It's neat that you can do it, but I'm not sure what purpose it actually serves?
On the whole, I really like the builder. It'll definitely save some time and make finding a variety of creatures a bit easier. The only thing I think it's lacking (that isn't mentioned in the pinned post) is a little tutorial/guide. Some of the features it has, I didn't even realise were there till I went through the survey (such as this grouping feature).
The initiative would make sense (and be awesome), I don't like all my mobs going at the same time, but being able to group together some would be very useful.

When building an encounter that is a multi-room dungeon/house/location with 30+ rooms it is easier for me to call the encounter (GOS Chapter 2: The Haunted House) and place my monsters in the corresponding rooms grouped together.
Example, when the players hit Room 27. Storage Cavern I place (1) bandit, (1) hobgoblin, and (1) scout [Grouped together] and title it 27. Storage Cavern.
When they hit room 29 is another (1) hobgoblin and (1) bandit.
They hit room 30 its (2) hobgoblins. All under the one encounter but the grouping is so you can stay on one page and run a whole 30 room dungeon without having to hunt down stats.
Now if they added a place to put traps that would be the bee’s knees.
I hope that answered your question on the purpose of grouping, at least for me that’s how I see it.

My guess is:
- different waves
- units (like a goblin boss and 3 normal goblins)
- maybe something else :)
I'm guessing that it will be a factor when rolling initiative comes in to play.

Even for after rolling initiative, grouping things with the same initiative.
After joining more my signature got out of hand so I am now a proud member of the extended signature club!! :)
I actually found this useful for creating units of mounting creatures - as BBogus73 pointed out.
It looks like grouping is just a general tool - and it has several uses :)

I didn't think of using it for initiative, but I plan on using it for waves and just general organzing
