Torman follows behind the others, listening to whatever conversation he might while appearing, perhaps, a little absent-minded. Realizing the delay he is causing, he too hands over the silver pieces from the much reduced pouch around his neck.
He sighs at the transitory nature of wealth taking solace in the conviction that knowledge is the true wealth of the universe.
"Multi Pass" The clerk, hands each of you a small carved totem of a whale, dragon and bear, made of whale bone, then points towards the door, leading towards the village. "Duca lu" and waves opening and closing her hand. Next to he door is a sign that says Duca Lu.
(Ah! Maccath passed through here. Let's go and ask the villagers if they know where the mage went next. Now, does anyone have something to help speak their language?)
Gryrig will use Psychic Whispers to connect himself and one of the others (whoever volunteers first) to two of the villagers (whoever seems most like chief, village elder, knowledgeable old sea captain, etc).
Psychic Whispers. You can establish telepathic communication between yourself and others—perfect for quiet infiltration. As an action, choose one or more creatures you can see, up to a number of creatures equal to your proficiency bonus, and then roll one Psionic Energy die. For a number of hours equal to the number rolled, the chosen creatures can speak telepathically with you, and you can speak telepathically with them. To send or receive a message (no action required), you and the other creature must be within 1 mile of each other. A creature can’t use this telepathy if it can’t speak any languages, and a creature can end the telepathic connection at any time (no action required). You and the creature don’t need to speak a common language to understand each other.
The first time you use this power after each long rest, you don’t expend the Psionic Energy die. All other times you use the power, you expend the die.
Once they are able to communicate, he will again try to ask about Maccath the Red, this time using telepathy to overcome the language barrier.
"Hello again. Greetings to you all. Apologies for this way of communicating, but we thought it would be easier and clearer as there is a bit of a language barrier, no? Let me try again and introduce ourselves: We are explorers from the south, and we thank you for your hospitality. We are of course happy to pay for any food and drink.
Now, we are here to look for a lost sorcerer, actually. One called 'Maccath the Crimson'. A thiefling sorcerer of great power who came up this way some time ago in search of an ancient artefact. We noticed the name in your ledgers, where we signed ours also. Can you help us trace Maccath or find where they went next? It is terribly important that we find them. Not to sound overly dramatic or anything, but the fate of the world might be at stake."
((Would it be more useful to connect to two of the villagers, or one villager and one of us? Kat would be willing if he wants to loop in more of the party, but would leave it to Gryrig to make that decision.))

(As I understand the skill, you can do it once for 3 people plus Gryrig - so I was thinking 2 of us and 2 of them (whichever two look most likely to be useful interlocutors). I don't think Gryrig could split into into 1 now and 1 later - but he can reuse the skill at the cost of a Psy die if necessary. So if Kat volunteers, that means Gryrig connects Kat, and the 2 most likely looking villagers, and himself of course by default)
((I totally misread your initial post to be connecting to one of the others OR two of the villagers. Sure, Kat wouldn't object and has solid Insight to be able to help him in sussing out any shadiness.))

The woman at the desk eyes widen with fear, Oyaviggaton seems to be an involuntary thought before glancing towards an nearby Iceberg before she cuts off her mind from Gryrig.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Telepathically, Gyrig communicates to Kat only: "Oyaviggaton ... does that mean anything to you? Looks like that nearby Iceberg is something of interest ... any guess on whether a nice or nasty surprise?" (Anything to roll for to see if Gryrig recognises it?)
To the second villager who has not yet cut off communication, Gyrig asks: "Look, we already know about Oyaviggaton (indicating the iceberg with a gesture). But you live here and may have some more recent information. Can you tell me more about it? You can do this confidentially, this telepathic link is very private and secure! The others need not know that you told us anything if you don't want them to". (Gryrig is bluffing about knowing things of course and actually has no clue, but he is hoping he might get at least something from the other one. Persuasion roll 11 If Performance instead, add another +3)
<Not quite as well as I'd hoped. They seem to be totally immune to my charms. Very distressing.
But it looks like there's a "Oyaviggaton" over at the iceberg over there. Whatever or whoever that is. So if all else fails, we can just go examine that.
Maybe you can try. They might warm to you more>
Gryrig thinks back to Kat.
Resignedly and disappointed, he sits down by the nearest fire and starts having a little bit of food and drink while maybe the others try. Best to have a snack before heading off to another iceberg
Duncan stays alert and listens, not sure what is going on with the language barrier. When Gyrig stops, he stands nearby uncertainly and asks, “Should we not continue to whatever passes for a tavern here? I have no magic to decipher their language, but perhaps someone who speaks ours may be in a common area.”

Kat resists the urge to point at the woman and make a face, and follows the boys out into the village, looking around for anything that might be evidence of other non-villagers passing through... clothing that doesn't match the majority here, any trinkets or baubles that look to have come from civilized lands...

Kat would have made sure to point it out or at least verbally clue her fellows in to Maccath's name in the registry.
