Zenodor is unable to see the Shadow Dragon, and has no idea where to aim his spells. So instead, he uses his Hither-Tither staff to create a portal at his current location, and a second one _behind_ the 30ft zone of Sickening Radiance. He then steps through the portal, and since it is too small for an ancient dragon, hopes that if the dragon is stupid enough to try to follow him it would have to first charge through the spell and suffer its effects.
After stepping through, he also steps to the side and behind it just in case the dragon has some clever ideas about shooting at him through the open portal

(I don't know why DDB did this, but the dice roll indeed seems to have changed. I'm sure when I originally posted, this was a fail, some single digit result - but I don't recall the value)
(ooc: that's ok DDB does that from time to time, it's a DC 19 save anyway.)

(just a reminder that I am still using the 5 min short rest/1 hour long rest optional rules from 2014... along with the optional feat rules and optional flanking rules... if there's an option you notice that you would like to try let me know)
I thought it was rather unique that a powerful light spell or two could decide the outcome of an encounter with an ancient shadow dragon by denying it the use of it's lair.
I am going to say that you each find a specific legendary item but because I've used this method before and who knows how many times you will get to custom fit items to your particular character I'm going to give you the option to select one each.
And last but not least you all know in your hearts you bested that Shadow Dragon and as a result you all level up to level 17
