Question: If a live creature is put into a bag of holding would they be able to escape, on their own, if they were unbound, and before they suffocated?
However, the only means that I am off-handedly confident that would allow a creature to vacate the bag's extradimensional space is to be able to travel to other dimensions in some way (such as phasing, or plane shiftiing)
For whatever it's worth to you, rules designer Jeremy Crawford has ruled that a bag of holding can be opened from the inside. That said, the item doesn't explicitly address that possibility so there's room for a DM to rule otherwise.
As AaronOfBarbaria mentioned, the bag doesn't interfere with spellcasting so any spell that allows planar travel would allow them to escape.
if the item doesn't say you can't open it from the inside, then you can... open it from the inside that is
a bag of holding has 10 minutes of air... Rope Trick lasts an hour... but what happens if you cast rope trick inside a bag of holding?

I think bags of holding don't like having other pocket dimensions inserted into them. They tend to explode and break a rift in space time. But please, do give it a try...
Thank you, everyone, for your answers. I should have been clearer in my question: can a live creature leave the bag through the opening?
I think the answer is yes but that means the bag isn't secured shut, and it's before the creature suffocates.
I also think if the creature can travel to other planes, then they'll also be able to escape, provided their conscious and haven't suffocated.
However, now that I think on it, and at the risk of derailing this question, how does one retrieve items from the bag if the insides area an extra-dimensional?

I think the answer to that is "it's magic". I imagine that any time you open the bag from the outside, either the opening or the bag's contents shift in the pocket dimension to allow you to reach what you are trying to get. The short answer is that the bag carries stuff, and you can get the stuff. It's an ok place to hide a person for a few minutes, but it's not a good trap to contain an enemy. Trying to layer other dimensional effects on top of that or in combination can cause catastrophic failure. Even with those limitations it is an incredibly useful and powerful tool.

That's actually a specific interaction of a portable hole and bag of holding that has been made into a general assumption among the gamer populace from stories shared and re-shared but hasn't had back-up by the D&D rules.

Yup. That restriction is there to prevent you from easily bypassing the space and weight limits. A single bag of holding could hold dozens of other bags.

I thought I'd point out that if the bag is opened after they suffocate they come back alive because suffocating in the astral plane just turns you to stone and doesn't kill you per say. As soon you get oxygen and are still in one piece you reanimate. Think of it like the anime Dr. Stone. The mind is alive and once conditions are met. Its break out of its stone encasement and is alive again, in this case oxygen. In Dr. Stone's case. Bat pee XD

Thanks, in advance, for your answer.

Potentially, yes.

The Bag is only 4 feet deep, so most of the races dont have to worry about this problem, as they can just climb out. (dmg p153)

Even if the bag was locked from the outside, it would be pretty easy to escape from - as long as you don't mind escaping to the astral plane.
