EDIT: Thanks everyone for applying, I have a full party now! Keep an eye out though, if this thread pops back up it means I need to recruit replacements!
Hello again all, semi-long time player and DM here again. Earlier this week I made this thread in order to get my bearings a bit here. I committed my first mistake as an online DM by assuming I could get a campaign idea up and running in a single day on an entirely new format(my bad, I know I said "see you tomorrow!"). Oops. Most people seemed to be gravitating towards a homebrew campaign, so that's what I went with. I've only done one once before, and wanted to start from scratch this time.
Now I'm semi-ready to jump in, with a half baked homebrew setting and plot ready to go. Based on numerous advice I've received, here are some expectations you can have, and some I have:
Party size will be 5 to start out with. If we drop to 3 by losing players, I will re-open recruitment.
Campaign will start at 4th level.
Campaign will be combat-lite at the start, while I get the hang of Play-By-Post and develop digital map making skills. That being said, once I get into the groove of things we can kick it up a few notches and run some gauntlet adventuring days. ;)
That being said, one of the things that interests me the most about Play-By-Post is the RP potential, so expect to lay heavily into that during this campaign. If you're just looking to "roll dice and smash monster heads," this may not be the campaign for you.
This setting is fresh out of the oven and so undercooked/raw Gordon Ramsay would probably scream in my face. Some details may be subject to change and player input is always welcome.
To start out, I'll be expecting at least one post a day. If you miss a day we'll put your character on follow-mode until you return. If you know you're gonna be too busy, just drop a message in the OoC so we know what's up. If you're gone for a week, your poor character is going to have a brain aneurysm and be replaced.
I'm most active during U.S. East 6pm - 2am, but I'll take players from any time zone.
At this table, we roll for ability scores and throws 1's in the garbage. ((re-roll all 1's, the same applies to hit die on level ups if you roll instead of taking the average)).
If you aren't sure if something (race/class) is allowed, just ask. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that is forbidden.
Now here's some information dump about the setting:
World Name: Ravere Primary Plot Setting: Empire of Evanicea
For a time, the mortal races of Raverewere bound together under a single banner. Driven by prophetic nightmares of desolation, High Queen Saturnia united the reams of men, elves, dwarves, dragonborn, and all others into a single empire. With the strength of their unity, the guidance of the demigodly Seven, and the power of the Starlight Court, the forces of Raverewere able to push back an invasion of horrific creatures known as Abyss Heralds.
With their purpose fulfilled, the Seven were guided to a realm fitting their divinity with a device crafted by the pantheon, the Infinite Ark.The Starlight Court and its Luminous Knights were given stewardship over the Ark, should the need for the Seven’s return ever arise.
After the passing of a millennium, old alliances fell apart, and upon the death of her then ruling son, Saturnia’s empire shattered into a dozen different kingdoms.
In an era bordering on a dark age, the Starlight Court disappeared in an act that would be immortalized as the Abdication. With the peacekeeping Courtvanished, the world teetered over the edge into a period of widespread warfare, destruction, and desecration.
Cities, artifacts, history, and entire cultures were lost during this time.
Forty years ago, Prince Valerius Astre blazed a path of conquest across the middle kingdoms of Ravere, forcing the other noble houses to concede to his rule. It is no great secret that House Astre fancies themselves the spiritual successors to Saturnia, destined to unite realms once more. However, most consider their ravings of the Abyss Heralds' return as nothing but madness. Valerius might have conquered the entire continent, were it not for the rise of a powerful vampire lord to the west, overthrowing House Nautusand turning Gorzhadiainto a kingdom of undead. With a horrific force at their flank, Valerius was forced to pull his armies back west to secure the mountain passes separating Evanicea and Gorzhadia.
The two regional powerhouses have been at a stalemate since then, though the horde of undead grows larger ever year.
On the surface, the region appears at peace since House Astre’s unification of Evanicea. But ancient hatreds and new hostilities bubble just below the surface, threatening to destroy faux peacetime image of the new kingdom. As Valerius' reign comes to a natural end and his son Drasusprepares to succeed him, allies of an old enemy make their move against realms of Ravere.

Name - Lo Race - Tiefling Class - Bard (Lore) Connection to Sybil - We'll say they're an old flame. How that's interpreted can be flushed out later. Backstory - A disciple of Ellemrar and a wizard dropout, Lo spends their time doing odd jobs and busking enough to put food in their belly. When Lo gets word from Sybil it takes them a couple of days to decide it might be worth the trip to see their old 'friend' again.
Umuni lived in a nuclear family, both her parents were Half-Orcs, and one of the members of her distant family had a workshop where they worked tinkering and smithing. She apprenticed there, becoming a professional in more than just those two areas, and learning skills that'd make her prosper in the future.
One of the more important things the workshop also did was sell their products. Umuni was expected to do that, too, as one day she was expected to take over the workshop work on it alone. Knowing that was never going to work, she decided to rethink her plans for the future. In a moment of reckless decisions, she left the town a few days after discovering about the expectations of her family.
Living on her own, she explored her options and discovered becoming an adventurer would be something she was capable of and would return a decent sum to make up for the fact she relied only on herself from that point forward. She made new contacts and became successful in that career
Connection to Sybil: Umuni's a recent and very active adventurer, working for money, and searching all around for new contractors she can work for. She did stumble upon Sybil once, as a potential hirer, and although she's never been asked to do a job for her yet, they've already had communication before, and Umuni let her know she'd always be up to see for potential work in the future.
Name - Dórey Brandsdóttir Race - Halfling Class - Wizard (Order of the Scribes)
Backstory -
The great city library of Candlekeep stands high on the mountains in the kingdom of Evanicea. While though many world’s greatest and rarest tomes and manuscripts were lost during the dark era along with the disappearance of the Starlight Court, many archeologists were determined to recover the secrets - Dórey’s mother, Lovisa Brandsdóttir, was one of them. She was a devout worshipper of Ellemrar, lord of knowledge and invention. At least twice a year she would lead Dórey and her half-dozen brothers and sisters on a journey from their home to Candlekeep. While her mother worked, unlike her siblings that would require distractions and entertainments to make the pilgrimages to Candlekeep bearable, Dórey would sit in the corner quietly watching her mother work, wishing to know all about the books she had been studying that day.
Suffice to say Lovisa tried to get Dórey interested in Ellemrar and the spiritual rewards of accumulating knowledge. For Dórey however, the appeal was something else. It was the blackness of the ink, the smell of the parchment. As soon as she could afford writing materials of her own, she would write abundantly.
It was only a matter of time, of course, before Dórey encountered a man of the rare kind who habitually carried books on his person: a wizard. Sahil Kaliyur was a mage from the far southern continent who happened to be in town during a caesura between his adventuring travels. Dórey saw him in a tearoom where he was trying to get some peace and quiet to copy a spell scroll into his spell book. Fascinated by what she saw, Dórey - a young woman now - set herself up on a table just behind him and surreptitiously glanced at the scroll and began making a copy of her own on a piece of parchment.
Dórey finished this work fairly quickly and at about the same time as Sahil, even though Sahil had been at his task for an hour before she came in. She thought that perhaps she had managed to do this unseen, but Sahil turned and confronted her with a degree of bemusement. He asked her what she thought she had just written down. She replied that she did not know, but she had been focussing on copying it verbatim and that she expected it would make sense when she re-read it later. Sahil assured her that it would not - it was a spell beyond the ability of all but the greatest of master wizards.
However, Sahil was impressed by how quickly she had made the copy and the quality of her penmanship. He asked her if she would like to learn how to duplicate spell formulae the proper way, and Dórey leapt at the chance. And so it was that Sahil returned to town frequently, each time spending a week or two with Dórey. After a few such occasions, it seemed not so much like he was providing her with a teaching service, but that she was providing him with a scribing service. Sahil could not keep the secret to himself for long. In time, Dórey was receiving invitations from other wizards in the region to come and scribe for them. As payment, Dórey did not take gold. Instead, she accepted food, accommodation, books and knowledge. Specifically, the knowledge of the magic that was held in the words she scribed. She travelled, and she learned from many arcane masters.
Not long after, that the scribes at Candlekeep invited her to join the guild. But she stopped short of allowing herself to be cloistered there. For the wizard Sahil had not just taught her to transcribe spell formulae; he had also given her a hunger for the secrets of the world that are not only locked up in libraries.
Therefore, Dórey remained an itinerant scribe, offering her services to other wizards less and less, and expanding instead her own knowledge and personal library. And so has it been to this present time, in which Dórey looks at the many years ahead of her as a chance to accumulate more of these words of wonder.
Her mother, Lovisa, never did impart a desire to worship Ellemrar on her daughter. But she did share one thing: the belief that words of fact are not the only kind that have value, but that stories and tales are of equal standing. Thanks to her mother’s belief, Dórey has never doubted that her acquisition of knowledge would eventually take her on an adventure that would yield a tell-worthy tale of her own.
Connection to Sybil -
Being a friend of Sybil Lynsav, Sahil Kaliyur was asked when Sybil was looking for a group of adventures to solve the mystery of the secret formation of an undead army. The kind of curiosity and daring required, Dórey was the name came to Sahil’s mind, who at the time happened to be in the area of Silvefair, and was writing to Sahil about her recent run-in with undead and her ventures. Thus, Sahil introduced Dórey to Sybil, trusting her capabilities to be of use.

Name - Eindryn Smokemane Race - Centaur Class - Paladin Connection to Sybil - Eindryn is a smith working in Silvermane where Sybil is now residing. They have had business dealings Backstory, Character Motivation, or Roleplay Excerpt -Ability Scores -
Backstory
Eindryn was apart of a herd that lived between Evanicea and Gorzhadia. Initially, they tried to keep their distance but the growing armies and increased hostilities forced their normally peaceful tribe into a precarious position. Forced to make a choice, much of the herd chose to side with Valerius while others moved further into the kingdom to start a new life.
Eindryn has been one that had chosen to stay. He trained, he joined the battle field and he fought. He killed undead and saw his comrades die. Eventually, he sustained an injury and was removed from the battle field for recovery. At this point he decided that he would retire from the battle field and try to settle down. He took to traveling a bit, and after some years he found himself at Silverfare took up work as a smith, a position that had plenty of work being at the crossroads of three mines. For the last seven months he's been here and generally regarded well. He works hard during the day and when needed assists with repelling any undead that come near the town. However, the recent increase is weighing on his mind. This was becoming a second home and again undead are starting to threaten it.

Backstory: my halfling-parents told me they found me in the forest, more dead than alive. I probably was dumped or left to die but a warband passing by since no arakocra villages are known in the region. As a bird in a halfling-parents village I was rather conspicuous and teased a lot. But halflings soon became easy for me to overpower since I grew quite fast and quite strong. Nevertheless I did not really felt at home regardless of the effort my parents put into it. In the first I found creatures that would accept me. I built a roost near the village in the forest and have acted as a self appointed guardian of that part of the forest until I got summoned.

Name - Kathrine Westridge Race - Variant Human Class - Cleric (Peace) Connection to Sybil - Cousin/sister/other family relation. Backstory, Character Motivation, or Roleplay Excerpt:
Kathrine is a follower of Maliel. She has spent much of her life, up till now, working to promote peace in these times. She has traveled many of the more chaotic places, trying to spread her god's word and help to heal the ravages of the war.
Kathrine does not like violence, but knows it is sometimes needed to have a chance for peace int he future.
She is a pretty human woman with chestnut brown hair, and brilliant blue eyes. She wears a set of half plate armor (if allowed at 4th level - otherwise a breastplate or even scale mail.). The symbol of her god is emblazoned across her shield. Under her armor she wears a simple tunic, stockings, and leather boots. She is a calming influence on most situations, listening to both sides of an arguement before making her own decisions.

Race: Half Orc (For flavor if allowed I would like to say he is a half elf instead of half human. I would still use the half orc stats it would just be to explain parts of his backstory.)
Class: Wizard (Bladesinger)
Connection to Sybil: His parents served with her in the military.
Backstory:
Born to a half orc father and elven mother, Urgoth was taught the ways of combat and magic from a young age. While he had the strength of a half orc, Urgoth always showed more potential in magic and the way of his mother's people. Due to th rather secluded place Urgoth lived the life of a hermit, spending his time on his study of magic.
Once old enough, Urgoth decided best way to learn and hone his skills in magic was through practical application. Taking what was needed he left his parents and joined up with a small group of sells words, using his time with them to gain experience and learn of the world. After a few years of this, he returned home in time to receive a letter Sybil that he offered to follow up in his parents stead.
Can you elaborate on those deities some just to get a feel?
Not sure what kind of details you're wanting, so I'll just blabber on. This pantheon runs on a somewhat loose rule of non-interference. Though they could have directly stepped in against the Abyss Heralds, they felt the mortal races' fates should be in their hands. But they did not want to leave them totally defenseless, and so sent the Seven. The Seven were a group of mortals juiced up with godly essence to guide them through this peril. A close analog would be that they were demigods, but they weren't "directly related" to any of the deities. They then went on to found the Starlight Court, a union of knightly orders, druidic circles, religious groups, and arcanist organizations meant to directly serve underneath the Seven. Exemplary people made up the Court members, worshiped as heroes second only to the Seven.
After the defeat of the Abyss Heralds, the Seven had no desire to lord over the realms of mortals. They were too mortal to join the deities, but too godly to remain among the mortal races. There's little surviving information around the Infinite Ark, but the general consensus is that it was created by the Ellemrar to allow travel between realms. It was used by the Seven to go to a world of their own, and left in the care of the Starlight Court.
Name - Jhoriv Wilbury Race - Human Class - Bard Connection to Sybil - One of her contacts that she's turned to in the past to ferret out information and secrets... for a price. Backstory, Character Motivation, or Roleplay Excerpt -
College of Whispers, Spy background, Telepathic feat
A traveling performer, Jhoriv is competent enough with his lute, song and stories to earn himself meals and a bed at most inns and taverns he performs at, but not to where he stands out from the flashier, more theatrical minstrels that tour the land. And that's just how he likes it, striving for a step or two above mediocre, and entirely forgettable in the long term. He's not one to hold a stage all night, but will play a for an hour or so, get his meal and ale, and retreat to a corner booth that just happens to be situated next to some folks having an interesting discussion.
Performing may be his vocation, but secrets and information is his trade.
Sybil had been a chance encounter many years before, he'd played a rendition of a song that apparently touched off a nostalgic memory in her, and she bought him an ale to go with his dinner, and shared how much it meant to her to hear the song again. While she'd been off duty, he noticed her military demeanor and an insignia at her belt. Later when he overheard a couple of unpleasant roughs plotting an raid on a military supply cache, he tipped her off with an anonymous note slipped under her door.
Sybil was more competent than he bargained for, however, and she later approached him and broke it to him that she knew he'd been the one to supply the information. Their relationship has been friendly/business since, if Jhoriv comes across something she ought to know, she makes sure to compensate him for his troubles. Occasionally she'd ask him to look into something in particular... but she's not in the habit of summoning him. Something seems off about this, so Jhoriv is going into this meeting with both eyes open.
Connection to Sybil: Being the scholar that she is, Adrona has traveled to Silverfair quite a few times to study and observe the undead.
Backstory:
When Adrona was young she lived in a remote Aarakocra village. One day when she came home her parents gave her a pack of supplies and sent her to find her way in the world. As she was a curious child she found her way to a great library. There she learned many things, but nothing satisfied here curiosity. She decided to leave the library to see the world in person. The book weren’t enough anymore. She then began traveling the world researching. It was on one of these adventures that she met Sybil in Silverfair while studying the undead.
Name - Zewin Race - Fallen Aasimar Class - Sorcerer Wizard Connection to Sybil - A former solider ally Backstory, Character Motivation, or Roleplay Excerpt -
Zewin was born as a champion for Elwirith, the Shade. Therefore, he was born as a fallen aasimar with shadow magic at his heart. His guide is Galladia a stern and judgemental being who provides him with prophecies and visions. He was raised by loving parents but he was cold and distant. He was even cold to the touch. Those who lived nearby believed that the darkness within their son was a curse upon the family for past transgressions. The neighbours feared him and so they hated him.
As Zewin grew his powers grew too, and eventually, he decided to the army as a soldier to wield his powers for the benefit of his people. Though Zewin did not fight for his own ideals but instead was encouraged by Galladia. However, his company was defeated and he barely survived. Now he is haunted by the memory of their deaths.
Since then he has decided to try and learn more about his powers and learn how to wield them better. He has possession of a tome full of black pages with the writing only being able to be read in dim light or darkness.
Name: Luster Race: Tiefling (Levistus) Class: Druid (Circle of Dreams) Connection to Sybil: A friend, and occasional help with village troubles. Backstory:
Luster was born to two actors in a theater troupe. Much of her childhood was spent around the troupe, watching practices and playing with one of the member's pet cat. She occasionally helped the stage hands, either by going into the city to buy something (usually lunch), or help in simple tasks. Her time with them grew shorter as she got older, as she started music lessons. Not long afterwards, she started playing at some of the performances. Everything was looking bright, but it would not stay that way for long. Late one evening, hours after the last performance, the theater house burned to the ground. No one knew the cause of the fire. The troupe was devastated, and they were unsure if they could rebuild it. After several brainstorming sessions, it was decided that they would go on tour in hopes of raising the funds. They gathered what they had, bought some wagons, and headed out of the city.
The young Luster was excited by the life on the road. The new towns were fascinating, and the amount of trees surprised her. She took up interest in cartography, and tried making her own map for wherever they travelled. For a first attempt, it wasn't very good. For several months, the troupe travelled, adjusting their plays to better fit with what they had. It was not perfect, but it was enjoyable for Luster. One day, as they were travelling down the road, they passed by a gnome woman, injured and unconscious by the road. The troupe pulled over, and helped her. After an hour, she woke up, and explained she had been attacked by a group of hunters, after trying to stop them from hunting a magical creature. The troupe allowed her to stay with them until they got to the nearest town, where she could better recover. Over that day, and the next of travel, Luster spoke with the druid, fascinated by her and the stories she had. Once they got to town, the woman was helped to a nearby tavern, where the troupe rented her a room. They stayed for a week, and at the end of it, Luster asked to stay in the town. She wanted to help the druid, Sellia. Her parents reluctantly let her stay, and gave her some coin to help.
Her time as Sellia's apprentice lasted seven years, and was rarely ever easy. Luster took to the challenge, learning all she could about the world. They travelled, giving their assistance to any person or beast that needed it. Occasionally, they would pass through Silverfair. She became friends with Sybil, and whenever they passed through the two would meet and share news. Recently, Luster has started out on her own, to try and learn some things that she could not under Sellia.

Name - Dórey Brandsdóttir
Race - Halfling
Class - Wizard (Order of the Scribes)
Backstory -
The great city library of Candlekeep stands high on the mountains in the kingdom of Evanicea.

This was becoming a second home and again undead are starting to threaten it.

connection to Sybil - in my younger years he had an encounter with a werebear I rescued him from. Since then we have been keeping contact on a not so regular base

Name: Urgoth
Name - Jhoriv Wilbury
Race - Human
Class - Bard
Connection to Sybil - One of her contacts that she's turned to in the past to ferret out information and secrets... for a price.

Name: Luster
Race: Tiefling (Levistus)
Class: Druid (Circle of Dreams)
Connection to Sybil: A friend, and occasional help with village troubles.
