I know this is a bad time to post this (due to the new OGL) but I have created a new kind of pet for you to put in your worlds.
You would find special adoption facilities scattered throughout the world! (what the adoption centers look like is up to the DM) what they Would sell? ✨Domesticated Mimics✨ These Mimics are small, cute, portable, useful pet versions of the standard Mimic. (cost of adoption is up to the DM) these mimics would be able to be trained to transform into useful items and even appendages.
Description: Domesticated mimics are small, shapeshifting creatures that are often kept as exotic pets. They have the ability to take on the form of any object, but are often trained to take on the form of common household items. They are immune to psychic damage and can stick to surfaces, making them difficult to dislodge. They are not naturally aggressive and are often trained to perform tricks or to protect their owners. But their most valuable trait is their ability to act as a prosthetic to add an additional limb to a creature. The mimic can morph into the shape of an extra arm and allowing the creature to use it as if it were an extra limb, making it a great tool for those looking to increase their physical capabilities. Additionally, it can wield weapons and make attacks as a bonus action, making it a formidable addition to any combat situation
Well, to test the feasibility of such an endeavor, let's first take a moment to compare the mimic to that other most-often-domesticated animal, the canine.
Canines and people have enjoyed a cooperative-domestication relationship for millennia. Could a mimic fill a similar role? Canines are carnivorous predators, mimics are carnivorous predators. Canines have a basic animal intellect (Int 3, Wis 12), while mimics are a bit smarter (Int 5, Wis 13). The big difference is that canines are pack hunters whereas mimics are solitary hunters. But even the stat blocks says, "... though they occasionally share their feeding grounds with other creatures."
So if canines can be domesticated and trained as pets, and guardians, and assisted-living helpers, mimics should absolutely be able to fill that roll also. As long as they are well fed on a regular schedule. After all, there is nothing more dangerous than a hungry and unpredictable predator . . . just look at humans!
