Mail Breaker (Rare): a straight dagger with no bladed edge, but sharpened to a point. Ideal for piercing through armour, but difficult to use in hand to hand combat due to short length and no sharp edge.
1D6 piercing damage. Light, finesse? Martial weapon. When used on surprised target, the dagger gains a +2 to attack and damage for one turn. When used on target that is aware of the wielder the dagger has a -2 to attack.
I wanted it to have a decent enough benefit that it would be worth wielding for at least one round, my thoughts are a rogue would likely wield it in the off hand with a versatile weapon in the other, and after the initial use of it in the first round, would throw it to the ground and use the other weapon 2 handed? I figure that's the most applicable use for it. But I'm unsure whether it's enough to make it a valuable weapon or if it's just pointless?
Thoughts? Advice? Is there something out there like this? All thoughts are welcome!
Sorry, but to me it sounds completely over powered. This is just a simple +2 to both attack and damage on a rogues sneak attack with a short sword. After that, drop the weapon, pick up a new one and carry on. Am I missing something?
It would only really apply to the sneak attack of the first round of combat, not easy to get surprise off mid combat with melee weapon.
What about making it have a curse that forces the PC that attunes to it be unable to sheath or drop the mail Breaker once it has hit a target until there is no perceivable threat? Forcing the PC to wield 2 light weapons and take the -2 attack for the rest of combat?
Or what would you suggest would make it less overpowered?
The idea behind a mail breaker is to penetrate armor. Your weapon is a +2 ambush weapon. If It was a weapon in the equipment section, I'd probably skip it for a shortsword.
It has no real reason to get an in combat debuff. Stabbing someone hurts the second time, sane as the first. If you want an assassin's weapon, designed to deal extra damage to surprised targets, i suggest doing just that and looking at making a weapon that gives a bonus to sneak attack damage when striking a surprised enemy.
Yes you're right it is definitely, it's a pretty odd weapon idea, I definitely need to rework it, it was intended to be a magic item, but it definitely has to have enough benefit to be viable without being op..
Hmm, if it give bonus to sneak attack damage then it doesn't increase the hit chance of the weapon for that initial surprise attack. It also forces it to be a rogue weapon which I don't know if I love.. I really gotta think about this, it needs work for sure.
Thank you for the input i'll have to think some more about it!
