one of my pcs wants to create a sentient goodberry bush I don’t have a problem with this but I have an idea as I’m known at my table for monkeypawing things I want to make this bush escape into waterdeep and just heal everyone it can but plants need food so eventually it’s going to find a dead or dying npc and think hey food and start growing into the npc and eventually I want this to spiral into a cult like scenario where npcs sacrifice themselves to the goodberry “for the good of all” except with the warped magic of the plant they can’t die on their own they are just constantly being drained and used as fuel to make more goodberrys the plant will eventually be found in an overgrown courtyard under all the roots and vines are all the cultist/zombies now connected by the roots of this plant just thought I’d share and posibly get some feedback so any recommendations are welcome
Sounds intersting. Assuming they don;t have acces to a wish spell to merely wish it into exsistence, I'd probably do somethign along the following lines:
Step 1) The PC needs to use the Awaken spell on a mistletoe bush. Mistletoe is thematerial component for the spell and casting awaken on it grants the bush the Awakened Shrub stat block.
Step 2) The Shrub needs to be taken to a Druid Grove have be ritually imbued with magic. This could include watering it with pure water from a mountain spring, annoiting it with various special herbal oils which the PC needs to make (requiring successful survival check to locate the herbs and nature or alchemist or brewers supplies or cook utensils tool checks to distill/brew the oils), daily casting of Goodberry, some sundry Nature or Arcana checks and maybe some meditation with the awakened shrub whilst performing the 8 hour version of Plant Growth.
Step 3) the actuall number of ability checks and spells being cast is somewhat irrelevent, as a DM choose a number, say for example 250. The total number of rolls a for ability checks and spell levels expended need to meet or exceed that number. You just keep a little tally going of the number and spinkle in some narration and colourful flavour for the progress being made and leave it to the player come up with other interesting or inventive ways to get the shrub to produce its own goodberries. Once that magic number has been achieved the shrub produces its own level 1 goodberry spell once per long rest.
Step 4) When it goes rogue and wanders off and the "cult" forms around it you could have it turn them into Myconids instead of zombies as nice little twist. Maybe the shrub starts to not only produce Goodberries but also berries that mimic the Guidance cantrip and people become addicted to them as they believe the shrub is guiding them to a better life, they gradually develope a rash, that turns into a mold that sprouts into fungus and eventually converts them to a Myconid. It also develops defences with "pods" that burst as per the Posion Spray cantrip or vines that whip out as a Thorn Whip cantrip.
