So I wanted to create a magical item for low level PC's (that may be as low as level 1 depending on when they decide to take up the quest that will get them this item), but I don't want to make it particularly powerful (for obvious reasons). So here's my thoughts on the item I want to create:
It will be an item (A Longsword, Bow, Spell Scroll for a Cantrip like Poison Spray, or something like that).
Once per long period of time (1 / day, 1/ week, or something like that), the item will allow the player to either:
Have advantage with attack rolls against a specific type of enemy (e.g. Bandits, a particular type of Demon, etc);
Have advantage with attack rolls against a specific target (e.g. a powerful enemy like a boss creature);
Do extra damage against a specific type of enemy (e.g. Bandits, a particular type of Demon, etc); or
Do extra damage against a specific target (e.g. a powerful enemy like a boss creature);
The effect would also reset to nothing (its default) 24 after setting the target, meaning the player will have to set it again.
What are your thoughts on this? Should I avoid this idea all together for low levels? Or is this workable?
I suggest you pick up Xanathar's Guide to Everything. They have a lot of common items, which are 1st - 4th level magical items. What you're suggesting is similar to clockwork amulet.
