So I created a homebrew magic item that is essentially a Staff of Power with a different spell selection. I'd like to share it with the community but I get the message that it resembles the original item too closely.
So how much do I need to change? Can anyone give me some advice of what keywords I need to chop out or change? I've got a couple of races, magic items and sub-classes that have this particular issue. I have changed a decent amount IMO but still get the message that I need to change more.
If you are finding yourself needing to 'chop out' text to make it different than WOTC content, then you likely need to create original homebrew. The indexing is loose as it is, preventing copy/paste homebrew from copyright content from taking place. Either keep these creations as 'Private', or create original homebrew to be submitted as 'Public'.
The problem with magic items like a staff is that the language is intended to be pretty specific. For example the below instructions are fairly specific to staves in general....
The staff has 20 charges for the following properties. The staff regains 2d8 + 4 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff retains its +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls but loses all other properties. On a 20, the staff regains 1d8 + 2 charges.
Do we need to reorganize the wording on charges just to share a staff? This is pretty standard language for staves in general. Really only the numbers very from published staff to staff.
A staff of power with a different spell list isnt an original creation. If you had a staff that had different abilities from the SoP (so the AC bonus, Power Strike, and Retributive Strike) then it would be qunique enough.
From a homebrew moderation perspective, we've always had the stance of changing a fireball from fire to cold damage is not enough of a change. Changing available spells in a staff is the same category.

What advice can anyone give?

I'm not sure how much you will actually need to change, but you will need to click the save button to make the system rerun the check.
Also, you do not need to publish homebrew in order for players in your campaigns to use it.
