How many campaigns have you ever been in that simply died? You were having fun, but then...others...slowly...stopped...posting. Or maybe DM "had to take a break" that never ended. And now here you are again, trying to find a new campaign, hoping that maybe, just maybe, it'll be the one. The one with players determined to stay the course. The one with a DM that is invested in the campaign. The one that might actually see completion.
This is the one.
We've been ghosted by two DMs, but here we are. We've lost players to the clamor of life's distractions, but our determinations holds fast. Death itself has tried to stop us - and failed.
We're looking for one or two characters to join our party in Phandalin. The character will join us with 900 xp (level three). Stats should be standard array. Please include the usual name, race, class, background, and snippet of backstory explaining why your character is in or is traveling to Phandalin. A plot hook is available on request, without bias. In addition, we want to know how familiar you, the player, are with the campaign - whether as player, DM, or both. A link to your character sheet is also recommended.
Currently, we have a paladin of Kelemvor, a Divine Soul sorcerer, and an Open Hand monk. Don't let this discourage you from posting a favorite character build; we love a good story most of all.
We will leave this thread open for applications through Friday, July 24 and will make or decisions and notify the appropriate players by the end of Sunday, July 26. Thank you all!
I have a forge cleric I have been wanting to play.
Name: Damian Strongshield
Race: Human (V)
Class: Cleric (Forge)
Background: Clan crafter
Backstory: A sole survivor of rockslide Damian, was found in the dwarves city of Mirabar. A Dwarven Clan known as the Strongshields found Damian and took him as one of their own sons. Knowing they would out live Damian they began to teach him the skills of blacksmithing at a early age. At the age of eight Damian made his first shield; he learned quickly and soon he began making armor just as good as his adopted family. Impressed they decided to teach him about Mordain and his blessing to the forge. In time Damian would gain Modain’s blessing become a cleric and traveled the land in pursuit of making the ultimate armor. Damian Heard of a mine lost to the dwarves, it said to be untouch and ripe with good ore. He set out to see this lost mine for himself and find some good ore to make armor out of.
I personally never played LmoP in IRL, I have played a bit of it on here and then the game went stagnant. We only reach the town and faced some thugs. That was about it never went in or explored the mines.
Backstory: Trenna was raised in a small village of mainly giants and halflings around the Cold Wood. Her small family had lived there for as long as she had known and made a small library for the people there. Over time, however, the town began as their world began to fall apart due to the chaos and danger of the north she had to find a way to protect all that she, her friends, and family had worked for to make. Making a deal with the god worshipped by the town Glace, giving her powers to help provide outside resources for the village as well as put it under her protection. She has come to Phandalin to try and make some money for those back home and find ways to help get everything a bit more normal.
Never played it and have a slight idea of the beginning but other than that nothing else.
The shirt version is - she used her magic first tohelp out her family on the farm then to busk the Streets when her father and sister disappeared in an orc raid. Later she joined a circus but got kicked out for insulting a noble. Now she needs work.
She would've gone to Phandalin looking for work. Perhaps she heard rumors.
Name is Taylor, and I am in the gmt +2 timezone. I have DMed part of LMoP for my family, and but life got in the way and no one picked it back up. I really want to play this module though, and I know how to not to meta.
Class: Monk (Way if the Open Hand *subject to change based on content available)
Background: Folk Hero
Backstory: Nipperkin and his wife Gil (pronounced Jill), own a small brewery that delivers to Phandalin on the regular. He loves his job as dreyer and brewmeister, but has always had an urge to go out and explore the wide world. Now that the business has some extra hands he has gathered what he thinks he needs, said farewell for now to Gil, and is out to seek his fortune with the next group of adventurers that will take him.
Cade is a wanderer, traveling here and there and trying to see as much of the world as he can. he has sailed on ships between Neverwinter and Baldur's Gate, hiked the ice flows of Icewind Dale, traveled the deserts of the East, and much more. He has been in the woods of the North for a few weeks now, traveling from here to there. Recently he has stumbled onto Phandalin and is spending time in the tavern, one of his vices is drink, so he tends to over-indulge when possible.
What PC's do you have already? I have a fair few character ideas lined up, so it would be easy to choose something that fits in.
I'd be inclined to go for this guy however-
Name- Signis
Race- High Elf
Class- Wizard (School of Conjuration)
Background- Sage
Signis was found by his master, the hedge wizard Bartleby, as an infant lying in the arms of a dead soldier. The only clue to his identity was a torn half of a tapestry that had been used to wrap the newborn baby. After growing up travelling the sword coast with his master, he struck out on his own to unravel the mystery of his past.
(I know it says evocation on the character sheet, ignore that)
I have updated the opening invitation to include the classes of the current team members. If you have already applied with a character build but feel the character would step on too many toes, you may certainly add a second character idea. Remember, though, that what we're looking for most of all is the possibility of writing a fun story together.
Name: Gaffney Pickstriker ("Picky" to his friends)
Race: Mountain Dwarf
Class: Bard (college of creation)
Background: Sage
Backstory: Picky is a jerk, plain and simple, BUT he's a jerk you want around. He seems to always have an answer to any problem and when push comes to shove he's no slouch in a fight. He's currently in Phandalin trying to find access to the lost mines, hoping they will have answers to his lifelong question "Is the earth truly alive?"
I have a forge cleric I have been wanting to play.

Backstory: Erret grew up in a Noble house. Not as a noblemen's son, but as a noblemen's servant's son. Never really feeling comfortable in servitude, Erret often took to tomfoolery; sneaking off to where he shouldn't, stealing things that were not his, and getting caught along the way! One day he takes it too far, stealing an extremely valuable item from the master's vault, causing him and his family to be thrown to the streets with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This fuels Erret's disdain for the nobility and wealthy of the world, and catalysts his career as a small-time thief in the nearby big-time city of Neverwinter. But big cities come with big problems; the guards. Erret has many a rough run-in with Neverwinter guards over his few short years in the city. One day while sitting in one of his favorite cells in the city prison, he decides enough is enough, and that perhaps he could use his set of skills to make money adventuring. Escaping (the guard's shifts were etched in his mind by now), Erret sets out upon his task of finding the best place to start his new vocation. In his searches, he comes across mentions of a group of bandits that operate in a small town called Phandalin. But he also finds out that they're... not nice. An idea starts to form in Erret's mind of seeking these ruffians out, infiltrating them as a fellow criminal, and causing as much mischief from within as possible. That sounded to the Halfling as an excellent way to start his adventuring career...
LMoP Exp: I've played LMoP up until you first reach Phandalin, but never further! Desperate to take it all the way, so to speak ;)
Judging by your LMoP progress, I thought this backstory would give him enough reason to be there, but then also an "oh, cool, you guys did what I came to do, you seem alright, what else you up to?" kind of moment :P
We will continue to leave this open through Friday, July 24, and will make our decisions and message the appropriate players by the end of Sunday, July 26. Thanks again, and good luck!
Having spent the major portion of his life studying the Arcane Arts, Symon felt it was time to make his way in the world. Having studied with a reclusive mage in a remote tower in The Crags, north of Neverwinter, Symon Set out for Phandalin to research and write the history of the Forge of Spells. He hoped that this project would eventually allow him access to the forge to craft a true wizard's staff for himself. He thinks of himself as a 'Wizard,' not the more mundane sounding 'mage,' and always so refers to himself. He is skilled in the alchemical arts, to the degree that he uses those abilities to support his ventures, that and selling 'love potions', a catch-all phase that encompasses all the sorts of potions people think they need to accomplish some particular desire. He does not do 'foul magiks' potions, poisons and that sort of wicked thing but, he does give people potions that really do make themselves feel good, on the theory that a person who feels good will be more successful in trying achieve their desired end than one who is feeling 'doubtful', shall we say. One of his specialties is 'Explosive Beads', which is a fair money maker if he finds the right sort of buyer.
Things seems to have started off brightly, his travels proceeding smoothly, and with a bit of profit, until, that is, he neared mining town Leilon. Just north of the that tow he was waylaid by a small grund of goblins, from whom he barely escaped with his life by scattering most of his coin and a couple of Magic Missiles. In the ensuing scramble of the goblins, really only five of the nasty creatures, for the coins and their cowardly nature when face with a determined adversary, Symon managed to evade them and has thus come to hate the smelly creatures.
And so it has come to pass that Symon Twist arrived in Phandalin essentially coinless and has since striven to rebuild his purse, while at the same time pursuing his goal of writing about the forge. And here he hears a rumor of a small band of adventurers who are going to the actual mine itself. Unable to resist, Symon begins searching them out in hopes of persuading them to take him with them.

I have heard about the Mine but never played the mod. I did do a quick glance to come up with a hook, but no deep dive; just geo-locating as it were.
Backstory: my household was alwase fights and arguments. eventually i got thrown out onto the street and served as a soldier in my cities militant forces. they all laughed when i said i was a stealth op. but when i pulled out a bracelet from one of the other people they changed their attitude quickly. while there we went to war. i was sent in to find intel with my partner. it was a set up. we were ambushed and my partner died to get me out of there. before he died he told me to go to Phandalin. im on my way there now. when i get there im going to need a hell of a drink. these memories are getting out of hand.
”Rebel” is a soldier of fortune who has regularly been on the losing side of battle. He can chalk up several scars- and one hand up to just below the elbow- as losses in his life. This is largely because he takes underdogs with more ideals than sense on as employers. After the hand was cut off in battle, he thought his days of soldiering were done, but not so... Rebel had taken up a job scrubbing floors (on hands and knees as he really couldn’t use a mop, even). And he started to hear whispers in between the cracks in the floorboards, and from just on the other side of the walls, and up in the rafters. Offers of a return to glory.
Rebel began talking to the voice, and learned many secrets of the fabric of reality. Out came a small Imp, black as night. It began to tell him of a spear that would allow him to continue his fight. Skip ahead for now, and Rebel did find the spear. The Imp grasped onto Rebel’s arm stump and changed into a horrible approximation of a hand, and clutched the spear. Rebel was now ready to go looking for trouble in battle again.
Rebel - Human - Soldier - Hexblade Warlock, Pact of the Chain. I’ve tried this out once before but the game never got up off the ground. Basically, it’s just an Imp with one more shape changing ability to form a hand for Rebel. I figured it could be a really fun reason for why Charisma is used instead of strength in weapon attacks for hexblade’s.
Backstory: Nov was found and taken in as a child by the leader of an underground guild that specializes in thieving, spying, and assassinations. His shadow sorcery came on slowly as he grew older and no one is quite sure why, but he’s more than happy to have additional skills that will make him more effective. He strives to show the guild leader that he is worthy of all the effort the leader has expended on his behalf. He is currently in Phandalin on an assignment.
