The call grows no nearer nor more faint. It is a loud bleating, but the timbre of this call does not share the dark baritone of the pair you've just slain. This creature sounds considerably smaller.
Gravity stows the shortbow and draws out the Flame Tongue Scimitar with a metallic clung while admiring the weight of the blade, then moves towards the origin of the noise.
"Let's kill it! Younglings will one day grow up, and those adult creatures will start drilling gigantic holes through people."
<being ivert here. Yes. It us a calf. Nit reallymeant to be a moral decision thing. Factually, your Pzcs (the Oerth-born ones at least would know of tbese creaturws and at least heard if them being domesticated. They can serve as mounts, pets and even produce a particularly rare cheese, which could be wother durecr sustenance or a side hustle. Im not foecint a pet on you here, but i am making one available. It does not yet have a death gaze nor a toxic stink, but i dont know if your pcs know this; nature checks would tell us.>
I'd say mental state equals hungry. I doubt it could comprehend d that you've just killed its parents. It might be able to survive om its own, but it's pretty clueless. It's expecri g to be fed by its parents. Seeing the lizardman, he sniffs at him and when presented squid. Gobbles it up greedily
“Well, Sam- looks like you have a new pet. Train it well, maybe it will make a good mount one day. Potent magical gaze..” he says with a shudder. “Shall we look for their lair, perhaps some incidental treasure or things left from previous victims..?”
"Or we might find more creatures like these"- Gravity attempts to complete the unfinished sentence while scribbling on a tattered piece of parchment.... possibly drawing the physical outline of the calf so that she might design it's mechanical version.
"Sam, what are you going to do with the little thing? Did you think about it's potential name?"- Gravity will bend forward to nudge the calf using the grip of her scimitar, then she kneels down to examine the pug marks/ hoof prints left behind by the adult creatures. She's trying to find the way that might lead to a hidden entrance of the lair.
The little creature circles sam, snidfi g fkr more treats. Congratulations Sam, looks like you're a mommy.
“See think long term as travel things” Giving it a lot more squid
(so is he a pet and mount)
He's size small at the moment, so rules aside, I would say he could fit a kobold on him. As he grows, mount would be a viable option, but should require an exotic saddle for overland travel purposes. In a pinch one might try without it in combat, but expect either str see or animal handling check if it comes up. Of course, this is all putting the cart before the horse. For the moment, he's pretty small. Rather than directly growing into the adult form, I think a juvenile would have yet to master the death stare and instead rely on more visceral means of subduing prey and threats. Probably very close to if not exactly this: https://www.5esrd.com/database/creature/catoblepas/
After getting turned around in the marshes, you once again find the path to the Temple entrance. As you approach, furry creature in tow, you notice a pair of patrolling lizardfolk walking the perimeter of the entrance. The entrance is adorned with imagery evoking Moloch, but it is little more than a doorway opening onto the stairs that ferry itinerants and members of the Temple into the subterranean space.
Ana watched Tetrevess change his look and said "Ooh, that's a neat trick. I'll have to figure out how to do that too." Of course she already knew how to do it but they didn't know that. She nodded at his suggestion of a rest. "I think it would be good to rest and go in fresh, if you think we can do it safely here."
"Let's ask those patrolling lizardfolks about the location of a safe place here, then we can rest"- Gravity will suggest then yell like a shrewd peddler woman to address the pair of guards. "Hey... ho!"
"Stop. Who approaches. State your business." Guard 1 calls back to Gravity. Guard 2 takes his bow in hand and knocks an arrow, but keeps the weapon in the alert position (arrow is pointed at the ground, bow not draw, not under tension). He adds "And what are you doing with that rancid beast?"
<The party killed most if not all the lizardfolk last time you were here. These guards have not met you before. They're new.>
Gravity will aim her shortbow at the source of the shriek, ready to attack if the owner of the voice moves within the direct view.

@Wile_E_Coyote, What's the physical and mental condition of the calf? Gravity already made a choice but it can change depending on the situation.

Tetrevess will use disguise self prior to entry. “Do we want to rest to enter fresh? Or am I the only one injured?” He asks the group.
Gravity suggests that they should drink multiple doses of Potion of Healing to regain some lost vigor.
