So i pretty much know nothing about D&D, ive been playing with my friends for the past few weeks and wanted to try my hand at GMing once the game we're playing is done, problem is i dont know what i actually can do in terms of monster creation, so i was hoping to find some help here.
The basic idea for what i wanted was a mimic parasite monster, where if someone tries to open a chest its hidng in without passing a perception check, it would launch out at them and they would need to make a dex saving throw at dissadvantage to avoid getting grabbed. if they failed, it would imbed itself onto them.
I really want it to be less traditional in the sense that it doesnt really do damage to a player, but instead forced them to make strength saving throws to resist it controlling their body for each of its turns, and it would have an AC of 13 or something, and force players to attack at dissadvantage because of how much control it has over the person its attacking, like for example, if someone tries to hit it off of the person its latched onto, if they fail the attack, the parasite would throw the person its attached to to intercept the attack, depending on how bad the roll was, but if they did manage to hit the parasite, it would have really low HP considering its exposed.
Is that i thing i would even be able to do? to have a monster that doesnt really do damage, but instead is really built around making opponets do saving throws and putting people at dissadvantage?
I always suggest for new DM, find an official monster before homebrewing. There is over 41 pages of official monster listings on D&D Beyond and many of them have grapple attacks and have the long spindly tentacles to move a creature around. However, you need to be specific in what you're looking for. Are you looking for a low-level boss or a surprising and goofy monster?

For a new DM creating an actual monster and all its stats and challenge rating and everything is a bit of a trial. Might I suggest an alternative? Could you design this thing as a sort of trap? Perception check to spot it wherever it is hidden, Nature or Animal Handling check to remove it safely, if you set it off it leaps at you and tries to sink into the skin, Dex or Con save to avoid that, if you save it leaps at the next nearest person and repeats until it's tried d6 times or no one else is within 10ft, then while under its effects you take some damage and suffer the poisoned condition, it can be removed by anything that cures poison or curses or by a difficult Medicine check during a short rest, every day (long rest) it goes untreated adds a level of exhaustion until death. You can then describe the trap as a creature and colour the experience however you like, but actual combat stats are not required.

Reminds me of this.
