So in a game I played a while back, my character was cripled by some Yaun-ti. I liked the idea of it, especially after I myself became a bit crippled in a very similar way.
I'm remaking this character now for a new game, keeping the cripple. I'm sacrificing 5 feet of movement and my character walks with a cane. My dm and I have decided that she'll have had it long enough that she'll be proficient with it if she needs to use it in combat. The question now is what kind of damage will it do? My dm says that it should only do 1d4 like a club. But I know that a cane with some kind of a metal head on it would break some bones, so I think it should do AT LEAST 1d6 like a mace or a quarterstaff. What do you guys think?
I'd say it's more like a quarterstaff that can't have the versatile property - or even just use a staff instead of a cane? This way you still have something to aid you walking, and you and the DM don't have to worry about opposing viewpoints.
Obviously, this is a late to answer but for future references (those who want to use a cane as a weapon). Its really up to the DMs discretion on the damage. You could tell the DM what you think and they might consider, though if they are set on using a certain type of damage thats that. NOTE: the discussion of the weapon is not only about the damage, it could also be the properties (Light, finesse, versatile...etc) it will still be the DMs decision
I'd say its more of a Club Type Weapon, unless it has some sort of hidden blade in which case it could be a small Ddagger or Shortsword, with the Wooden Sheath as a makeshift Club

Wary the wizard who focuses on homebrew, for he can create nightmares that you wouldn't even dream of
