Arisa will carry one of the potions of greater healing, and then direct the archers to focus their fire, particularly trying to cover the invisible advance of her companions. If any creatures get within 120’ of her she will blast with firebolt. Otherwise she will just help the archers pick their targets..
Belkas holds onto his small statue as he chants and traces sigils in the air. Darkness starts to flow out of the tattoos on his body. He places his hand lightly on Zyllith's arm, and the darkness whirls around both of them and then fades away, leaving them invisible to sight.
A disembodied voice says, "Wish us luck." And then, "Ah damn. Sorry, Zyllith. I think that was your foot. Go ahead. It didn't occur to me before that we wouldn't be able to see each other either."
Zyllith took a moment to get accustomed to her unseeable form before she started moving, "Well this is bloody awkward. Ah so be it, try ta' stay alive out thar. We'll jus' have ta try ta find each other when we come back. Bye fer now, try no' ta' die." The agile tiefling quickly made her way over the wall, sliding down the other side she begins moving quietly, taking advantage of her invisible form to remain unnoticed. As she moved she began searching for a suitable target, another giant away from the shower of arrows, as well as a good path to it.
After tying two of your ropes together to allow you to reach the entire way down the 60-foot tall outer wall, Zyllith and Belkas climb over the edge and lower themselves down to the ground. Both invisible, they both begin moving towards the four giants, who are spread out in a line about 150 feet back from the main gate.
As they stand there, hurling rocks at the wall and gate, with some of them flying all the way over the wall, the archers up on the wall begin to loose their arrows at the giants. Few of them hit their targets, but a handful of them land true, and all four giants sustain at least some level of injury. They respond by aiming their boulders at the top of the wall, to try and hit the archers, and a couple of them manage to send huge rocks right into the ranks, killing at least a couple of the bow wielding guards.
Meanwhile, the ogres release a full round of 6 spike-wearing goblins that fly high through the the air. One slams into the front of the wall about 50 to the right of where Zyllith and Belkas just lowered themselves, and where the rest of you are currently standing. One goblin hits the front gate, and three fly over the wall. Of those three, two land harmlessly, at least with respect to the people of Goldenfields, crashing to the ground, while one goblin missile hits and kills a town guard, and one slams into a horse, killing it instantly in a terrible impact.
In this time, both Zyllith and Belkas can make their advance to whatever distance they want and can now state their actions.
--- Zyllith is moving across to one of the giant catapults, opposite from where the archers are aiming to avoid getting hit. She will try to approach it hidden and try to see if she can find any latch or strap or anything she can cut or break easily which will break the catapult mechanism to prevent them from launching anything else at the wall. Barring that she will target the giant itself, at least target a tendon so it can't fire easily.
The ogres and the group of goblin ammunition are another 150 feet or so behind the four hill giants. They're also far enough back that they are out of accurate firing range for the archers, who are directing their arrows at the giants.
Making a wide arc so as to avoid any stray arrows, Zyllith circles around to the area where the six ogres are, and you get a better look at their goblin-hucker catapults. It's a continuous motion, with them loading a goblin, positioning its body to aim for the shot, launching the payload, re-arming the catapult with a chain and winch, then getting ready to load another goblin and repeat the process. It's a pretty chaotic undertaking, even with the system they have down. You notice that each ogre has an armored, helmeted goblin riding on its back, acting as kind of crew chief and "aiming" captain.
Looking closely at the mechanical contraption itself, you see that they're fastened to each ogre with a series of straps: two shoulder straps and a huge waist belt. In your judgement, cutting one of the shoulder straps might be enough to compromise the balance of the machine and effectively disable the device, since it's so heavy and unwieldy on the ogres' backs. However, with the constant movement of battle, it would no doubt take a quick and careful hand to cut one of the straps.
Crowley also sees all this as he's flying around the area near where Zyllith is.
((If you want to try and cut one of the straps, I'll need a slight of hand check.))
“Focus your fire on the left most giant!” Says arisa. “Injuring them all evenly won’t help as much as if we can take one down. “
she’s getting rather desperate, the situation looks bleak and there doesn’t seem to be much she can do, with the giants out of range. She offers to light the most effective archer’s arrows on fire with her firebolts.
Arisa has a thought.. the awakened tree- perhaps she could enlist it to help carry her into battle, give her some cover but allow her to get close enough to the giants to attack…. She looks around for their friend.
Belkas goes down the rope, hands his knife to Crowley, and walks nervously away from the town walls, feeling very exposed. He moves to a spot 120 feet off to the side from the giants, maintaining concentration on the invisibility spell. He looks for some kind of cover to hide behind.
Crowley will accompany Zyllith and also try to invisibly cut the straps on the goblin lobbing harnesses.
Both Zyllith and Crowley try to cut one of the straps in two different ogre harnesses, but are both unsuccessful in their attempts. It’s a very awkward maneuver, with the ogres constantly moving around with abrupt motions.
Meanwhile, Belkas moves off to the left side, finding a good vantage point 120 feet away from the closest giant behind a small hay stack of hay bales.
Arisa approaches Lifferlas, and proposes her idea. The awakened tree is quite amenable to the notion, and when Zi Liang and Miros agree to keep an eye on Lob, the tree lets Arisa climb aboard and find a good perch high in his branches. He then moves over towards the front gate, where you will have to convince someone to open it up temporarily so you can get outside the walls. You see someone who looks like he’s in charge of the gate.
The archers continue to pepper the giants with arrows, although they don't seem to be heeding Arisa's words to focus on a single giant. When She and Lifferlas reach the gate and ask to be let out, the guard argues for a few seconds that opening the gate would put everyone at risk, but he quickly capitulates, obviously desperate for anything that might help. He's aware that the awakened trees provide vital and formidable defensive support to the city, so he shouts a command to his men, who quickly open the inner door, undo the barricade to the outer door and open it just far enough and long enough to let you out. As soon as you're past the threshold, they quickly close it behind you.
Meanwhile, the giants continue to hurl rocks at the walls, which smash with thunderous cracks. They manage to kill a few archers in the process, while a full round of six goblin missiles fly high trough the sky above. Two of the goblins slam into the outer wall, their small armored bodies smashed with dull, deadly clunks before there broken, smashed bodies fall to the ground. The other four goblin missiles fly over the wall, but thankfully, don't come close to hitting anyone, although the sheer terror of the whole ordeal continues to cause great mayhem and chaotic panic with the guards and villagers.
Once you're out, Lifferlas responds, "I cannnnnnnooootttt throw rocksssss, Arexxxxsiiiia... Ohhhh.. I think I've forgotten your name... If we get close, I can slam them with my boughs."
The tree begin walking towards the hill giant on the left, and from above and behind you, you can hear the voices of Zi Liang and Naxene up on the wall screaming to the archers to watch their aims as you move towards the battlefield.
“it’s Arisa, and that’s OK. As we approach I will shoot them with fire, and I will try to stay out of reach of them while you attack!. Mystra be with us…”
as soon as she’s in range of the giants, she will start firebolts- focusing on the most injured if any appear hurt…
she will attack from cover in the tree if possible, hopefully getting a bonus to ac.
Frustrated by their circumstances, Zyllith can only grumble silently to herself at her failure to cut the straps on the catapulting giant. But it seemed she and Belkas remained hidden from sight still as the ogres, goblins, and giants were still preoccupied with attacking the wall. Refocusing her attention, she once again attempted to slice at the harness strap in the hopes of disabling this catapult.
Far behind the lines, Zyllith realizes just how difficult this task is. The straps are tight against the ogres' bodies, and with them in constant movement, it's very hard to get close enough without being knocked over by the rather large, and clumsy monsters, let alone get the blade in the right position to cut through the thick leather band without accidentally cutting into their flesh.
On her second attempt, Zyllith manages to get close enough and remain in position, but when she reaches up and tries to get her knife in position, the ogre moves and totally throws off her angle of attack.
Meanwhile, from her perch high up in Lifferlas's canopy, Arisa launches a fire bolt attack on the left giant as soon as she's in position. Unfortunately, the bolt goes wide, but it seems as if the giant wasn't aware that he was being targeted by you... he likely notices the tree, but he seems more focused on the archers who are shooting painful arrows at it.
From his own position, crouched down by the haystack, Belkas watches Arisa and Lifferlas approach as he considers his own actions.
Belkas watches in amazement as Arisa rides the animated tree into battle. It seems the plan is no longer to try to be subtle. 'Crowley, now would be an excellent time for you to cut those harnesses before flying spiked goblin-balls pulverize Arisa and our long-limbed friend.'
Peeking over the top of the haystack at the giants and ogres, he mutters to himself, "This is a bad idea. This is a really bad idea." Ensuring that he maintains sufficient concentration for Zyllith's invisibility, he casts two Eldritch Blast at the most damaged giant and then drops down out of sight, hoping no one sees him.
--- Eldritch Blast: 1st: To hit 20, damage 5 2nd: To hit 8 (natural 1), damage 5 Imp: Slight of hand: 13 (10+3)
Belkas shoots his first Eldritch Blast at the giant that's closest to both him and Arisa. The energy bolt slams into the giant's shoulder, but it's obvious that the damage is minimal to the huge creature. He second bolt goes wide, flying right by Arisa's head. She can feel the displaced air brushing her hair aside as the arcane blast nearly hits her own head.
Behind the lines, Crowley experiences the same kind of difficulty in trying to cut the straps on one of the ogres. Even for the imp who can fly, it's a very challenging task and on this try, he's unsuccessful in his attempt.
Everyone can go again. And what are Vernon and Osmord doing right now?
