20 they do. The 'donation' is the normal price of 45gp.
Oh and from context, it appears that they outsource the 'identify' service they offer to Feandal at Dread, Wrath and Beyond.
Bryn leads you to Dread, Wrath and Beyond and you enter into a small waiting room with bench-seats. A single table sits in the middle of the room with some papers arranged neatly on it and some charcoal pencils stacked into a pyramid on top of the paper. There are no visible internal doors, though it is much bigger on the outside than it is on the inside, so you assume there is more to the shop.
A small creature, unseen when you entered, launches itself into the air from the bench-seats. It flaps its leathery wings and holds up its hand up in the (fairly) universal wait symbol, in a firm but non-threatening way.
It flaps its way over to one corner of the room, waves its hand in what appears to be just a regular part of the wall and suddenly a mouth appears in the wall. There is a 5 second pause, after which a dry and formal sounding voice says "Welcome to my shop. I am busy doing something important. If you have an item you want identified leave it on the table and come..." the creature flaps half a meter along the wall, waves again, a mouth appears and the voice continues "...back in an hour. That will be 10 gold. If you are interested in buying one of my scrolls or items, mark your choice on..." the creature repeats the process with a third mouth appearing "...one of the order forms on the table and come back in an hour."
For most of the party this is the single oddest thing that you have ever experienced (except maybe seeing an island being swallowed by the sea).
Reguh and Aliez can roll Arcana checks if they want, on DC15:
Bryn rolls her eyes and asks you all "Do you have an hour to wait? If not, I can try and speak to him about the importance of customer service, again!"
"Time is pressing. I'm sure he won't mind the interruption too much if you're with us. You bring him business, after all.", says Oden, taking in this place and the strange creature.
Should someone need more money to get equipped, Laire would gladly add all "her" part of the reward (she still did not count it as deserved) for the cause.
Bryn calls out "Oy, Faendal, get out here, you have customers."
The little creature flies over to the wall and starts the first message again "Welcome to my shop. I am busy doing something..." though the message is interrupted when Bryn calls out "We also have the diving helmets you helped create and these customers might be testing them out."
The message stops suddenly, then from behind you all you hear the same voice, but now coming from Faendal in person. Faendal says "Well why didn't you say so. Hektor has finished these much faster than expected. I take it that this is the salvage crew that will be helping us find my ship?"
Bryn indicates "Unfortunately I haven't convinced them of that just at the moment, but they saved my life, so I am letting them borrow the helmets. I need you to make sure they are all in working order."
Faendal does not look happy about this, though takes the helmets and examines them thoroughly. He then gets out a pearl which he holds to his forehead with one hand whilst laying his other hand on each of the helmets. He reports to Bryn "The helmets are working exactly as expected, which should be of no surprise since I came up with most of the design. Each one holds an hour of breathable air, which will refill at dawn. Now if there is nothing else, I have important work to do!" [Anyone who has one of the 4 helmets can add a Breathing Bubble to their inventory]
Bryn stops him and says "I think these potential customers might be interested in anything that would help them fight underwater too."
Faendal indicates "Well, if you have 3000 gold, I have a very useful ring. I was saving that for the salvage crew, though it looks like the search for my ship will be delayed anyway. Otherwise if you dont have that kind of coin, the Scroll of Alter Self can allow you to swim and breath under water and the Scroll of Polymorph will potentially allow you to transform into a creature that can swim and breath underwater. If you change your minds about the salvage and Bryn is willing to act as your guarantor, I could extend you a line of credit. If not, it is cash up front and I'll go and fetch the items. "
[Reminder about using spell scrolls of a higher level: If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 10 + the spell’s level.
Reminder 2: Part of Bryn's business is a pawnbroker, if you have anything valuable that you don't want to sell for good, but would be willing to use as collateral for a loan and that would get you more money.
Reminder 3: You were told "Three Earrings already has a friend in Brokenbank, yes, a sea elf like Oden and crewman Dillyu. I think you would like her and her shop, she makes potions, yes, and she owes Three Earrings a favour. Three Earrings also knows a human in Brokenbank. He is not a friend to Three Earrings, but he still owes Three Earrings a favour. Maybe his favour can be helping Three Earrings’ new friends out!”" As such, you could just skip this shop if you aren't interested in anything on offer.]
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Arcana 11
“Greetings Faendal, I would love to have a closer look taken at my robes. And I’m also interested in the scroll of alter self, as well as some paper and ink and herbs. The ring seems quite a bit out of my current price range, though I do find it interesting.”
Faendal deals with the purchases first, walking through what appears to be solid wall and returning a minute or two later with a scroll, herbs and a paper and ink.
He takes the 50gp off Aliez, hands her the paper and ink and says "If you need to copy a spell into your spell book [obviously mistaking her for a wizard] or cast any preparatory spells, you can do so in this waiting room. Unlike much of this town, this is a magic-safe zone. As long as you don't cast anything that hurts somebody else, or worse causes damage to my shop and laboratory, it is OK and you won't be judged."
He tells Reguh "It will be 10gp for me to magically examine your robe and 240gp for the scroll. Please take the robe off and place it on the table, it will take at least 11 minutes, so you if you have other things to attend to, you can do so and then come back. I will also check how much paper, ink and herbs do you need?"
[It is fast approaching noon. If anyone who is not buying anything from Dread, Wrath and Beyond, or who has finished there wants to go anywhere else, they can. Remember, most shops wont give you 75% of an item's value like Prawn's Pawn, so if anyone wants to sell anything, now is a good time. Also, if people want to buy anything from The Sea Elf's Elixir Emporium before getting back to the Wavechaser, now is the time to do that.]
