ENABLING CONTENT FOR YOUR CHARACTER
To use content from The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying in the character builder, you will need to set the character preferences to include the Free League source category (see the .gif below).
NEW CALLINGS
This source features 6 new callings or class, each with 2 new subclasses.
Captain: Chieftain and Thane
Champion: Sharp Shooter and Slayer
Messenger: Counsellor and Herald
Scholar: Healing and Lore
Treasure Hunter: Burglar and Spy
Warden: Forayer and Hunter
These callings or classes are mostly supported as expected with a few notes.
Beyond 10th Level. Callings in this source are not intended to be played past level 10. D&D Beyond does not limit characters to particular level caps at this time. The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying compendium does include suggestions on how to continue playing a character once level 10 is reached, these suggestions are not automatically added to the character sheet and must be manually implemented.
Multiclassing. The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying provides suggestions on how to pursue more than one of the six callings listed in the source. D&D Beyond does not limit multiclassing between sources, however it is not recommended to multiclass callings from The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying with other sources.
NEW CULTURES
This source features 6 new cultures or species and 8 new species options: Bardings, Dwarves, Elves, Hobbits, Men of Bree, and Rangers of the North. These are mostly supported as expected with a few notes.
Backgrounds. Each culture is accompanied by 6 backgrounds that reveal something about the origin of the character. These backgrounds differ from those in both the 2014 and 2024 Core Rules and are not able to be selected as a background in the character builder. Instead, the backgrounds described in this source are added as species traits and can be selected on the species tab of the character builder.
NEW SKILLS
This source features 5 new skills: Explore, Hunting, Old Lore, Riddle, and Travel. In addition, the source features an alteration to an existing skill Medicine. These new skills and adjustment to per-existing skills can be manually added to the character sheet using the instructions and gif below.
On your character sheet, click the gear icon at the bottom of the "Skills" box.
In the side panel at the bottom, expand the "Custom Skills" section and select "+ Add Custom Skill".
In the side panel, click on the new custom skill that appears. Expand the "Edit" section. Here you can add the name of the custom skill along with its corresponding stat. This is also where you can manually adjust this skill, for example you can gain proficiency in the skill.
Note that any class feature, species trait, feat, or other game element that impacts these new skills is not done automatically and would need to be adjusted manually.
VIRTUES
This source features a variety of new virtues or feats. Virtues function the same as feats and can be added to your character sheet in the same matter.
The Dour-Handed. This feat currently adds +1 to all melee weapon attacks, not just ones using strength. At this time D&D Beyond cannot support bonuses to strength only melee weapon attacks.
REWARDS
This source features a variety of new rewards that can be used to upgrade your character's items. Rewards are granted through class features on the six new classes or callings presented in this source. Rewards cannot be attached to an item on your D&D Beyond character sheet and are not supported on classes outside of The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying.
CRAFTS
This source features a new system for crafts. Crafts are granted through class features on the six new classes or callings presented in this source. Crafts are not supported on classes outside of The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying.
THE SHADOW
This source features a new system for navigating the shadow within the land of Eriador.
Shadow Points. Players accumulate shadow points as they play in The Lord of the Ring Roleplaying setting. D&D Beyond does not currently support a way to track shadow points on the character sheet. Players can use the "Notes" tab of their character sheet to track shadow points.
Shadow Conditions. The source features two new conditions related to the shadow: miserable and anguished. We're currently unable to support new conditions.
Shadow Paths. Players may advance along the shadow path related to their calling as they adventure. Shadow paths are added to the class features of the corresponding calling and can be adjusted directly on the character sheet.
PATRONS
This source features 6 new patrons that sponsor the adventures of your Company. At this time, D&D Beyond does not support patrons.
NEW MONSTERS
This source features a variety of new monsters. Many of the monsters are fully supported, however the Nameless Thing generates its stats using rollable tables. The monster listing for the Nameless Thing includes the lowest stats featured in Table 6. Dungeon masters or loremasters may find it useful to create a homebrew copy of the Nameless Thing stat block and adjust the stats to fit your rolls and game.
COINS
This source features a new coinage system. At this time, D&D Beyond cannot support new coinage systems. All new items on D&D Beyond from this source use the coin system described in the Free Rules with the following conversion rates:
