In an audacious bid for power, the Cult of the Dragon, along with its dragon allies and the Red Wizards of Thay, seek to bring Tiamat from her prison in the Nine Hells to Faerûn. To this end, they are sweeping from town to town, laying waste to all those who oppose them and gathering a hoard of riches for their dread queen. The threat of annihilation has become so dire that groups as disparate as the Harpers and Zhentarim are banding together in the fight against the cult. Never before has the need for heroes been so desperate.
//Thanks again for allowing me to join the campaign! I hope that the Irongut brothers serve the Realms well!//
//Figured I'd update to include some character stats, as well.//
Buster
Dwarven Barbarian (1 Barb)
Str 16 / Dex 13 / Con 17 / Int 10 / Wis 8 / Cha 12
Soldier
The black sheep of the family, decided not to live in the shadow of his brother and joined the military. There he found his true calling - brewing. Now in an effort to bridge the family gap, he journeys with his brother fine tuning his own craft along the way... and if he gets into a few scraps along the way, the better for it.
You've been in contact with my friend JR, and he sent me the link to join this PbP campaign for which I am very excited.
I'm copy-and-pasting some info about my character here to let you know more about him.
Brother Brisket
Dwarven Butcher-Monk (1 Monk)
Str 16 / Dex 14 / Con 14 / Int 8 / Wis 15 / Cha 8
Clan Crafter
Brother Brisket is a member of a Dwarven monastery which trains butcher-monks, artisans and warriors of the cleaver who have pledged themselves to a life of service protecting their fellow Dwarves and providing them with the very best in cold cuts. Brother Brisket has embarked on a journey of discovery, both internal and external, as he searches out and samples the cured meat products of the world around him, keeping an ever-watchful eye out for the lost charcuterie recipes of yore.
Brother Brisket is Lawful Neutral, primarily concerned with keeping the vows and oaths of his Order and the general well-being of Dwarven-kind, he holds no ill will to anyone and will look to keep order in all his interactions with the civilized races; however his butcher's training and ascetic mindset have also prepared him to get his hands dirty if needed... blood washes off after all.
I just want to let you know that although I have a slightly unusual concept for my character, he is not a joke, and I don't intend for him to be a distraction or problem in anyway. I just like the idea of a STR based "monk" whose adventuring skills come from highly trained and practiced *practical* skills, such as those gained in a profession like butchery. His skill with a meat cleaver (hand axe in game terms), and his comfortablity with literally hacking carcasses apart seem to me to be the basis for an interesting melee character.
What you can expect is a character both researched and roleplayed with consistency. Don't worry, I won't be asking you what type of local sausages are served in every pub we go to.
He has a real name, though due to his membership in the Order currently goes by Brother Brisket, a tradition of the monks. I plan on taking mostly monk levels, with one or two in Barbarian to simulate the more visceral butcher's training. I see his barbarian rages as actually being from a secret recipe of spiced jerky that his Monk Order uses. With careful preparation of rare herbs to the meat as it is dried, they create a food that acts like the mushrooms that Viking beserkers may have used in our world. My character does have an herbalism kit proficiency to account for this.
Everything is PHB except for the background which I based on Clan Crafter from Sword's Coast. Which is bascially just a dwarven specific version of the Guild Artisan background. Since I don;t have access to the SCAG content I recreated it via custom, changing only the Insight to Perception to account for the more outwardly militant part of this butcher's guild, being in effect a warrior monk order.
// I have to say, I'm really excited for this campaign, I've never actually played a magic user before, so this should be fun. Also, I enjoy the fact that you two are brothers, I think that will bring an interesting twist to the game//
// By the way, if anyone was looking at the thread and thinking of joining, our DM, SilenceRedeemer, has the following rules: PHB only (races, classes, feats, backgrounds, etc), ability scores use standard array, everyone is starting at level 1 with her or his class and background standard equipment package and starting gold. SR is has some wiggle room in character creation, but only if it's a really creative (and approved) backstory/concept. I PM'ed our DM to get the ball rolling for me, so I am assuming interested parties should do the same! As it stands, we have a sorcerer, a monk and a barbarian.... itching to throw down. //
The town of Greenest was founded by the halfling Dharva Scatterheart, a rouge who fancied herself queen of the Greenfields. Scatterheart passed away without ever achieving that level of eminence, but her town grew into a thriving community. Its success isn't surprising, since Greenest is the only town of any size astride the Uldoon Trail, the most direct road between the eastern cities of the Dragon Coast, Cormyr, and Sembia with the Coast Way running south to the great cities of Amn, Tethyr, and far Calimshan. The trade caravans that pass through Greenest bring gold to the town's merchants and craftsfolk, and governor Nighthill runs the town at the behest of the inhabitants.
For the past several days, you have been traveling a road that winds lazily across the rolling grasslands of the Greenfields. You have all been hired to guard a caravan of goods to be delivered from the town of Greenest. Sundown is approaching when you top a rise and see the town just a few short miles away. But instead of the pleasant, welcoming town you expected, you see columns of black smoke rising from the burning buildings, running figures that are little more than dots in the distance, and a dark, winged shape wheeling low over the keep that rises above the center of the town. Greenest is being attacked by a dragon!
As you enter the town, five humans dash out from between two buildings on your left. A limping man and three young children race across the street into more shadows, and a woman carrying a round shield and a broken spear turns and faces back in the direction from which they came. Six kobolds stream out of the alley on the family's heels and fan out around the woman, who looks determined to delay the creatures for as long as possible. The kobolds either do not notice you or mistake you for cultists and are focused on the woman. Roll for initiative...
//At this point you all should use the dice roll tool to roll for initiative, i will be posting the initiative scores for any enemies and relevant npcs after i get your initiative scores. you also do get a surprise round at the start of this combat, so when you make you post about initiative, go ahead and take your surprise turn. To make combat easy you should roll for attack and damage in the same post so that we can resolve turns efficiently, also to declare the target you are attacking just say something like "I attack kobold3" //
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

Verenz notices the kobolds and yells at them in draconic, "Stop what you are doing you insects!" In an attempt to intimidate them into running away or listen to him, Verenz launches a Ray of frost at the nearest kobold.

Buster shrugs to his brother, "Bah, kobolds - I am not even going to bother raging... yet. Just don't let them flank you. They're tricky when they flank you. Learned that the hard way." Then as he runs by Verenz he calls out, "Keep them off our sides - I don't want any of these little buggers sliding up in a spot we aren't facing."
Buster then runs to the kobold pack's outer flank, hoping to get a kobold one-on-one, swinging his maul at the head of the kobold he squares off against... "Aaaaarrrrrgh!"

Roll for Damage (if it hits): if Non-Crit: 9 or if Crit 11

was your attack roll a natural 20? because in 5e those are always critical hits. where you roll double damage.

// Yes, it was a Crit. When the roll is green, that means there's at least one critical success in the roll. If it's red, then at least one critical failure. So I rolled Nat 20s for both initiative and "to hit." And I gave two rolls for damage, a normal one (2d6+3) and a critical hit... Which I realized I messed up on. I did 3d6+3 when I should have done 4d6+3... Got confused with the barbarian extra weapon die on Crit feature... Sorry about that. Upon spotting the hostile creatures ahead of the group, Brother Brisket spits out the sprig of dillweed he had been absentmindedly chewing on as they were traveling.
He cocks his head slightly towards Buster. "Small, weak, and fond of pestering tactics, eh? Kobolds sounds exactly like little brothers," he says as he thumbs the leather strap holding his cleaver in it's sheath.
Turning towards the Kobolds, he calls out in Draconic, "You should really listen to my big Dragonborn friend here if you want to live," as he lets fly with his cleaver towards a third agressor.
// Attempting to assist Verenz's intimidation attempt if possible. //
// Initiative: 11, Cleaver (hand axe) throw at Kobold_3: 8 to hit, Damage if it hits: 6 //
Brother Brisket then uses 15 feet of movement to spread out sideways from his companions and reduce the clustering of the group.

Looking forward to meeting our new member in here in the fracas! Also nice meeting your Verenz. I had just happened to choose Draconic as my background language (in game rationale being they are the oldest meat eaters, and so my Order uses Draconic for our sacred texts), so I'm thinking maybe that's how you and I bonded/became friends. Perhaps you were in a pub singing lonely Draconic drinking songs and were surprised when a Dwarf joined in? Something like that. I'm open to all ideas. //
