“Hey, any of you ever think that traveling with carrion might attract wild animals. Why don’t you send one off in the opposite direction?”
Upon hearing that... Lilitu squinches her eyes and sniffs a couple times then raises her right arm up in the air and lowers her head slightly sniffing her armpit for the tell tell smell of carrion as she walks in a tight circle unsure if the smell is coming from her or somewhere else.
"We are watched from the woods," Kia says quietly to Bors and Martha, the two in the party with the biggest weapons. She stays at the lead point, but makes sure the party is bunched, with Lilitu in the middle. "We must make haste, if we can."

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. Here's my D&D stuff. I love it so.
The howling of wolves grows more and more numerous. You begin to hear growling, now. A sense of dread begins to swell in you, but don't dare look back.
In the mist behind you, and in the woods to either side of you, you see over 50 wolf-like shapes stalking you, keeping pace with you, but keeping their distance.
And...is that...? A humanoid shape among them...?
Kia, it's almost as if all of your hairs are standing on end right now.
Lilitu smiles as all the pretty doggies and waves when she catches sight of the humanoid shape, "why are we in such a hurry, I think they just want to say hello." But tries her best to keep up with the others as they move, amused by Martha walking backward... giggles, "MARTHA, MARTHA, MARTHA..."
Lilitu frowns, "ohhhh no we wouldn't want that... she smells like cotton candy and everyone knows how much doggies love cotton candy, but you are the great and all powerful MARTHA, MARTHA, MARTHA, you can just send them packing if they come to close right? Whats that Loo Loo?" Lilitu dearly doubles up laughing still trying to keep moving and looks at Martha, "Loo Loo says not to worry, most of them will just go after the kitty and I think she may be right."
The wolves do not engage, but are becoming more and more numerous as you approach Barovia. There are about 75 of them now, slowly approaching, snarling, growling..
If it looks like there will be a fight, Kia will challenge them (or one, if they appear to have a leader) with bared fangs and a hiss. Her intent is to attract their attention so the fighters can choose their battles more effectively. Kia is confident in her ability to avoid harm. (We will see if this is misplaced.)

Keep in mind, I mentioned there are about 75 wolves watching you, following you, along with a mysterious humanoid figure. It is very unlikely you would all survive a fight of 7 vs 76. I would advise to pick up the pace and head towards Barovia. =) As the number of wolves grow, they wouldn't mind a fight, should someone engage them....
Unless anyone feels brave, (or foolish =P) I shall present the next encounter.
At some point while the party is examining the body, if there are no answers forthcoming, Kia may interject to Grishkar, "Prove your use, wizard, can you pierce the veil and ask this man what was done to him?"
Grishkar scoffs and spits on the corpse, "Better to ask our otherworldly priest there or even the strange girl who just blew her nise on the evidence. I can make other uses of the body, but if you need magic to find out what happened to this man, you may be of use as much as this man is to use in this state."
Grishkar gives a nod to his minions. Two step forward and drag the body onto the road, then Grishkar kneeled next to the corpse. The arcane patterns woven looked like a twisted mockery of a doctor's work. After a few seconds, Grishkar slammed his fists on the dead chest and the figure began to rise to its feet. "Another minion made in Nerrul's glory." Grishkar fishes through his pack and pulls out a long, thin cloak, "Not much protection, but that's not really the point, is it?"
As you all approach Barovia, the wolves slow down, howling, pacing, disappointed there was no feeding time this time. The fog envelopes them all as you walk, until the early evening contains just you on the road, and not a sound is heard except your footsteps.
Tall shapes loom out of the dense fog that surrounds everything. The muddy ground underfoot gives way to slick, wet cobblestones. The tall shapes become recognizable as the dwellings of the village of Barovia. The windows of each house stare out from pools of black nothingness. No sound cuts the silence except for a single mournful sobbing that echoes through the streets from a distance. Nearly ALL of the buildings and homes of this town have their windows and doors boarded up, been looted, and ruined. Claw marks can be found on nearly everything - the doors, the wood, the ground. If you can look into any of the stores, they hold nothing of value.
LOCATIONS TO EXPLORE:
Bildrath's Mercantile (Shop), "Blood of the Vine" Tavern (Inn), Mad Mary's Townhouse (House), Burgomaster's Home (House), The Church, The Cemetery.
The claw marks are made by nothing BUT wolves. Many, many attacks. Some marks are older than others. It's very clear that this town has been ravaged by something over the period of hundreds of years.
Someone is crying in a nearby house. There are no other sounds coming from the beginning of the town. The buildings are very packed together. You could easily traverse one end of the town to the other in a short time.

"Oh dear, Briarfang darling, I don't think you are going to be very much welcomed here."She says sadly.
"Hmm, how about this you stay near town on the outskirts, and if anything happens, just track me down alright."The wolf sits down and barks at her, not moving.
Seeing the mist, Martha spins back around, “Ooor not. Guess we got a date with destin. Let’s get moving, but try to be quiet.”

Martha pulls her glaive off her back, grits her teeth, and tightens her grip, “We have company...” As she continues walking backwards.
