My players seem to be really in to this kind of thing so I recently started one. They decided to look for evidence of other humans in the world. Because they started on an island they could pretty much end up anywhere you could imagine, so if you do suggest something don't worry about what happened before. This would be a great help to me if you could give me some ideas, thanks!
In my post-apocalyptic homebrew setting, demons invaded the world 100 years before the start of the campaign. They warped a good deal of the world, but all the gods banded together and managed to push all of them back into the Abyss and shut them there forever. However, this caused the gods to fade and disappear. 4 powerful wizards took control of the remaining human and halfling provinces, then you united them into one. Most of species (besides half-elves) live in secluded communities in the wilderness. The Four Sorcerer-kings use the people's fear of demons to keep themselves in power and destroy all who oppose them, while trying to become gods themselves. The world is still twisted by the demon incursion, some ways more obviously than others. For example, the sun is blood red instead of yellow, and about half of the world is either a hellish jungle or desolate and barren plains full of steaming pits full of acid and sludge. The world is affected in less prominent ways too, like no clerics, no Lolth, and everyone trying to kill tieflings (except learned people) and warlocks of the fiend (actually everyone) on sight.
Technically speaking, the Forgotten Realms is a “Post Apocalyptic” setting.
True. But was it the Spell Plague or the Second Sundering?
You got me. I don’t use FR, I use Mystara, which is also technically “Post Apocalyptic” a couple times over. And like iconarising pointed out, so is Eberron. It’s kindofa theme for a lot of high fantasy settings I think.

One of the more common motifs in fantasy is to have the current world layered on top of a much older civilization that only remains in ruins. In Lord of the Rings, you have the ruins of the 1st and 2nd Ages. In Sword of Shannara, it is implied that there was the equivalent of a nuclear holocaust at some time int he past (at least in the first couple of books -- I never read past those). In the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the apocalyptic event was the Ritual of Desecration, uttered by High Lord Kevin Landwaster, which laid The Land waste for a thousand+ years and erased all magic learning. In the Wheel of Time, Lews Therin went crazy and "broke the world."
These cataclysms set up the world as very old, and provide a basis to find "old treasures" from the past, great mega-weapons that current people have lost the technology to create.
So yeah... it's common to nearly all fantasy. Very few fantasy stories take place in a time when there has not been a previous "great civilization" that has collapsed.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
And don’t forget the entire multiverse attached to the Dark Tower.
Shannara even has rusted out cars in the fields and collapsed suspension bridges.
(But, was to world of the Covenant series actually real? Or was it not? I don’t believe we ever did get an answer to that)
Yeah, any world that has ancient ruins full of forgotten high Magics, the secrets of their construction having been lost to the ages must by default be “post apocalyptic” to some extent.

The third series highly implies that it was real, since it starts out with Covenant long-dead, and Linden as the main character. It also has multiple characters besides Linden entering the Land from "our" world.

Wow... it's not very often that someone would take all of the references I would have made and put them in one paragraph. Well done! May your gray hairs hold tight and shine bright!

BioWiz is great for that. That’s why I didn’t bother, I knew they would probably do it both better, and more concisely.
As someone for whom the first 2 Chronicles of Thomas Covenant were his favorite series of all time, it pains me to say... you haven't missed anything. The 3rd series is 4 books that probably should have been 3. It started out so great -- books 1 and 2 were awesome. But it's like he set up way too much and then he wasted all of book 3 on almost nothing happening and introducing a whole new villain on top of the 5 or 6 who were already running around, and then the 4th book was rushed as he tried to tie up all the loose ends and didn't have enough room to do it. Highly unusual for Donaldson (in the first 2 series, at least) and very disappointing. If I ever go back to re-read Covenant, I'll re-read books 1-6 and ignore the 3rd series. Which is a shame.

I am definitely not your guy if you want concise writing. I tend to be wordy. Ironic, really, since I teach science writing in college and I am forever telling my students to be more concise.

The new Eberron book has a post apocalyptic wasteland and some story hooks for it if you want a reference
