Having nothing better to do, Weizol will walk around the ship tentatively to familiarize himself with its structure. If he is to be responsible for its defense for the journey then he should know what he is defending, he reasons.
(He wants to examine the ship for what he can think of as points of weaknesses or places that absolutely should not be lost to an invader. He'll also look for places that are easy to defend or advantageous to fight from. 19)
(Huh. Well, all right then.)
The ship doesn't appear to be damaged or noticeably weaker than any other ship of this same size and build, but you do become aware of some possible tactics that could be more likely to be used against the ship.
First, Jarlaxle said that there was a cargo you needed to protect. You are not aware of what the cargo may be, or if it would be damaged by water, but if an attacker were to damage the hull enough to sink the ship, it would be difficult (but not impossible) for them to retrieve the cargo, if they were aware of it.
Second, the ship does not have many weapons to protect against an attack. It only has a ballista and a mangonel, but you are not sure how practiced the crew is in using these weapons. If they are skilled in using these weapons, an attacker may try to target and destroy them upon an attack. If they aren't skilled in them, they may instead devote their first attacks to attacking the crew, the sails, or the hull of the ship.
Third, the ship only moves by sailing. There are no oars. Because of this, if the sails were to be destroyed in an attack in some way, this could strand everyone in the ship at sea.
Fourth, there are 3 rowboats on both sides of the ship (starboard and port). Each rowboat can hold 4 people. There are 25 crew members, Jarlaxle the captain, and the four of you. In the event of an attack, if the ship were to be destroyed, and you had to flee in the rowboats, there would not be enough room on the rowboats for 6 of the people on the ship.
Weizol looks at the halfling with a frown. "This is a ship in the middle of the vast ocean, and you were employed to protect it. Perhaps you can run back to find whichever hole you buried your dignity in."
He sighs and returns to the question at hand. "If you have read the information I provided, I believe you will see the most important part of this ship is the sail. If it is destroyed, we will be left at the mercy of the elements and a sitting target for further pirate attacks. The other obvious target is the cargo which the ship is transporting. I advise that we adhere to conventional wisdom and try to keep any hostile vessels at bay with those weapons..." He points to the ballista and mangonel. "And if that fails, repel against boarding attempts. One method may be to appeal to their sense of self preservation by starting a small fire on their vessel to force them to split forces and put the fire out, however this may also drive them to commit to taking this ship if the fire spreads too fast. It seems like a dangerous strategy."
"It should be said that my profession has nothing to do with martial defense. These are the observations of an amateur."
Saiba gives the Weizol a long look after his initial comment but says nothing about it. He'll say instead, "Sounds like a solid assessment to me. And I'm no more experienced with sea travel then any of you I'm assuming so that seems like a pretty good place to start. How about you Whim? Any ideas?" he finishes turning to the young man.
Weizol returns Saiba's look with an unapologetic, leveled stare; As if challenging him to disagree. As the topic moves on, Weizol turns his gaze to the ocean again.
(He calls it like he sees it, with nothing to soften the blow in between. He's as harsh on himself as he is on others, expecting everyone to follow what their verbal contracts.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Ah, sorry. Yes, we can do that now.)
Okay, the journey to Luskan is going to take a few weeks on the ship. Here are the random encounter rolls for the first tenday, two rolls for each, and there will be an encounter on a 19 or 20. Feel free to describe how your character helps out on the ship for the first tenday. The crew mostly tends to ignore you, but you can sometimes hear then whispering something in Undercommon while glancing over at you:

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
(So encounters on day 3 and day 7? Do we skip to combat then?)
Weizol for the most part observes the crew and stays out of their way as they tend to the ship. He doesn't exactly seem at home on the open sea but is managing.
Saiba would spend the first day moving around the ship and examining all the information given to him by Weizol (and confirming that he indeed did have a sharp eye despite his relative inexperience). After getting a lay of the ship, he'd spend the rest of the first few days offering to help out where needed on the ship and act as a friendly ear to anyone needing it.
(No worries, I usually post a little less often on the weekends anyway. Would it make sense to see if one person from the other group wanted to join before things get started?)

Vallen strolls up to the group after doing a quick lap around the ship to check the general layout. "Well, a quiet journey will allow me to delve into my studies. I have never had the opportunity to study a ship such as this and these dark elves intrigue me. Might be I can learn their language before the trip is over. "
