I am currently working on a home brew campaign that will be Fighters only that I am calling "Tides of Steel". My main inspiration for this campaign is a Rhapsody song titled "The Emerald Sword".
I wanted to reach out and hear from the community about what songs have inspired you for your adventures, characters, plot twists, etc.
I love making characters (both PCs and NPCs) based on songs, and making playlists for characters I create. I am currently playing a character based on Indestructible by Disturbed.
Hey Matthias, unfortunately its going to be a live home game, but I appreciate your interest! Maybe once I finish the prep for it all and start to actually run it (a few months away for sure), ill share my session intros and keep people posted about the story (if there is actual interest).
Instrumental Core: Strength of a Thousand Men. Absolutely beautiful song that emotes the imagery of a conflict on a massive scale. Instrumental with touches of dubstep for that extra base kick, the band is great by itself, but this song is a step beyond if you are looking for climactic music. Just wait for the choral accents; absolutely haunting.
Instrumental Core: Evolving. Yes, another Instrumental Core, but the transitions in the song give a great sense of build. Starts small with minimal instrumentals, then gradually adds more along with vocal accents. Almost seemlessly, electronic instrumentals are added and gradually replace the orchestral feel to create a wonderfully powerful score.
Distrubed: Inside the Fire. Outstanding metal song with poweful instrumental backdrop to almost haunting vocals. The band has always placed heavy emphasis on the importance of their lyrics and this one does not dissapoint as it comes from real experience of loss and grief. Excellent inspiration if you are setting up a plot twist leading to a rescue.
Lindsay Stirling: Master of Tides and Forgotten Voyage. Love the artist's combination of violin and electronic sound. The songs always brings to mind the image of ocean campaigns led by a charismatic ship captain or a lone-wolf hero that runs by wit and intuition over calculated strategy.
Grishkar Darkmoor, Necromancer of Nerull the Despiser Kelvin Rabbitfoot, Diviner, con artist, always hunting for a good sale Bründir Halfshield, Valor Bard, three-time Sheercleft Drinking Competition Champion, Hometown hero
We need a D&D Beyond Music Playlist on YouTube. One that has all our favorite battle songs and the like. I know every Friday (my home game) I just usually put on the Sharn soundtrack or put on the Epic Battle Music playlists (Skyrim ones are the easiest...lol), but I would love to have something consistent instead of searching for the same things that I always look for.

"...Debts must always be paid, sometimes in more than blood and gold. But this is Ordo Ursa," Ren places his hand on Erakas's chest, right where the Dragonborn's heart is. "Right here. And it always has been and always will be. Don't ever forget that. Because I won't."

Not sure about songs inspiring adventures, but there are a few that might set the mood at the table.... ...but If I tried to force my favourite mood songs on the others at the table, there'd probably be a lynching!
Bender (Futurama) would probably suggest "The Necromancer" and "By-Tor and the Snow Dog." One day I might risk the narrative parts..2112 is roleplay gold!
Most Yes stuff is full of instrumentals that go swirling off into the Fey....excellent for keeping the creative juices lubricated - And who here over the age of 40 hasn't had a wizard or bard character based on Rick Wakeman? (Although for bard, David Lee Roth is the ultimate showman.)
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden is based on a book(probably) and is just crying out for a D&D campaign... Anything by Ronnie James Dio. (Is Holy Diver the cheesiest and most-unrelated-to-the-song video ever made?) (Dio - another chap who is an excellent person to base a character on, as is Ozzy.) Recently introduced to Ghost - I don't know why, but they just make me think of caverns and drow...
My son watches a lot of manga-esque stuff on the old YoreTube, and the music on there is a perfect background for sword fights. It's mostly a bit heavy and frantic for me*, but he likes it.
I find the OST from Akira to have quite a few tracks that can be used for tense-and-creepy situations.
I also usually use quite a lot of metal as "boss soundtrack", stuff from Slipknot, Darkest Hour, Dark Tranquillity and other similar bands can be very fitting if put at the right volume after the initial blast.
Raphsody just scream D&D all over the place, and my teenager self reminds me the first two albums were extremely enjoyable. As Plundered says Dio is an excellent choice (and yes, Holy Diver's video IS the cheesiest and awesomest most-unrelated-to-the-song video ever made). Iced Earth also have quite a few good tracks.
Then we have the bards of metal themselves, Blind Guardian, which have a number of very good atmospheric songs that can be used.

Nice!!! I usually use the intro song for my previous session synopsis. I queue it up to "Let me Tell you the days of High Adventure". I blatantly stole this from my good friend @DiscerningDM
A video game theme that always stayed hidden in the back of my mind was the theme for Fat Princess, I kid you not. Give it an ear should you dare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynW82YLLSSw . This theme gave me an idea for one of my favorite PCs and a great NPC for my campaigns. Smooth Bilko the Illusion Bard, College of Glamour gave him a spark of life I'd been looking for. This theme to me has the right bit of fun and awe of an entertainer with just a hint of his Fey deviousness to it.

Be excellent to each other and Happy Gaming!
Viking metal maybe? TYR is really powerful stuff to get the blood pumping for an epic fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu2bgwcv43o.
Also if your group hasn't played it to death, there's always Dragonforce.

I listen to video game music when I write stuff or come up with backstories. For example, I listened to this when I wrote my Tiefling Cleric.

Thanks for engaging!

Call me oldskool and boring, but I enjoy Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack while brainstorming for ideas about D&D.
I based an adventure off "The Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson awhile back. It's just full of strange characters and imagery.
