Im trying to homebrew some plate armor for one of the players in my campaign. basically I wanna give them plate armor that has the ability to cast black tentacles 3 times per long rest. The only problem is no matter what I try the armor keeps getting charges that don't recover, and they space out to 4th 5th and 6th level, even though I have it set just for 4th level, and I've tried not specifying a level. Please help lol
As to your first issue, charges do not automatically recover. The players have to click the boxes a second time to “uncheck” them. (Technically, charges never refresh on any rests, only “Dawn” or “Other” but there’s no “Dawn” button.)
For the second issue:
Make sure the Min - Max charges are both set to “1.” That tells the system that they are only allowed to spend 1 charge per casting. If that is set as “1 - 3,” then that tells the system they can spend more charges to upcast the spell.
Ok that seems like it should fix my second issue, but as for the first one, it doesn't give me check boxes, it just gives me a cast option and then no way to recharge it

The players will have to uncheck those boxes manually whenever you tell them Dawn has come. I’m assuming you have played before and used some official, “off the rack” magic items before; yes? It’s the same way all of the official magic items work too. It works exactly like a Wand of Magic Missiles or something like that works.
So I have essentially made a similar item, but it will cast fly (Min and Max charges are set to 1) once per charge with three charges resetting on a Long Rest.
