Reading the bit about Shadowfell in the DMG the shadow crossings seem to be gates on the prime material plane side of things. How would a part trapped in Shadowfell get back out? Same sort of gate or would it look different? How easy would a gate be to find?
There are places where the veil between the worlds is thinner. Maybe there's a dark forest that, if you wander around long enough, you may stumble out of the Shadowfell. Maybe there's an old well that, if you do some chinsy ritual during a blood moon, will cause the area around it to shift from the Shadowfell to the normal world again. Maybe you need to find a Shadar-kai guide to lead you out similarly to how the Vistani can come and go from Ravenloft as they please.
There are lots of ways to get out of places.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
One of the things about Shadowfell is that it is, last I knew, the sister to the Feywyld. With that being said the veil between both planes and the prime material are very often juxtaposed, this leads to finding ways back and forth a bit easier than some of the other planes. As Metamongose pointed out, there are peoples that can travel freely about between Shadowfell and the prime material, easiest would be the denizens of Underdark such as the Drow or Duregar. The Vistanni are a bit of a different lot, they technically belong to a pocket dimension anchored inside Shadowfell, but that's some very old lore if you want to start digging.
Maybe you could have them follow a gloomwing moth into a cave and end up back in the material plane, but somewhere they have not been before, and they have to get back to where they were before.
Have them search for the Hooded Lantern, a rumored artifact that when lit opens up a tare in the veil from the Shadowfell to the Prime Material. In reality its a group of Pelor Worshippers who want to bring light to Shadowfell. Maybe they have a way of helping the group out of the Shadowfell to the Prime Material plane.
The 4E supplement The Shadowfell - Gloomwrought and Beyond would be a good resource for Shadowfell. They go into very good detail for you to run a campaign there. And compared to what WotC has been able to recently put out, its superior.
Natural portals leading to things like shadow dragon lairs, locations of great tragedy or the under dark
Traveling via one of the domains of dread. Particularly the travelling ones like the carnival or the mourning rail
Having a powerful magical entity open a passage. This could be doing a favour for some one in the shadow fell or maybe communicating with a mad wizard on the material through nightmares

There are allot of options.
