I'm new to using this sight. I'm making a fighter subclass who I want to not have 4 attacks and would prefer to not start off with 3 lvl 1 spell slots. can i do that
You can forgo using all of your attacks in a turn and use spell scrolls instead. Assuming your DM allows you to do so. Or some various other magical item to cast a spell with.
You won’t get 4 Attacks until 20th level, and that won’t happen for a llooonng time. Even 3 attacks at 11th won’t happen for a loong time, probably a year or two IRL if you play every week. So I wouldn’t worry about that. As for the 3 spell slots, you won’t get that many until 4th level. At 3rd level you only get 2 of them. Besides, an Eldritch Knight’s best spells are stuff like shield and absorb elements, especially at early levels. So you’re likely going to rip through those spell slots pretty quickly. I wouldn’t try to reduce the number of spell slots preemptively. Of course, if you really don’t want to use all your attacks then simply don’t, you don’t have to use all your attacks. And if you don’t want to use all your spell slots then don’t, just limit yourself to fewer spell slots.
Out of curiosity, why do you want to reduce your effectiveness? I’m curious.
so im using DnD as a medium for me to make a setting for a game i want to develope in the future this way the PCs can do my work for me while i work on this kind of stuff. my goal is to make a multiclassing system that feels more meaningful by actually mixing the class abilities instead of just giving them abilities from both. im not sure how to link it, its called spellsword. its meant to be a mix of what is essentially an elemental mage and fighter. so, instead of a fighter who can cast spells i want to make a fighter who can augment their martial abilities with elemental magiv. so, ive made a system i think will work for now but if they could swing twice at 5th level they'll probably steam roll.
Have you looked into the School of Bladesinging Wizard from TCoE? It might be the specific concept you are after, and you can always scale its abilities up and down as needed in your HB game. Or even adapt some features from fighter.

As long as you don’t augment the damage too much it shouldn’t be a problem. What’s your system?
You wrote “so, ive made a system i think will work for now but if they could swing twice at 5th level they'll probably steam roll.” So what did you mean by “system?”
i meant how im having the class work. they have 3d6 at 3rd lvl that they can add to basic movements to add the element damage their subclass is associated with to the movement/action/spell of that element.
i guess what i think might break them is that they choose from perks kind of like warlocks and that and some strong-ish spells i was thinking two attacks might be a bit much
Wait. Do they get to add a D6 to the attack if they spend it or something? Because if they only get 3 of them to spend, that’s not a ton, of uses even if they refresh on a short rest. So what are your perks? How do they modify the attacks or damage? What I’m trying to ascertain is what about it would make it so powerful that their base class features would need to be nerfed.
i guess its not that bad in retrospect i was just messing with it and i got one hit to go up to 1d10 + 1d8 + 3d6 which in retrospect isn't that much more than some spells. i appreciate the advice.

im DMing a homebrew and making a subclass for the fighter thats has other bonuses and having extra attacks i fear would make it overpowered.
What’s your homebrew? Maybe I can help.

i've never actually heard of that subclass before. i do want the subclass to be a fighter thing but i suppose i can just alter the rules
