Pepin, noticing the possible portal suggests to Z they should head in and see what kind of portal it is.
If Z agrees he hits his warhammer through the windows to move in.
Z agrees. Best to have a look quickly before the portal (and other evidence) disappears. But Z will leave the Hither-Tither portal open to allow the others to join them quickly. To make this even faster, he will relocate the closer of the portals from outside the tower to somewhere just inside
Leaving his Spiritual Weapon behind to continue to mop up the flying foes, Randall pilots the carpet over to the tower and portal, preparing to go through with the others should they choose to do so.
”Where are the mages? Have they left of their own accord or were they kidnapped?” he asks.
The inside of the wizard's tower is eerily silent.

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
Zenodor goes in and carefully investigates the interior for any clues as to what might have happened, it where the mages went. (What checks do you want us to roll?)
If you're just taking a quick look around... Perception.
Or if you want to examine something more closely, then tell me what and how exactly you go about it... with an Investigation check please.
The room doesn't look abandoned (like for any great length of time, months/years etc.) it's just currently empty or I should say unoccupied.

Looking around quickly, Randall tries to ascertain what happened to the mages. Perhaps they didn’t join the battle because they were abducted, or maybe they realized the battle was a diversion and used the portal to address the true threat…Maybe they left a note?

You don't notice anything out of place, it is very clean and orderly but you also don't find a note. Your best guess is the wizard left voluntarily.

He waits a beat for any reply, then follows Pepin into the portal.

It's been 24 to 48 hours so I'm going to proceed and if Zenodor doesn't wish to go through the portal he can post what other course of action he takes.
You all go through the portal and emerge from an ancient stone arch with mysterious arcane sigils and runes etched upon it in various locations. The landscape that greets you leaves no doubt that you are on another plane of existence as there is mostly shades of gray and different levels of darkness and shadow, any trees you see remind you of winter as they are leafless and just bare branches, and a chill wind is blowing but its currently not very strong, just enough to cause your hair to flutter and cloaks to billow from time to time. The sky overhead is pure black, not only is the moon missing but there are no stars in the night sky.
You currently see no buildings or structures of any kind and no people or animals in this desolate wasteland.

Tempe, you recall from hearing a wizard once say that a plane existed of pure dread where all hope was lost, it was called the Shadowfell!
But if that were the case you should be in a shadow version of Laurentiis and instead you are looking out over a wasteland.
